10-12-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Whether you were among those who think Mad Max: Fury Road was the action masterpiece of the year or the tiny minority in dissent of that fact, both groups can agree on one thing: Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa was the real star of the movie, not Tom Hardy’s Max Rockatansky. The badass warrior chick valiantly rode her way into movie valhalla, but according to Digital Spy‘s interview with franchise mastermind George Miller, the iconic Furiosa may wind up being a one-movie wonder, as she will (apparently) not play an integral role in the Mad Max sequel. “I’m not sure, is the answer,” Miller said about the potential for Theron to return. “She’s not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.” Of course, these are still early days on the Mad Max 5 and 6 front, although with Blu-ray/DVD sales going through the roof, it seems like only a matter of time before Hardy slaps on the leather jacket again to meet the challenges a post-apocalyptic landscape has to offer. Even the proposed title Miller previously revealed for the next movie, “Mad Max: The Wasteland,” is also apparently in flux. “That name came out, that was just a working title,” he said. “Nico Lathouris and I wrote deep backstories on all the characters and they eventually became screenplays – so we have two [more movies]. I’m happy to say that there’s discussions about them right now, but I hope the next film I make is a very small without any special effects and not many stunts.” Whatever the 70-year-old Miller does next, it’s good to know that one of the few working filmmakers who can truly be called a visionary is officially on the radar of a new generation of filmgoers thanks to the fuel-injected madness that was Mad Max: Fury Road. As Oscar season enters full swing, expect to hear more from Miller about the Mad Max sequel as Fury Road goes up for a slew of technical awards… and potentially one for Theron as well.

This isn't that surprising to hear. Look I'm a huge fan of Mad Max:Fury Road and Charlize Theron was easily the best part (aside from the action) of the film, but that doesn't mean she deserves her own spin-off film. To be perfectly honest, I don't know how you can make a film based off of her character. She didn't seem to have an interesting backstory other than how she was able to drive the rig in the first place. I'm excited for the sequel to come out (hopefully it doesn't take over 30 years like this past film), but I could care less about a Furiosa spin-off film.

Rumors have been circulating for years about what Marvel Studios would do with Mark Ruffalo’s The Hulk following 2012’s The Avengers, and after the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the character’s fate is still very much up in the air, literally. Now, JoBlo brings word that the giant green rage monster might be appearing earlier than 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and he’ll be teaming up with a fellow avenger. According to the site, The Hulk will team up with Thor in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, bringing the two together after their little scuffles in The Avengers. The film will reportedly center on a “distant planet” that is “not Asgard and not Earth.” It’s unclear what this planet is or will be in the context of the film, though the constant rumors (amid denials) of a “Planet Hulk” film will likely lead to much speculation. Thor: Ragnarok will close out the Asgardian trilogy with a screenplay by Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World) and Craig Kyle (producer on previous two Thor films), and will continue the cliffhanger of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) having secretly taken the throne in guise of his adoptive father Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Flight of the Conchords and What We Do in the Shadows helmer Taika Waititi is in negotiations to direct the upcoming film. Marvel Studios will release Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017 in 3D/2D theaters and IMAX.

If these rumors hold true then I'm not surprised by it at all. Look The Hulk has his own standalone film in Phase 1, but it wasn't Mark Ruffalo (rather it was Edward Norton), then in Phases 2 he wasn't seen until except for a post-credit scene in Iron Man 3 and The Avengers: Age of Ultron so he has to be seen more before The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2 and this is the film to that in. Thor and Hulk are the two most powerful Avengers in the MCU and with what could be happening in Thor: Ragnarok, the Hulk will be needed. I'm excited to see this happen if it becomes true, but for now it is a rumor and while it does come from JoBlo (which is a site I trust a lot) I still need to hear something from Marvel and we may find out before the end of the year.

TheWrap brings word that Steve Zahn (“Treme,” Diary of a Wimpy Kid) has joined the War for the Planet of the Apes cast and will take on the role of one of the titular primates in the film. He’s joining Andy Serkis, who will reprise the role of Caesar. On the human side, the War for the Planet of the Apes cast will include Gabriel Chavarria (“East Los High”) and Woody Harrelson (“True Detective,” Zombieland). “I know that part of the desire for Matt [Reeves] to do this next movie is about continuing the enjoyment of seeing these apes evolve. So I don’t think we’re going to see a situation where we’re jumping [ahead in time],” series star Andy Serkis said of the film last year. “…It might be three films, It could be four. It could be five. Who knows? But the journey will continue. It might not necessarily be summarized or completely fulfilled in this next one. The point being, eventually we know that we’re going to end up back at ‘The Planet of the Apes,’ but whether it’s this film or not, I don’t know.” Reeves, who directed last year’s Dawn, will return for the sequel, the script for which he is co-writing with Mark Bomback. “The notion of what we’re after with the third is to sort of continue that trajectory and see how he becomes a seminal figure in ape history,” Reeves previously told us. “He almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses. A mythic status… We’re trying to play out those themes and continue to sort of explore it in this universe. Exploring human nature under the guise of apes.” War for the Planet of the Apes is set for release on July 14, 2017.

This is pretty great casting. I know a lot of people seem to be a little annoyed by Steve Zahn, but I think he is a high energy and funny guy, plus he's a Kentucky Basketball fan (like myslef) so I'm kinda forced to like eventhough I already do. This is going to be an interesting role for him and I'm wondering if he is just going to play some other ape or if he'll play a crucial role in the film much like Toby Kebbell did as Koba in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. So far this cast is pretty amazing and hopefully it can be as good, if not better than the last film and I'm really looking forward to this film.

Broad Green Pictures announced today a partnership with Imagine Entertainment to produce and distribute an untitled film about the infamous Los Angeles riots that helped to transform America’s ideas about race, justice and economics, and sparked massive change in the Los Angeles Police Department. John Ridley, the Academy Award-winning 12 Years a Slave scribe and creator of the Emmy Award-winning American Crime, will direct the film from his own screenplay. Fellow Academy Award winner Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster) will produce. In April of 1992, America’s worst civil disturbance in the 20th century took place in Los Angeles. Sparked by the acquittal of four LAPD officers tried for the near-fatal beating of black motorist Rodney King and fueled by racial tension, growing despair surrounding the economic climate, and a deep-seated distrust of law enforcement, the riots left the city devastated. Looting and fires ravaged Los Angeles for four straight days leaving more than 50 dead and 2,300 injured, an estimated $1 billion in property damage and the city divided. Based on true events, the film tells the story through the eyes of several key figures involved in the uprising and the events that led to it. Broad Green Pictures founders CEO Gabriel Hammond and Chief Creative Officer Daniel Hammond said, “This is a seminal event in our country’s history, the reverberations of which are still far too relevant today. We were blown away by John’s amazing screenplay and we know that under his direction and the aegis of Imagine the film will be truly incredible. This is why we started this company. To make movies like this.” “We have barely seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of John Ridley’s talent,” said Grazer. “I am confident that he will capture the magnitude of the events that unfolded and the issues that led up to them. He will show the world why the riots cannot and should not be forgotten.” Victor Moyers and Asher Goldstein will oversee the project for Broad Green Pictures. Anna Culp and Alexandre Dauman will oversee the project for Imagine Entertainment. John Ridley will begin principal photography on the LA riots film in spring 2016.

I think this is a pretty interesting choice. Now while John Ridley is a tremendous writer and that's no doubt as he is an Academy Award winning writer for his work on 12 Years A Slave, but his directing efforts haven't been that great. He's only directed two films so far and one of those was the Jimi Hendrix bio-pic "Jimi: All is by My Side" and that movie was pretty bad. Now I think that this is a movie where he can really sink his teeth into a make a great film. I'm very interested in which angle he this film will cover and who the cast is and this film can be really great if all of those things come togehter well.

It was announced last month that UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey will headline MGM‘s upcoming remake Road House. Today, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the Road House remake has found a director in Nick Cassavetes. Cassavetes is best known for helming films like John Q, The Notebook and Alpha Dog. In the Road House remake, Ronda Rousey is is expected to play a female version of the character Patrick Swayze played in the 1989 original. Road House, produced by Joel Silver, starred the late Patrick Swayze as a bouncer hired to tame a rowdy bar in Missouri called “The Double Deuce.” Though the film only went on to gross just $30 million at the box office, it still managed to build a large cult following. “It is a great honor to play a part in celebrating the life of a man that inspired so many,” Rousey posted to Twitter when the Road House remake was first announced. “I couldn’t be more grateful to have this opportunity to pay respect to the beloved Patrick Swayze…I promise to work incessantly to make sure this project is a tribute his family and fans can be proud of.” Rousey has transitioned from fighting in the ring to fighting on the big screen recently with roles in The Expendables 3, Furious 7, and a cameo as herself in the Entourage movie. The fighter is also set to star as herself in Paramount Pictures’ adaptation of her own New York Times best-selling autobiography, My Fight/Your Fight. Plans for a Road House remake date back as far as 2013 with XXX and The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen attached, though it ultimately never materialized. Production on the Road House remake is slated to begin next year.

I think this is a great choice. I've really enjoyed a few films of his (the one mentioned in the article) and this seems like a good avenue for him to go it in. Now if this remake is anything like The Other Woman, then I'm coming for this guy's head because one he would end up screwing up a film I really enjoy and plus The Other Woman was one of my least favorite films of 2014. I'm still a little hesitant about this especially with Rhonda Rousey's acting abilities being so terrible, but I'm still holding out hope for this film to be pretty good.
