So I recently watched The Martian and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring "the Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return.
This is an outstanding film. Ridley Scott was once know as one of the greatest directors of all-time and here lately he hasn't been himself and people were wondering if he would ever get back to making quality films and with this film he is. This is a beautiful film and there were only handful of people who could direct this film and Ridley Scott is one of them and he is back. What also can't be understated is the performance of Matt Damon (even in a very crowded year of really good performances) could and deserves to get nominated for an Oscar. His character is really likable and throughout the film you are rooting for him in every little thing he does. The supporting cast is absolutely stacked with both talent and outstanding performances and it's been said a lot this year, but this is one of the best ensembles in a film this year. The standouts were Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels who are both known for their comedy chops, give really amazing dramatic performances and they could also get nominations. The visuals are really gorgeous and the film might just walk away with the Best Visual Effects Oscar (depending on how Star Wars Episode VII does). While the film is intriguing and you are interested in this character and his story of survival, it didn't really captivate like it should've and to me personally I just wasn't hooked 100%. Overall this is a really fantastic film and it's one of the best of the year, it didn't grab a hold of you emotionally. I give The Martian a 9 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of The Martian, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
