With Zoolander No. 2 set to hit theaters this weekend, I thought it would be fitting to review its predecessor Zoolander. So without further ado...
Propelled to the top of the fashion world by a photogenic gaze he calls "Blue Steel," dimwitted male model Derek Zoolander (played by Ben Stiller) thinks he's got a fourth consecutive win as Male Model of the Year in the bag. But, when his rival, Hansel (played by Owen Wilson), unexpectedly takes the crown, Derek is crushed. He becomes easy prey for fashion designer Jacobim Mugatu (played by Will Ferrell), who signs Derek to star in his "Derelicte" fashion show, then brainwashes him to kill Malaysia's prime minister.
This movie is so stupid that it's absolutely hilarious. This film has a certain type of comedy that you can only get if you don't think too hard about the jokes and just let them be. Ben Stiller both wrote and directed and he did a wonderful joke of basically making fun of the entire fashion world and doing so in a way that we can all relate to. Speaking of Stiller this is easily his greatest comedic performance and he hasn't even come close to topping what he did in this film. Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell have nice supporting roles and basically anytime they are screen you expect a few laughs. Other than that the film itself isn't that great as the story is just really dumb and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense and the fact they main plot is trying to save the prime minister of Malaysia is just sill and not saying the he/she isn't an important person, but it's not they are the President of the United States or The Queen. While the performances are pretty great, the characters themselves are just too silly and ridiculous that nothing they do impresses you because they are literally so stupid. Overall while the story and characters may be weak, the performances and the comedy make up for those shortcomings. I give Zoolander a 6 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Zoolander, what would you rate it, are you excited for Zoolander No. 2 and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
