10-5-15/10-6-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Since I didn't get to bring you news from yesterday I figured that I would combine today's and yesterday's news (3 stories from each day). So here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

Though it may not have lit the global box office on fire, bringing in just over $370 million worldwide, Mad Max: Fury Road captured the attention of fans around the globe and went on to become one of the highest-rated blockbusters of the summer. Talks of Mad Max sequels have permeated ever since, and speaking with Top Gear, director George Miller confirmed that two more scripts have already been written. “This film [Fury Road] was green lit three times and fell over three times over a decade. We went to shoot with Mel Gibson back in 2001, but then 9/11 happened, and the American dollar collapsed against the Australian dollar close to 30 per cent, so we lost that amount of budget overnight….We were then rained out of Australia. The desert rained for the first time in 15 years, and we ended up in South West Africa, Namibia. But in this process, we had dug down deep into the backstory, not only of the characters, but of every vehicle. How the steering wheels became religious artifacts and things like that. So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying. We’re talking to the studio [Warner Bros] about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next, I’m not so sure.” Miller went on to reiterate, however, that he would like to do a small movie next with limited special effects and no stunts, the same reason he cited he wouldn’t direct a Man of Steel follow-up. “Fury Road” arrived in theaters thirty years after the third film in the series, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Hopefully we won’t have to wait that long for the next legend of the Road Warrior. The film starred Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

This is fantastic news to hear. As a lot of you all know I absolutely loved Mad Max: Fury Road as of right now it's still my favorite film of 2015 although a small film coming out on December could overtake that spot. I'm also a huge fan of the Mad Max franchise and I'm glad that it is finally coming back into the mainstream. I'm really interested to see how Miller will build upon the story because to be honest their isn't really any story to any of the Mad Max films. I think with the success of Fury Road, Miller won't have a hard time getting two sequels through the entire production without any problems.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter author Seth Grahame-Smith has been tapped to write and direct Warner Bros. upcoming The Flash movie! The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have written a treatment for the film, which they were considering to direct, but have since been tapped for the upcoming Han Solo movie from Disney and Lucasfilm. Grahame-Smith has previously written the screenplays for Dark Shadows, Beetlejuice 2, and the upcoming The LEGO Batman Movie. The film would mark his feature directorial debut, having previously directed two episodes of his short-lived TV series “The Hard Times of RJ Berger.” Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) will star as the titular hero in the upcoming film, which is set for release on March 3, 2018. Miller will make his debut as Barry Allen in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25, 2016 and in Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017. Though it’s been confirmed that the DC Entertainment television shows and feature films are unrelated, it will be interesting to see the correlation between Grant Gustin’s version of The Flash from the popular CW series and Miller’s version in the feature.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this. On one hand he seems like a really bad choice becuase of the films he has written like Dark Shadows and a polished version of the most recent Fantastic Four reboot and that makes me hesitant to trust him with a character we've never seen on the big screen before. On the other hand he is working a lot of projects that I'm looking forward to such as The LEGO Batman movie, Beetlejuice 2 and I'm curious to see how he will do with the treatment that Phil Lord and Chris Miller came up with.

With the Harry Potter spinoff already in production, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that three more stars have joined the cast of  Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Although no character information has been revealed, the new cast additions include Academy Award Winner Jon Voight (Coming Home, “Ray Donovan”), Carmen Ejogo (Selma, The Purge: Anarchy) and Gemma Chan (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Submarine). Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is already set to star Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Jenn Murray and newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove. The David Yates-directed film follows Newt Scamander (Redmayne), the Wizarding World’s preeminent magizoologist, who in his travels has encountered and documented a myriad of magical creatures, ultimately leading to his penning the Hogwarts School textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is being produced by David Heyman, producer of all eight of the blockbuster Harry Potter features; J.K. Rowling; Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one of the Harry Potter films; and Lionel Wigram, who served as an executive producer on the last four installments of the franchise. Rowling herself is supplying the screenplay. Warner Bros. Pictures has the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them set for a worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on November 18, 2016.

This is fantastic casting. Jon Voight is one of those legacy actors and is good in just about every film he is in. I think he'll bring a really different dynamic to this film that we haven't seen in the previous Harry Potter films. He can either play the villain or a supporting character to the hero and I'm curious to see who and what type of character he'll play. This cast is shaping up to be really good and I'm really excited to see this film next Christmas.

Following word yesterday that the Furious 8 director frontrunners had narrowed to four names, Vin Diesel has revealed that it’s now down to one – Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray. Diesel posted the above photo of himself with Gray from their talks about the next installment in the “Fast & Furious” franchise. The news comes just days after word broke that Diesel was pitching Universal Pictures the thought of having original The Fast and the Furious helmer Rob Cohen to direct the eighth big screen installment, or perhaps even Diesel taking it on himself. At the time, Diesel said they are looking to close out the franchise with a final trilogy. But yesterday, the list of potential Fast 8 helmers was said to be Straight Outta Compton‘s F. Gary Gray, Now You See Me‘s Louis Leterrier, The Signal‘s Will Eubank and You’re Next and The Guest‘s Adam Wingard. Diesel is a producer on the films, but he has no final say on the director. Gray has worked before with Diesel on A Man Apart and his credits also include The Italian Job, The Negotiator and Law Abiding Citizen. His $28-million budgeted Straight Outta Compton, released by Universal, earned an impressive $160 million domestically after opening in theaters on August 14. Diesel announced Fast 8 at this year’s CinemaCon after the unprecedented success of the seventh film, which earned $1.511 billion at the worldwide box office, and he along with Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson and Kurt Russell are expected to return, along with franchise regulars Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black reprising their roles as street racers-turned-international criminals-turned-super-secret agents. Universal Pictures will deliver Furious 8 for an April 14, 2017 release.

If everything works out then this is a fantastic choice. F. Gary Gray is an outstanding director and this will be a huge step up for him because he hasn't done something of this magnitude in his entire career. He does have experience with car movies because he did the 2003 remake of The Italian Job so I think he can handle the action well. He'll also bring a great dynamic to the story aspect and I think he'll be able to handle the emotional the aspect of Paul Walker's character not being in the franchise anymore.

A new trailer for Disney•Pixar‘s The Good Dinosaur has been released and can be watched below. Directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream, the film opens in theaters on November 25. The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo (voice of Raymond Ochoa; “The Night Shift,” “Rizzoli & Isles”) makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of. The film’s voice cast will also include Jeffrey Wright (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Steve Zahn (“Treme,” Saving Silverman), AJ Buckley (“Murder in the First,” “Justified”), Anna Paquin (“True Blood,” “X-Men”), Sam Elliot (“Justified,” The Big Lebowski). Frances McDormand (“Olive Kitteridge,” Fargo), Marcus Scribner (“black•ish”), and Jack Bright (Monsters University). Peter Sohn made his directorial debut with the Pixar short film Partly Cloudy. He has worked in the art, story and animation departments, and also has voiced the characters of Emile from Academy Award- winning Ratatouille and Scott “Squishy” Squibbles from Monsters University. Denise Ream produced the Golden Globe-nominated film Cars 2 for Pixar Animation Studios, and served as associate producer for Disney•Pixar’s Academy Award-winning film Up. She also has an extensive background in producing visual effects and animation for live action films.

I absolutely loved this trailer. It had a lot of the themes that you usually see in a Pixar film and that's all I want to see. I really like the emotion that it showed along with the heartwarming and comedic moments as well. I personally think this film is being overlooked when it comes to the films coming out this year and it could surprise a lot of people. If everything goes like I hope then it might just be better than Inside Out which is hard task to pull off.

TheWrap brings word that filmmaker Joe Robert Cole (Amber Lake) is in talks to write the script for Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther movie. Cole and Marvel Studios previously worked together, as a report last year revealed that he had written a draft of Marvel’s Inhumans feature, set for release on July 12, 2019. A previous draft of the Black Panther movie script was written by Mark Bailey. A director has yet to be chosen for the project following director Ava DuVernay’s reveal that she had turned down the opportunity. The outlet notes that Straight Outta Compton filmmaker F. Gary Gray was in contention, but Gray is now in talks to direct Furious 8, making the availability of the position “wide open.” Chadwick Boseman is set to star as the title hero in Black Panther, which is set for release on July 6, 2018. It’s unclear what other characters will appear in the film, though Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaw, who made his debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, could appear as the pair have already allegedly crossed paths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Boseman will make his debut as the character in Captain America: Civil War, slated to debut in theaters May 6, 2016.

This is a really interesting choice. This guy has only done one film and he directed that film as well. I honestly don't know what Marvel sees in him to have faith in him writing the script for this film. He is writing the script for The Inhumans movie so they must see something in him. I have never questioned Marvel on any choice they've made until now and hopefully this guy can prove me wrong and deliver a great script.
