2-9-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

The big screen return of the Universal Monsters continues to pick up speed today as Deadline reports that Johnny Depp has signed on to headline the studio’s remake of The Invisible Man. He’ll play Dr. Jack Griffin (or some variation thereof), a scientist who turns himself invisible, losing his sanity in the process. Claude Rains famously played The Invisible Man in Universal’s 1933 feature film, in turn based on the 1897 novel by H.G. Wells. Although Rains’ Griffin did not survive the first film, the series nevertheless became a franchise at the studio. The Invisible Man Returns followed in 1940 with The Invisible Woman arriving later that same year. After that came Invisible Agent in 1942 and The Invisible Man’s Revenge in 1944. Versions of The Invisible Man would also appear in the studio’s Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein in 1948. Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man in 1951. The new take on The Invisible Man has not, at the moment, named a writer or director, although both Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are attached to produce. The plan is for The Invisible Man to be part of a shared monster universe that will launch with Kurtzman’s The Mummy. Set to hit theaters June 9, 2017, The Mummy boasts a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) and stars Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella as the title monster. Fargo executive producer Noah Hawley is also said to be writing another one of the films in the series, with Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski penning a reboot of The Wolfman. A release date of March 30, 2018 has been earmarked for a Universal Monsters film, but whether or not it will be The Invisible Man remains, appropriately, to be seen.

This is really terrific casting. Now a lot of you all know that I have been very critical of Johnny Depp's career as of late mainly due to his choice of roles and him not changing his style and playing the same crazy characters all of the time. This role isn't a crazy character and that's why I'm all for it. The Invisible Man is a film that has been the least seen out of all the Universal monster films, but it is one of the creepiest and haunting films out of the bunch. The story has been told in a modern text before in the film Hollow Man (a guilty pleasure for me), but I think this being a true adaptation of the 1940 film is going to be pretty great. I think Johnny Depp taking on the role is an interesting take and it's nice to see Universal is getting behind this universe by getting high quality talent. I mean you have Tom Cruise in The Mummy reboot and now you have Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man and I'm looking forward to seeing who they get for the other monsters in the universe.

Having proven herself rather deadly behind the wheel in last year’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlize Theron is reportedly eyeing the Fast 8 villain role. Variety reports that the Academy Award winning actress has entered talks to star in director F. Gary Gray’s upcoming entry in the Universal Pictures franchise. Fast 8 is set to hit theaters April 14, 2017 and is planned to launch a new trilogy of films. Whether or not that means multiple films for the Fast 8 villain remains to be seen. Fast 8 will be followed by a ninth film to be released April 19, 2019 and a tenth film planned to hit theaters April 2, 201. Fast and Furious 8, 9 and 10 aren’t the only films new that Universal has planned for the franchise, either. It was recently revealed that plans are underway for both Fast and Furious spinoffs and prequels. Vin Diesel is confirmed to return for Fast 8 with with franchise regulars Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black reprising their roles as street racers-turned-international criminals-turned-super-secret agents. Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson and Kurt Russell are expected to return as well. Principal photography Fast 8 is planned to take place in both New York and Atlanta, Georgia. Recent reports suggest that two other possible locations for the film could be the previously-unexplored Russia and Iceland.

If this holds true then this is terrific casting. Charlize Theron is just a tremendous actress and being an Academy Award winning actress helps and after seeing her in Mad Max: Fury Road, I think this is the perfect role for her. She has played the villain plenty of times and her best role as villain came when she won her Academy Award for her haunting performance in Monster and I'm glad to see she is willing to play a villain again. The Fast & Furious franchise has become insanely huge over the past few years and this will be a great platform for her to show off her skills even more in an action role. I think that she is going to play the girlfriend/wife of Jason Statham's character and they will work together on this film and that is something that makes me even more excited to see the film and I can't wait.

Warner Bros. Pictures has today shifted their release schedule, most notably moving the Ready Player One release date back three months. Look for the Steven Spielberg film to hit theaters March 30, 2018. The original Ready Player One release date had the film opening on December 15, 2017, which recently became the new slot for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. The new Ready Player One release date will see the film opening opposite an as-of-yet unrevealed Universal Monsters film. Warner Bros. has, meanwhile, scheduled an unspecified “event” release for March 2, 2018, a New Line tentpole for April 20, 2018, and shifted the release of their untitled DC Comics film (likely The Flash) up by a single week, debuting it March 16, 2017. In all three cases, the WB titles are the first films to claim those respective dates. Set in the near future, Ready Player One follows outcast teenager Wade Watts, who escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging in to the OASIS, a globally networked virtual utopia where users can lead idyllic alternate lives. When the eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first. Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Bates Motel) will star as Ar3mis, an OASIS avatar belonging to the coincidentally-named Samantha Cook. Ben Mendelsohn (Mississippi Grind, The Dark Knight Rises), meanwhile, is attached to play the story’s villain. A Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures production, Ready Player One is based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name. The film is being directed by Spielberg, who is also producing alongside Donald De Line, under his De Line Pictures banner, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger. Bruce Berman will serve as executive producer.

I really like this move. Look Star Wars proved that it is going to be a force (no pun intended) now that the franchise is back and putting anything against it is a huge risk and I'm glad to see Warner Bros. recognizing that. However I don't agree with them pushing it back three months. I mean granted you want to push back to have more time compared to movie it up and having to rush production. I think this film could've come out in September of 2017 mainly due to the fact that September is a prime month for a big blockbuster, yet no one is taking advantage of it and I think this film could work at that time. This is a film I'm really looking forward to, but I'm a little upset that I have to wait a little longer for the film to come out.

Just yesterday, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema announced that director David Frankel’s Collateral Beauty, starring Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Naomie Harris and Michael Pena, would open in theaters on December 16, 2016, the same date that Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm previously scheduled Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Now, Variety is reporting that Star Wars: The Phantom Menace alum Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Imitation Game) has joined the Collateral Beauty cast. Collateral Beauty centers on a New York advertising executive (Smith) who experiences a deep personal tragedy. His colleagues devise an unconventional plan to break him out of his depression, which works – but not in a way that anyone imagined. The PalmStar Media and Likely Story project is produced by Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar and Bard Dorros, along with Allan Loeb, who wrote the script. Palmstar CEO Kevin Frakes will executive produce with Anthony Bregman of Likely Story and Steven Pearl. Smith’s Overbrook will co-produce.

I really like this casting Keira Knightley is an actress who has gotten a bad rap and I really don't understand why. I think she is a tremendous actress who really brings a lot to the table and does a serviceable job in every film she is in and it's been proven by her receiving an Academy Award nomination. I think this is a film she could really shine in being opposite of Will Smith. The film itself sounds interesting, but for some reason I just don't know of the film itself can be good. I don't know if going head-to-head with Rogue One is great idea, but it will offer counter-programming for those that don't want to see Rogue One or if they can't get a ticket.

Alchemy has released the new trailer for Oscar-nominated director Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster. The romantic satire stars Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, and also features John C. Reilly, Lea Seydoux, Olivia Colman and Ben Whishaw and you can check out The Lobster trailer below. There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods. A desperate Man escapes from The Hotel to The Woods where The Loners live and falls in love, although it is against their rules. Lanthimos penned the script with Efthimis Filippou and produced the film along with Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday and Ceci Dempsey. Sam Lavender, Andrew Lowe and Tessa Ross executive produced. Element Pictures, Scarlet Films, Faliro House, Haut et Court, Lemming Film produced The Lobster in association with Protagonist Pictures and Limp. Protagonist Pictures is handling international sales. Alchemy will release The Lobster in theaters on March 11.

This was a really weird trailer for what looks to be a very weird film. I honestly don't know what to say other than the film looks like it could be a sleeper hit and a possible Oscar contender. I've heard nothing but absolute praise for the film and I can see why. The cast for this film is just outstanding and it's stacked with Oscar level talent and strangely enough I';m actually looking forward to checking the film out.
