4-11-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Straight from the MTV Movie Awards, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne have officially revealed the new Suicide Squad trailer featuring all-new footage from the next DC Comics film. You can check it out in the player below! Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness, Focus) as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Easy Money) as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney (Divergent, The Water Diviner) as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina, Pan) as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El DIablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jared Leto as The Joker. There’s also mystery roles for Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack, and Common. Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the Suicide Squad team has included countless DC villains among its ranks, including Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Bane, Killer Frost, Poison Ivy, Count Vertigo, Deathstroke, and Harley Quinn. The CW’s “Arrow” introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team. Directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.

This was a pretty great trailer. It showed a lot of new fottage that really helped explain what the film is going to be about and it is basically what had been rumored for a long time. I loved the new shots we got of The Joker and we also got a new shot of Ben Affleck's Batman and I think he'll be in the film more than a lot of people realize. There were a lot of great jokes in the film and I think this film is going to be absolutely hilarious and quite possibly the most insane film ever to be on the big screen.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released new Fantastic Beasts sneak peek at the MTV Movie Awards. You can check out the sneak peek in the player below! Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Jenn Murray, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Gemma Chan and newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster Harry Potter features; J.K. Rowling; Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one of the Harry Potter films; and Lionel Wigram, who served as an executive producer on the last four installments of the franchise. Rowling herself is supplying the screenplay. Warner Bros. Pictures has the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them set for a worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on November 18, 2016.

I really loved this trailer. It really feels separate from the Harry Potter universe in a few ways and it did a nice job of subtly hinting that it is apart of a much bigger universe. Eddie Redmayne looks fantastic (no pun intended) and this could be a great role for him. If I had to complain about one thing ti would be the fact that it is using the same theme music from the Harry Potter franchise and I get why, but they could've come up with something new and fresh.

Paramount Pictures has released the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 trailer and poster, which you can both view below! Subtitled “Out of the Shadows,” the David Green-directed sequel opens in theaters on June 3. Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael return to theaters this summer to battle bigger, badder villains, alongside April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and a newcomer: the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell). After supervillain Shredder escapes custody, he joins forces with mad scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and two dimwitted henchmen, Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (WWE Superstar Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly), to unleash a diabolical plan to take over the world. As the Turtles prepare to take on Shredder and his new crew, they find themselves facing an even greater evil with similar intentions: the notorious Krang. The original film, directed by Jonathan Liebesman, grossed more than $485 million at the worldwide box office. It also starred Danny Woodburn and Tony Shalhoub.

I honestly don't know what to think about this trailer. On one hand it looks really cheesy and flat out corny, but it does look like some fun and I actually laughed quite a bit. I enjoyed the first film for what it was worth, but this one looks like it could be worse. I love the new additions that we are finally getting to see on the big screen such as Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady and I think that's what might push e over the edge to actually look forward to the film.

Deadline brings word that Creed star Tessa Thompson is set to join Thor: Ragnarok as both a female hero in the film and Chris Hemsworth’s love interest. You might be thinking that Thor already has a love interest in the MCU in Natalie Portman’s Dr. Jane Foster, but THR takes it a step further and reveals Portman will not be returning for the film. Ironically, Thompson is set to star in the Alex Garland film Annihilation with Portman before starring in the Marvel film. Thompson is also a series regular on HBO’s upcoming Westworld with the Allfather himself, Anthony Hopkins. It’s unclear which hero Thompson will play in the film, but some potential characters include Valkyrie or perhaps the sometimes-good, sometimes-bad Amora the Enchantress. Thor: Ragnarok, aimed to close out the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Asgardian trilogy, will see the return of Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder with Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Jamie Alexander as Sif, and Anthony Hopkins as Odin. Cate Blanchett is set to play the film’s villain with Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/The Hulk also set to appear. The “Phase Three” entry recently brought aboard 2013 “Black List” screenwriter Stephany Folsom to work on the script previously written by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle. Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok is set to open in theaters on November 3, 2017 in 3D/2D theaters and IMAX.

I really love this casting. Tessa Thompason was so good in Creed and I think she is a great addition to the MCU. I am going to miss Natalie Portman however, but I think we all saw the writing on the wall when she was upset about Alan Taylor replacing Patty Jenkins as director on Thor: The Dark World and she didn't have any fun making that film. I have no earthly idea who Thompson will be playing, but it will be nice to see an interracial relationship on the big screen in such a big film and I can't wait to see how she does.

Universal Pictures has announced that Suicide Squad co-star Scott Eastwood has been added to the upcoming Fast 8 cast! The son of Clint Eastwood will be playing a protégé of Kurt Russell’s Mr. Nobody. F. Gary Gray is directing the April 14, 2017 release, which is planned to launch a new trilogy of films. Fast 8 will be followed by a ninth film to be released April 19, 2019 and a tenth film planned to hit theaters April 2, 2021. Fast and Furious 8, 9 and 10 aren’t the only films new that Universal has planned for the franchise, either. It was recently revealed that plans are underway for both Fast and Furious spinoffs and prequels. The cast is confirmed to include franchise regulars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black reprising their roles as street racers-turned-international criminals-turned-super-secret agents. Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson and Kurt Russell are expected to return as well. Charlize Theron is confirmed to play the villain, with Kristofer Hivju as one of her henchmen. Principal photography for Fast 8 is planned to take place in both New York and Atlanta, Georgia. Recent reports suggest that two other possible locations for the film could be the previously-unexplored Russia and Iceland. Besides his work in this summer’s Suicide Squad, Eastwood has supporting roles in Oliver Stone’s Snowden and Ben Affleck’s Live by Night.

This is pretty interesting casting. Scott Eastwood is a great actor and everything (besides The Longest Ride) he's been good in and I think he is a perfect fit for this franchise. I like how he is a protege for Kurt Ruseell's character and he could be revealed to be his son. I also think this is sorta the way to replace Paul Walker and Scott Eastwood could become a staple in this franchise for the next two films after this. I think he's perfect for the film and I can't wait to see how he fits in.
