Weekend Movie News 9-5-14 to 9-7-14

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

The fifth big screen Terminator film, Terminator Genisys, is already set to hit the big screen on July 1, 2015. Now, Paramount Pictures has lined up two additional sequels. One will arrive on May 19, 2017 and the other on June 29, 2018. The 2017 film (temporarily dubbed Terminator 2) will open one week before Warner Bros.' The LEGO Movie sequel, while the 2018 film (Terminator 3) will open two weeks after a still-unrevealed Pixar feature. Although nothing has been officially confirmed, it appears very likely that the next two films will shoot back to back.

Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee and Matt Smith, Terminator Genisys is directed by Thor: The Dark World's Alan Taylor from a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance Productions are producing. Skydance's Paul Schwake, Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison, Kalogridis and Lussier are executive producing.

This is pretty surprising news to hear. It's surprising simply because the first film is a little under a year away from being released and the studio is already green-lighting sequels. Maybe the studio is impressed with Alan Taylor's film and they want to get ahead of the curve. hopefully the movie is as good as the studio thinks it is.

Highland Film Group announced today that Academy-nominated, BAFTA Award-winning actor Steve Coogan (Philomena, The Trip) has signed on to play the title role of James Boswell in a feature film adaptation of acclaimed West End play, Boswell for the Defence.

Boswell for the Defence, which will begin production in 2015, tells the true story of how James Boswell (Coogan), in the twilight of his career and life, takes on an impossible case - to save the life of the convict Mary Bryant from the gallows. A case no one else wants or cares about. The tragi-comic Boswell is the most unlikely hero from the most unlikely quarter. But he manages to find his past brilliance long enough to save the day.

Gregor Jordan (Buffalo Soldiers, Ned Kelly) will direct from a script by Patrick Edgeworth, who also wrote the play. Mark Pennell and Steve Chasman will produce. Armyan Bernstein (Beacon Pictures) will executive produce. The project is represented by Highland Film Group Internationally.

This is really great news to hear. Steve Coogan is one of the most underrated actors working today and this film right here could show everyone what they've been missing. The film fits perfectly with Coogan's style and hopefully he knocks it out of the park.

Although the Toronto International Film Festival only just kicked off a few hours ago, Deadline brings word that Hammer and eOne’s The Woman in Black 2 (formerly subtitled "Angels of Death") has just been acquired by Relativity Media for US distribution. The original Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, was released in 2012 by CBS Films, and it grossed over $127 million at the global box office. Directed by Tom Harper and written by Jon Croker, the second film stars Jeremy Irvine, Phoebe Fox and Helen McCrory. The Woman in Black 2 will continue the story four decades later. Seized by the government during World War II, the sudden arrival of a group of evacuated children at Eel Marsh House awakens its darkest inhabitant.

This is really cool to hear. I really enjoyed the first film and it was great to seen Daniel Radcliffe in something other than Harry Potter. Now I have heard rumors that his character will reappear briefly (Spoiler his character dies in the first film) and I think it'll be great to see him back in the film. Hopefully the next film is as good as the first one.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that V For Vendetta and Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue has signed on to direct Alien Sleeper Cell, a new film from Scanbox Studios and Prime Universe Films. Written by Morgan Davis Foehl, from an original concept by Felipe Linz, the film's plot is being kept under wraps, but it is described as an high tension alien invasion picture with the tone of The Bourne Identity and The Americans.

This is a really great hire. McTieigue has doen some pretty good films and V for Vendetta is one of favorite comic book films of all-time. The title of the movie sounds really interesting and it could be really awesome. I don't really know much about the film but it has peaked my interest a little bit with the hiring of McTieigue.

With the Middle-Earth grand-finale The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies on the way this December and Marvel Studios' "Phase Three" launcher Ant-Man hitting next July, respective franchise stars Orlando Bloom and Michael Douglas are teaming up with the previously-attached Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) for a new thriller, Unlocked. Alex Walton and Ken Kao of BLOOM today made the announcement alongside word that they will handle international sales on the film, which is set to be directed by Michael Apted (The World Is Not Enough, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader). Based on a screenplay by Peter O’Brien, Unlocked tells the story of a CIA interrogator (Rapace) who unwittingly provides information to terrorists and then must race against the clock to stop a biological warfare attack on London.

This is really great casting. Orlando Bloom is one of the best in the business and Michael Douglas is an Academy Award winning actor and adding them both to same cast automatically makes the movie a little better. The film also sounds really interesting so it may be a movie that I rush to the theater to see.
