My Review of Bridge of Spies

So I recently watched Bridge of Spies and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Based on the 1960 U-2 incident, the film is set during the Cold War and tells the story of lawyer James B. Donovan (played by Tom Hanks) who is entrusted with negotiating the release of Francis Gary Powers (played by Austin Stowell)—a pilot whose U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union—in exchange for Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), a captive Soviet KGB spy held under the custody of the United States.

This was a decent, but not great film. Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg have teamed up for several movies in the past and they've all be spectacular (Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal) and to be honest this is their worst film together yet. Now the film isn't terrible in the slightest bit, but it just doesn't live up to the standards of the previous films mentioned and it doesn't feel like a Spielberg film. Tome Hanks does give a brilliant performance, but it isn't the best one he's given and despite some of the attention he has been getting Oscar wise, I personally don't see him getting a nomination and, but it wouldn't be a shock if he does. The Coen Brothers are a great pair when they are writing for a film they are directing, but their style just doesn't fit well with either this film nor did it in 2014's Unbroken directed by Angelina Jolie. It almost feels like they've been held back by the directors they've been working for and I think tit would've been neat to see them direct this film. It does have a few emotional scenes and it does tell a story that a lot of people didn't know about (myself included) and eventhough films shouldn't be used for a history lesson, it was nice to learn something new historically through a film. Overall the story is emotional and it's one that needed to be told, but if you didn't tell me Spielberg directed this then I would believe you because it doesn't seem like his type of film. I give Bridge of Spies an 8 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Bridge of Spies, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
