Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

You’ll never see the ending of Star Wars, and there’s no better way to be reminded of the dominance of the franchise than a Walt Disney Company quarterly earnings call. Speaking about the profitability of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its merchandise, CEO Bob Iger revealed that not only has production begun on Star Wars: Episode VIII, but also that work on Star Wars: Episode IX is underway too. “Filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII, the next chapter of the legendary saga, has just commenced and it will be in theaters December 2017. And production of Episode IX, a 2019 release, has also begun.” Iger went on to speak about the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, saying filming is almost finished, a bit of a surprise since production began back in September. “Filming of Rogue One is virtually completed and we absolutely love what we’ve seen so far.” He went on to confirm that the planned Han Solo movie, written by Lawrence Kasdan & Jon Kasdan and to be directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller, is still set to debut in May 2018. This may surprise some given Star Wars: Episode VIII‘s recent move to December, which appears to be the home for Star Wars for the foreseeable future. Rogue One is set to star Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk, Killing Them Softly), Ben Mendelsohn (“Bloodline,” Mississippi Grind), Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Blade II), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly, Devils on the Doorstep), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal,” Casino Royale), Alan Tudyk (“Firefly”), who plays a performance-capture character in the film, and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler, Four Lions). Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film will be released on December 16, 2016. Star Wars: Episode VIII will star Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, and even more newcomers to the series. The Rian Johnson-directed film will be released on December 15, 2017.
This is great news to hear. As you all know I am a huge fan of Star Wars and I was a massive fan of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and I'm so glad production has started. This is going to give Rian Johnson a year and a half to complete his vision and giving a guy like him this much time just excites me. While JJ Abrams may have had the tougher job in the sense that he had to make a film that a lot of people enjoyed and brought the franchise back whereas Johnson has basically no pressure a lot of freedom to do what he wants and if you've seen his previous films then you can't help but get excited. I wasn't a big fan of the change of the release date, but I understand it completely and I'm just really looking forward to the film.
In summer 2014, Sony Pictures Entertainment and SEGA SAMMY Group’s animation wing, Marza Animation Planet, announced a partnership to develop a film based on the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise. Now, a new interview with SEGA CEO Hajime Satomi at Worldfolio (via io9) confirms that the project is not only still in the wings but on a fast-paced trajectory for a 2018 opening. “Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie scheduled for release in 2018,” Satomi confirmed. “Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.” The film will look to capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit, reuniting him with some of the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise, including the evil Dr. Eggman. Playful, mischievous, and quick on his feet in more ways than one, the world’s fastest hedgehog is known for his ability to move at supersonic speed to protect his friends from their enemies. For more than two decades, Sonic has been one of the world’s biggest gaming icons and a $1 billion franchise with more than 140 million games sold. Sonic previously headline several animated series starting with 1993’s “Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog” as well as making an authorized cameo appearance in the Disney hit Wreck-It Ralph (see gallery below). A hybrid CG-animated/live-action feature, the movie will be written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux and produced by Neal H. Moritz through his Original Film banner, along with Marzas Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi. Toby Ascher will serve as an executive producer.
This is fantastic news. Sonic the Hedgehog is an iconic property that has gotten massive over the years for new generations to love and to finally see a film come to the big screen excites me. I'm glad that Sony has the confidence to make this property into a film and they are really beginning to make a push with a few of their video game properties. I'm not a big fan of the fact that it is going to be a CGI/live-action hybrid because I don't want this film to turn into a Smurfs film where the CGI and live-action just didn't mix and this is a property that can succeed and have multiple sequels.
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have revealed the first trailer for The Purge: Election Year, the third chapter in the “Purge” franchise coming to theaters on July 1, 2016. You can check out The Purge: Election Year trailer below. Expanding the universe introduced in the hit franchise that electrified the culture and earned $200 million at the worldwide box office, Universal Pictures’ The Purge: Election Year reveals the next terrifying chapter that occurs over 12 hours of annual lawlessness sanctioned by the New Founders of America to keep this country great. It’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn…or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state. Once again returning to collaborate with franchise creator James DeMonaco on The Purge: Election Year are the series’ producers: Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Insidious and Ouija series, The Visit), Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ouija series, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and writer/director DeMonaco’s longtime production partner, Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers). The new film features the return of Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Grey) alongside Elizabeth Mitchell, Edwin Hodge, Betty Gabriel, JJ Soria and Mykelti Williamson. Grillo starred in the second film, The Purge: Anarchy, which earned $110.6 million on a budget of just $9 million in 2014.
I really like this trailer a lot. It feels a little bit like the last film, but it also has a lot of originality to it as well. My biggest complaint with the first Purge film is the fact that it didn't focus on the world at large and instead optioned to focus on a single family which made the world feel small and it made the film just really boring and stupid. I can't hate on the first purge film too much as it was the film that started the blog, but the first film is really terrible. However the second film went the complete opposite direction and we got to see more of the world while the purge is taking place which opened up a lot of possibilities. This one is focusing on someone wanting to put the event to an end and people wanting to stop that person. I think this film is going to be a massive hit this summer and I'm actually looking forward to it.
A surprising new potential addition to the Alien: Covenant cast has emerged today as The Wrap brings word that Eastbound and Down star Danny McBride has entered early talks for a role. Should he sign on, Danny McBride will join the returning Michael Fassbender alongside franchise newcomer Katherine Waterston. Fassbender reprises his role as Prometheus‘ android, David, while Waterston is set to play a woman named Daniels. Set as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, Alien: Covenant connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. It begins with the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. There, the crew discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. Primarily known for comedy roles, Danny McBride starred last year in Barry Levinson’s Rock the Kasbah and in Cameron Crowe’s Aloha. Coming up, McBride is set to headline the HBO series Vice Principals opposite Walton Goggins and is also serving as the series’ writer and executive producer alongside frequent collaborator Jody Hill. On the big screen, Danny McBride will soon be lending his voice to the animated feature films The Angry Birds Movie and the R-rated Sausage Party. Jack Paglen (Transcendence) and Michael Green (Green Lantern) are providing the Alien: Covenant screenplay. The project is entering production in Australia with 20th Century Fox set to distribute the film in theaters on October 6, 2017.
This is really surprising casting. Look I'm a huge fan of Danny McBride and he is one of the funniest actors on the planet, but I just don't see how he fits into this universe. Whenever he is on screen I just can't take him seriously because I feel that he is going to crack a joke all the time and this film doesn't need that. Now granted he could up doing really well with the role and he could surprise us all with his dramatic chops, but this is still a puzzling choice. I trust Ridley Scott, but this may be the worst decision he's ever made film wise.
Sony Pictures has released a new The Brothers Grimsby Red Band trailer that you can check out in the player below. The spy spoof stars Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno) as an unruly soccer hooligan and Mark Strong (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as his brother, a top level super spy. If you missed the first Brothers Grimbsy Red Band trailer, you can check it out right here. In the film, Nobby (Sacha Baron Cohen) has everything a man from Grimsby could want, including 11 children and the most gorgeous girlfriend in the northeast of England (Rebel Wilson). There’s only one thing missing: his little brother, Sebastian (Mark Strong), who Nobby has spent 28 years searching for after they were separated as kids. Nobby sets off to reunite with Sebastian, unaware that not only is his brother MI6’s deadliest assassin, but he’s just uncovered plans for an imminent global terrorist attack. On the run and wrongfully accused, Sebastian realizes that if he is going to save the world, he will need the help of its biggest idiot. Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans) directs The Brothers Grimsby from a script by Sacha Baron Cohen and Phil Johnston (Wreck-It Ralph). It co-stars Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Zoolander No. 2) as the head of a philanthropic organization, alongside Isla Fisher (Now You See Me, Rango) and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious, Seven Psychopaths). Columbia Pictures (Sony) will release The Brothers Grimsby in theaters on March 11, 2016.
This was an absolutely hilarious trailer. When I first heard about this film I was a little confused at first, but now the trailers have really gotten me excited to see the film. I'm a big fan of both Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong and they are the perfect pair to play brothers opposite of each other. This film is going to push the envelope quite more than we are used to seeing from Sacha Baron Cohen and I'm looking forward to seeing how far he will og. There were a lot of quick jokes in this trailer and I hope that there is at least somewhat of a build towards the jokes and that they aren't as quick as they are in this trailer.
