Weekend Movie News 5-15-15 to 5-17-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Universal Pictures has debuted the very first teaser trailer and image of Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs, the late Apple founder and CEO, in the movie from Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, which co-stars Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels, Katherine Waterston and Michael Stuhlbarg. Written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, the official plot summary is: “Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.” You can check out the first teaser trailer below. Steve Jobs is scheduled for release on Friday, October 9.

This was a pretty decent trailer. It didn't really give away much, but it still showed enough to at least wet our appetites. This film has went through a lot of different changes from who will be playing Steve Jobs, to the director and it even changed studios (it was a Sony before Universal) and I'm finally glad to see that the film is happening. It has a lot (and I mean a lot) of Oscar potential and I cannot wait to see it.

Following his breakout roles in Mud, Magic Mike, Dallas Buyers Club, and “True Detective,” actor Matthew McConaughey has been more in-demand than ever before and apparently Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. wanted him in their respective cinematic universes. Speaking with Variety, McConaughey was asked if he’d ever consider being in a superhero movie and revealed that he has been courted by both studios before. “I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I’ll share with with you what they are — or were. Yeah, I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it.” McConaughey was then asked what would convince him to be a part of one, saying: “It’s very simple for me. I look at the script. Is the opportunity exciting? Is the moneythat comes with it exciting? Sure. Is it the possibility of going, ‘Hey you can get on a train and it can be a franchise and you could do 3, 4, 5, and have a great time as some kind of superhero or anti-hero.’ But I would also look at something like that and say, ‘Hey, in success that means you are on the train for a while.’ Contractually, you’re going to return to the character over and over. It’s something I asked myself is it something I’d want to return to. Would I be excited to go back and put the shoes on the character again? Going and doing the press tour with that group of people again? I always ask myself those questions again. It starts with the story and character.” Marvel and DC’s cinematic universes are continuing to expand, with both having planted flags going into 2019 and beyond, but many of the heroes have already been cast. There are some upcoming films without their lead heroes such as Inhumans, Shazam, and Green Lantern, though perhaps McConaughey could be courted for a villain role, having previously been in talks for the role of Randall Flagg in The Stand.

This is pretty interesting news. Now to be fair this doesn't anything simply becuase I'm pretty sure Marvel and DC have talked to every actor in Hollywood to see if they would be apart of their respective universes. However I actually think this could be a real possibility down the line. I honestly don't know who or what I want McConaughey could play. I think he has an outside shot to play Green Lantern and that would bring a lot of respect to the character after the 2011 disaster. I would love to see McConaughey in a comic book film I just don't know what he'll be in.

Speaking of Matthew McConaughey he has a new co-star. Variety is reporting that three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn, Blue Valentine) will join Matthew McConaughey and Edgar Ramirez in TWC-Dimension’s mining drama Gold, inspired by the true story about the 1993 Bre-X Mineral Corporation mining scandal wherein large amounts of gold were reportedly discovered in the Indonesian jungle. Directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana), Gold stars McConaughey as a failing businessman and prospector that teams up with a luckless geologist/explorer played by Ramirez. The duo heads into the Indonesian jungle on the trail of undiscovered gold. Williams will play McConaughey’s wife in the film. Written by Patrick Massett & John Zinman, Gold is being produced and financed by Black Bear Pictures. Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation Game) will produce alongside Hwy61’s Michael Nozik (Quiz Show, Syriana), Massett, Zinman and McConaughey. Williams will next star in director Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester-by-the-Sea opposite Kyle Chandler and Casey Affleck.

This is really great casting. As I have said before there is nothing wrong with casting Oscar caliber talent in your films and this is one of those talents. From the moment I heard about the film, it immediately peaked my interest. The cast in the film is amazing, you have a really talented director and the story has Oscar-bait written all over it and I cannot wait to see the film.

It’s been a few years since we last had a solid update on the status of the proposed Goon sequel, planned to continue the world of the 2011 comedy hit starring Sean William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Alison Pill, Live Schrieber and Eugene Levy. Today, The Hollywood Reporter bring some exciting news about the project, confirming that Baruchel himself will be helming the project, marking his directorial debut. The sequel, now titled Goon: Last of the Enforcers, will enter production this June in Toronto. Scott is confirmed to reprise his role Doug “The Thug” Glatt for the sequel, scripted by Baruchel and Jesse Chabot. The plot sees Glatt’s team, the Halifax Highlanders, bringing on a new team of players in the midst of a professional hockey player strike. Baruchel, best known for voicing Hiccup in the hit How to Train Your Dragon franchise, can be seen coming up in Cameron Crowe’s Aloha, hitting theaters May 29. He also stars on the new FXX comedy series, “Man Seeking Woman,” which was recently picked up for a second season.  No Trace Camping’s Jeff Arkuss, David Gross and Jesse Shapira are producing Goon: Last of the Enforcers alongside Caramel Films’ André Rouleau. Evan Goldberg will executive produce.

This is great news to hear. I really enjoyed Goon and it helps that I am a hockey fan. The first film is vastly underrated and if you haven't seen it then please check it out at your earliest convenience (and by that I mean now).  I think this is great Jay Baruchel to star his directing career with and I think this film has a lot of potential to be better than the first film.

It was just a few years back that director Brad Peyton, fresh off the box office success of his second feature film, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, signed on to develop a feature film based on DC Comics’ intergalactic antihero, Lobo. Word even followed that the film, to be produced by Joel Silver, looked like it was going to star Journey‘s Dwayne Johnson as the Main Man. Although Johnson and Peyton did reteam, their second project together became this month’s disaster actioner San Andreas instead. Meanwhile, the big screen DC Universe was officially revealed last October without a Czarnian in sight. “I think what’s happening with DC is that they have prioritized what they need to make first in order to kind of lay the foundations for the DC Universe,” Peyton told ComingSoon.net this weekend at the San Andreas junket. “This is what I believe is happening just from what they’ve been taking about. They’re talking about ‘Justice League,’ ‘Batman v Superman,’ and going into ‘Flash,’ ‘Wonder Woman,’ and ‘Aquaman’. Those are kind of the pillars of that universe.” Unfortunately for the project, it sounds like Lobo was put on the back burner at the studio, despite having a completed screenplay. “It’s one of those things where, creatively, you and I get it, but there’s a lot of people that don’t quite get that,” Peyton said when asked if the success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy helped bolster the chances of a film based on a similarly comedically irreverent space-traveling comic book character. “It’s a real uphill battle to talk people into spending a lot of money to do things correctly… I was really happy with the script, [though]. I talked with Dwayne about it. Joel Silver and I had a really amazing meeting about it. I did a rewrite of the script and was really, really excited for it. In their estimation, though, he wasn’t one of those main guys… That’s fair enough. I think that, to do any kind of comic book universe correctly, you do need to establish, ‘Here’s the tone. Here’s the main people.’ Then we can grow offshoots from there. With Marvel, they’re now doing smaller characters like ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. They obviously had to start, though, with their big guns and set up ‘The Avengers’. I kind of feel like that’s where DC is now. They’re setting that team up.” Does that mean that Lobo could return somewhere down the line? Peyton seems optimistic at the prospect. “I think there’s going to be a really amazing time for ‘Lobo’ and I think people are going to realize, certainly once they revisit it, what they’re sitting on,” he says. “But you never know. I’m really happy with the project and where we got it and fingers crossed it comes to fruition at some point.”

I really love these comments. This is a guy that gets the business of comic book films. He understands that DC can't just start off with a Lobo film without establishing the universe the way they want it to. I honestly think this film will happen, but not for a while possibly late 2019 as DC doesn't have anything scheduled after Justice League Part 2 in June of 2019. Now Lobo could appear in another DC film or possibly in one of the DC tv shows like Arrow, The Flash or Supergirl. The big question is who will play Lobo now that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is going to play Black Adam in the Shazam movie. I would love to see a Lobo film, but I know that now is not the time for it.
