5-18-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Universal and Legendary Pictures (via Wired) have released the first official images from the upcoming big screen adaptation, Warcraft, which features your first official look at Robert Kazinsky as the orc Ogrim. “We were looking for someone who would be able to perform the gruffness, the humor, and the toughness of this character,” director Duncan Jones tells the outlet. “We’ve gone beyond the point where these are just creatures in movies. “We now have the technology and the ability to make new characters entirely.” Legendary’s Warcraft is a 3D epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based upon Blizzard Entertainment’s globally-renowned universe. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), the film was written by Charles Leavitt with a rewrite by Duncan Jones. The film, a Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production, is produced by Charles Roven, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Alex Gartner. Stuart Fenegan, Jillian Share, Brent O’Connor, and Blizzard Entertainment’s Michael Morhaime and Paul Sams serve as executive producers. Rob Pardo and Blizzard Entertainment’s Chris Metzen and Nick Carpenter co‐produce with Atlas’s Rebecca Steel Roven. Fighting for The Alliance, Warcraft features Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn, Travis Fimmel as Anduin Lothar, Ben Foster as Medivh, Ben Schnetzer as Khadgar, and Ruth Negga as Lady Taria, and on the side of The Horde is also Clancy Brown as Blackhand, Toby Kebbel as Durotan, and Daniel Wu as Gul’Dan, with Paula Patton’s Garona caught in the middle. Warcraft is set to debut in theaters on June 10, 2016.

This is a really amazing image. Now I want to say that eventhough I'm a huge gamer, I've not played that much of World of Warcraft so I honestly can't bring a great perspective on it. I will say that the image looks amazing  and while it's just an image I think this gives us a pretty good idea at what type of film we are getting. Like I said I'm not a huge fan of the game, but I am really looking forward to the film simply because this is the film that can prove video game movies can be successful.

Production continues on Warner Bros. Pictures’ next DC Comics film, director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Some new set videos from the production have debuted online, two of which feature Jared Leto’s Joker emerging from a purple Lamborghini with a “HAHAHA” license plate and confronting Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness, Focus) as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Easy Money) as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus) as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney (Divergent, The Water Diviner) as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina, upcoming Pan) as Enchantress. Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El DIablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Jared Leto as the Joker. There’s also mystery roles for Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack, and Common. Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the Suicide Squad team has included countless DC villains among its ranks, including Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Bane, Killer Frost, Poison Ivy, Count Vertigo, Deathstroke, and Harley Quinn. The CW’s “Arrow” introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team. Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad is setting up shop in Toronto, Canada at their Pinewood extension. The film will shoot from now until September for an August 5, 2016 release.

This was a great video. Now I want to say that I'm sorry for not posting the videos, but Warner Bros. took them down and they have the right to and I'm sorry I couldn't show them tonight. I did get to see both of them earlier before they were taken down and I'll say that they were both pretty awesome. From  what I could tell it was a flashback sequence that has been heavily rumored. It looked as if Harleen Quinzel (this was her name before going to Harley Quinn) chasing after The Joker and after she shoots someone who was planning to attack The Joker. I think this is where it shows The Joker finally trusting her and brings her along for the ride. I also really love the licence plate as well. I loved both videos and I'm really looking forward to the film.

It was revealed last month that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) are writing Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming big screen take on DC Comics’ fastest man alive. Although it was already revealed that The Flash, set for release March 23, 2018, will star Ezra Miller as Central City’s scarlet speedster, Lord announced during The Hippojuice Podcast (via /Film), that The Perks of Being a Wallflower star will likely be playing a new iteration of Barry Allen as opposed to one of the other men who have, in the comics, appeared as the hero. “We’re trying to break a story,” says Lord. “It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright. …I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen. …We’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… iI really is its own thing and is kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff. I’m optimistic!” Miller is expected to also appear as Allen in Justice League Part One and, although unconfirmed, could even make a debut in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

I really like these comments. They continue to go along with what we've heard all along from DC in the fact that the movies and tv shows will be separate. I don't however like the fact that this version of The Flash is going to be Barry Allen. I think they should go with the Wally West version or Jay Garrick that way you don't confuse the general movie going audience. I'm really looking forward to what Lord and Miller do with the character and I'm looking forward to the film.

Sales are starting to flow at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with the news that Open Road Films has won a bidding war to distribute the Miles Teller boxing drama Bleed for This, telling the story of boxer Vinny Paz, picking it up for a reported $4 million. The boxer, born Vincenzo Pazienza and known as the “Pazmanian Devil,” became world champion in multiple weight classes, but after winning the Jr. Middleweight World title, he was in a serious accident that left him with a broken neck, leaving him paralyzed. He was told he would never walk again, let alone fight, but he kept working out and a little over a year after the car crash returned to the ring and won a match against Luis Santana. The boxing comeback story is directed by Ben Younger (Boiler Room) and co-stars Katey Sagal, Amanda Clayton and Aaron Eckhart as Vinny’s trainer Kevin Rooney. The film was produced by Younger with Bruce Cohen, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Chad Verdi and Noah Kraft with Martin Scorsese, Myles Nestel and Lisa Wilson as executive producers.

This is great news to hear. I'm always glad to see a film get picked up by a studio because it shows that all of the hard work is finally getting a shot to get showcased. Look I love my boxing movies and I've been looking forward to this film for a really long time and the story and cast is spectacular and I think he can be a sleeper Oscar contender this year if it does get it's release this year.

Speaking today with ShockTillYouDrop.com, producer Brad Fuller has begun to pull back the curtain of secrecy surrounding the next big screen Friday the 13th sequel, set for a May 13, 2016 release. Although the project was previously rumored to embrace a “found footage” aesthetic, Fuller explains that plans have now changed. “That was a road that we went down and tried to figure out,” Fuller tells STYD. “Ultimately, I think Michael, Drew and I felt that we couldn’t figure that out, so we kind of jettisoned that whole notion and we had to start over. We’re in the latter phases of that starting over and hopefully we’re getting a script in the next month or two, and we’ll go back to Crystal Lake.”  One of the more popular entries in the slasher genre, the first Friday the 13th was released in 1980 and followed a series of brutal murders of teen counselors at Camp Crystal Lake. The killer was ultimately revealed to be Pamela Voorhees, a mother whose son, Jason, drowned in the lake years earlier due to the negligence of the camp’s staff. As the cinematic series progressed, Jason himself became the franchise’s iconic hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding killer. The Friday the 13th franchise currently consists of ten original “solo” films, the 2003 crossover Freddy vs. Jason, and, most recently, the 2009 reboot. There was also a short-lived television series that, despite its title, was unconnected to the plot of the film franchise. Set to be directed by V/H/S helmer David Bruckner, the new Friday the 13th will feature a screenplay by “Hannibal” co-producer Nick Antosca. “At the end of the day, those movies are so fantastic because Jason Voorhees is such a dynamic presence and people love to see him do what he does well,” Fuller continues. “We hope to put Jason in a situation where he’s able to do that again, and it doesn’t feel like you’re seeing the same thing over and over.” Michael Bay and Andrew Form are also producing the new film through their Platinum Dunes, which also produced the 2009 film.

I'm really glad to hear this news. As a lot of you know I'm not a huge fan of the found footage genre and I am a fan of Friday the 13th so hearing that it won't be a found footage film gives me some relief. This is a very good franchise and I think that it can do just fine without being a found footage film. I'm not a big fan of it being released on Friday the 13th is so stupid, but as a fan of the franchise I am looking forward to it.
