My Review of Race

So I recently watched Race and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...............

Young Jesse Owens (played by Stephan James) becomes a track and field sensation while attending the Ohio State University in the early 1930s. With guidance from coach Larry Snyder (played by Jason Sudeikis), Owens gains national recognition for breaking numerous records. After heated debates, the United States decides not to boycott the Olympics in Nazi Germany. Overcoming racism at home and abroad, Owens seizes the opportunity to show Berlin and the the world that he's the fastest man alive.

This film is a little disappointing. Bio-pics have to be done in a way where you have to keep the audience intrigued by showing key events in the person's life and how they affected said person's life and this film just doesn't do that. It shows a lot of the different events that Jesse Owens competed in, but they take no time to develop anything leading to events or how they made an impact afterwards. The performances are pretty great and Stephen James really embodies Jesse Owens and this was his first feature film and he'll get a lot of great roles in the near future. Jason Sudekis also takes his first stab at a dramatic role and he does really well and he is proving that he can be a viable actor for a lot of different genres. While there are some great performances in the film, there is not a lot of character development and you don't get to know them well enough for you to care when the attempted emotional moments happen. There are scene that try to build a lot of emotion behind the fact that Jesse Owens was facing tremendous odds and none of it really comes tor fruition and it just becomes overwhelming and almost unnecessary. The film is really cliched and it just follows the same formula that every sport bio-pic does and it brings nothing new to the genre and at times the film gets really boring. Overall the film has magnificent performances and it had an opportunity to be a special bio-pic and instead it fails on a lot of levels. I give Race a 4 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Race, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
