Weekend Movie News 10-16-15 to 10-18-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

With a new trailer arriving on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” tomorrow along with the start of ticket sales, Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Pictures have released the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster, which you can view below. The trailer will debut on Monday, October 19, during halftime of the National Football League (NFL) game between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia. The game starts at 5:15 p.m. PDT/8:15 p.m. EDT. Following the trailer launch, tickets to the highly-anticipated cinematic event will be on sale everywhere movie tickets are sold. Opening in theaters on December 18, 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and features a new generation of swashbuckling heroes and shadowy villains, as well as the return of fan-favorite smugglers, princesses, and Jedi. Directed by J.J. Abrams, the highly-anticipated movie stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk are producing with Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Lawrence Kasdan & J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I really love this poster. A lot of people have said that it's a bland poster or that there's too much going on and while I do tend to agree with their arguments, it still doesn't bring down how much I love this poster. You may not realize it, but this does give away quite a bit without saying so. One of things that it kind of confirms is that Luke Skywalker won't have a big role in the film eventhough he is second billing. I think he'll play a big part in the third act, but it's honestly untelling right now and I'm actually surprised he was left off of the poster. The second thing that really stands out, is how even the parallel is between Kylo Ren's lightsaber and Rey's staff which builds upon a very popular and an almost likely theory that Kylo Ren and Rey are related and they might even be the Solo twins mentioned in the novels. As for the idea to release a new trailer during halftime of Monday Night Football is a great idea simply because it's basically free marketing since Disney owns ESPN and it also bring a lot of publicity to the game itself between my New York Giants and that I could care less about. Overall the poster is amazing and the marketing makes sense and I'm going to enjoy this game a whole lot more.

Director Matt Reeves revealed today that War for the Planet of the Apes filming has started. The new movie is scheduled for a July 14, 2017 release. The announced apes cast so far includes Andy Serkis, reprising his Caesar role, and Steve Zahn. On the human side, the War for the Planet of the Apes cast includes Gabriel Chavarria (“East Los High”) and Woody Harrelson (“True Detective,” Zombieland). Reeves co-wrote the script for the sequel with Mark Bomback. “I know that part of the desire for Matt [Reeves] to do this next movie is about continuing the enjoyment of seeing these apes evolve. So I don’t think we’re going to see a situation where we’re jumping [ahead in time],” series star Andy Serkis said of the film last year. “…It might be three films, It could be four. It could be five. Who knows? But the journey will continue. It might not necessarily be summarized or completely fulfilled in this next one. The point being, eventually we know that we’re going to end up back at ‘The Planet of the Apes,’ but whether it’s this film or not, I don’t know.” “The notion of what we’re after with the third is to sort of continue that trajectory and see how he becomes a seminal figure in ape history,” Reeves previously told us. “He almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses. A mythic status… We’re trying to play out those themes and continue to sort of explore it in this universe. Exploring human nature under the guise of apes.”

This is great news to hear. It makes this film seem so much more real and it just begins my anticipation to see the film. From the photo that was tweeted out, it seems like we end the film on the very beach that was at the end of the original Planet of the Apes film and that makes a lot of sense. The reason for that is because with the way Dawn of the Planet of the Apes left off and with this having War in the title instead leads to this great war that we've heard in the older incarnations of this franchise. So far the casting for this film has been spot on and I'm really looking forward to this film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, fan-fav actress Rosario Dawson (Death Proof, Clerks II) has just signed on to the voice cast of Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Batman Movie playing Barbara Gordon, daughter of police commissioner Jim Gordon, who eventually takes up the crime-fighting mantle as Batgirl. Dawson joins a cast that includes Will Arnett as the titular Dark Knight, Michael Cera as the boy wonder Robin, and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker. No stranger to the comic book realm, Dawson has starred in big screen adaptations like Men in Black II, Sin City and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and is currently earning lots of love for her role as Claire Temple/Night Nurse in Netflix and Marvel’s “Daredevil” show as well as their upcoming “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage” series. She has also lent her voice to DC’s direct-to-DVD animated movies of Wonder Woman (playing Artemis) and Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (as Wonder Woman), and will voice Elaris in the upcoming big screen video game adaptation of Ratchet & Clank. The LEGO Movie animation supervisor Chris McKay will direct The LEGO Batman Movie, which features a script by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter creator Seth Grahame-Smith. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed The LEGO Movie and are also developing an animated version of Spider-Man for Sony, will produce the film along with Dan Lin. The LEGO Batman Movie will swing into theaters on May 26, 2017.

I think this is great casting. I really enjoy Rosario Dawson is just about everything she is in and she is killing it on Daredevil right now. Her playing Barbra Gordon/Batgirl is really interesting because their are several ways they can with the film. One thing I would love to see is more of less violent The Killing Joke in which Barbra Gordon is shot in the spine by The Joker and becomes paralyzed, but it still might be too dark for a LEGO film. I'm excited to see what kind of story they are going to tell and so far this voice cast is really talented and I'm excited to see the film after the success and how much I loved The LEGO Movie.

The trailer for next year’s Ratchet and Clank movie has arrived and you can check it out in the player below. Gramercy Pictures will release the Ratchet and Clank movie nationwide on April 29, 2016. A CG-animated movie based on the iconic PlayStation video game, the Ratchet and Clank movie follows two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind, a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity. Directed Kevin Munroe and co-directed by Jericca Cleland, the Ratchet and Clank movie was also scripted by Munroe alongside T.J. Fixman and Gerry Swallow. The voice cast includes Paul Giamatti (American Splendor, Love & Mercy), John Goodman (The Big Lebowski, The Monuments Men), Bella Thorne (The DUFF, Alexander and Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day), Rosario Dawson (“Marvel’s Daredevil,” Sin City), Jim Ward (WALL-E, “The Fairly Oddparents”) James Arnold Taylor (“Johnny Test,” “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”), David Kaye (Up, “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”), Armin Shimerman (“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and Sylvester Stallone (The Expendables, Creed).

This is an absolutely terrible trailer. Now I know it's an animated movie, but it just feels way to cartoony and the jokes just didn't go over well at all. As someone who has never played the games, I'm going into this totally blind, but I've heard from people who have played the games say that it looks nothing like the game and the dialogue seemed childish. You can definitely tell they are targeting the younger audience, but I feel like you should appeal to the fans of the game. Also the narration over the trailer was unbearable and it really turned me off from the trailer. Hopefully that won't be the case with the film, but at this point it's not looking good at all.

Dominic Toretto and the Fast & Furious crew have gone up against trains, tanks and military drones, but in Furious 8 they will face a far more malicious enemy: New York weather. That’s right, Vin Diesel has gone on “The Tonight Show” (via Hulu) and told Jimmy Fallon that the next installment in the road racers-turned-international-superspies franchise will create multiple fender benders in the Big Apple, and Diesel’s New York audience seemed mighty pleased by the news. Check out the full video clip of the interview below to see Diesel give a shout-out to his hometown! “New York, baby!” Diesel exclaimed when Fallon asked about the new film’s setting. “Something that people don’t know is the first movie came from a Vibe article that was about street racers in New York. The director and producer at the time reset the whole movie in LA, but the Vibe article that the whole franchise was started from actually originated in New York. So we’re finally BRINGING IT BACK HOME, BABY!” Diesel announced Furious 8 at this year’s CinemaCon after the unprecedented success of the seventh film, which earned $1.511 billion at the worldwide box office, and he along with Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson and Kurt Russell are expected to return, along with franchise regulars Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black reprising their roles as street racers-turned-international criminals-turned-super-secret agents. To be directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Italian Job), Universal Pictures will deliver Furious 8 for an April 14, 2017 release. The film will be the start of a new trilogy that will close out the franchise.

This isn't surprising news to hear at all. In every film of the franchise they have went all over the world 1st film- LA, 2nd film- Miami, 3rd film- Tokyo, 4th film- Mexico, 5th film- Rio, 6th film- London and 7th film- Dubai/LA. New York is one of the biggest cities they haven't been to yet so why not go there. I really enjoyed Furious 7 and it was a nice sendoff for Paul Walker's character and it surprised everyone when it made over $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office so I'm anxious to see how well this film does financially and I think F. Gary Gray will make the story of the film the best one yet.
