So I recently watched Power Rangers (2017) and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...
Five ordinary teens must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove - and the world - is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it's too late, band together as the Power Rangers.
Even if you aren't a fan of the Power Rangers, you can still enjoy this film. As a whole series, Power Rangers is one of the cheesiest franchises you'll ever see due to a lot of different things, but it can still be entertaining. The way this film was able to balance out the cheesiness of the series and mix it with a nice serious tone was really shocking and the film became more grounded and relatable in some ways and to be able to make a Power Rangers film feel somewhat serious is a remarkable achievement. Story wise it is a very simple and basic plot and while it is basic, there are some unique ideas that borrows from various different points of some of the early seasons of Power Rangers and they all fit very well together. The performances in the film are really fantastic and all of the young actors in the film do a great job of capturing the magic from the original series while adding a few new elements and all of these kids will be stars in the near future. Both Bryan Cranston and Bill Hader are great as Zordon and Alpha 5 respectively, but Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa was just a little too over the top for the film that had been built, but there are some pretty good scary moments that showed the potential the character had. Visually it's a massive upgrade from the show and all of the suits and Zords looked amazing and like they should for a 2017 film. Not only does the film borrow from the tv series when it comes to the plot, but there is a major John Hughes feel to the entire film and it mimics The Breakfast Club in a lot of ways. There are some pretty emotional moments and one scene in particular gives you that Breakfast Club feel to it. Going back to the story there are some plotholes throughout the film that don't make much sense and there are some quite predictable moments as well. Overall this film brings back a lot of nostalgia from the 1990's and it's a film that everyone can see and understand and if you are a fan of Power Rangers and have kids then this if the perfect way to help pass the torch. I give Power Rangers (2017) a 7.5 out of 10.
