Weekend Movie News 5-1-15 to 5-3-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

As production continues on Warner Bros. next DC Comics film, director David Ayer has assembled the super villain team for our first official Suicide Squad cast photo. Among those featured are Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness, Focus) as Deadshot; Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Easy Money) as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus) as Harley Quinn; Jai Courtney (Divergent, The Water Diviner) as Captain Boomerang; Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina, upcoming Pan) as Enchantress; Karen Fukuhara as Katana; Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc; Jay Hernandez as El DIablo; and Adam Beach as Slipknot. Missing from the photo are Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack, and Common in addition to Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and Jared Leto’s previously released Joker and you can check out the image below. !Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, the Suicide Squad team has included countless DC villains among its ranks, including Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Bane, Killer Frost, Poison Ivy, Count Vertigo, Deathstroke, and Harley Quinn. The CW’s “Arrow” introduced their own version of the team in the most recent season of the series and the recent animated film, Batman: Assault on Arkham, offered another version of the team. Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad is setting up shop in Toronto, Canada at their Pinewood extension. The film will shoot from until September for an August 5, 2016 release.

This photo looks absolutely amazing. All of the characters look pretty darn close to their comic book counterparts and I think that bodes well for the film. The one standout is clearly  Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc because he looks just his character in the video game Batman: Arkham Origins and I enjoy that look. The one thing I will complain about is the blue in Harley Quinn's hair, but I'm pretty sure that will change once she leaves the Suicide Squad and teams up with Jared Leto's Joker.

Although it was revealed nearly a year ago that Chronicle director Josh Trank would be helming the second Star Wars Anthology film, word has just broken that Trank will not be visiting a galaxy far, far away. The film he was attached to, however, remains in development at Lucasfilm and a new helmer is expected to be announced soon. “After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path,” says an official statement from Trank. “I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans. I want to thank my friends Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, Simon Kinberg, and everyone at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all.” “It was a privilege to collaborate with Josh,” says Lucasfilm VP of Development Kiri Hart. “We are grateful for the energy and love of ‘Star Wars’ that he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best.” Many fans anticipated a disturbance in the Force last month during the Star Wars Celebration when Trank did not take the stage alongside Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One helmer Gareth Edwards as was originally planned. Trank’s next film is 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four, hitting theaters on August 7.

This is pretty interesting and puzzling news. Now when it was announced that Trank wasn't going to appear at Star Wars Celebration I knew something else was up because it would've been a perfect time to give some hints about the film and get people excited for the Anthology film. There have been a lot of rumors going around that Trank was pretty difficult to work with on the set of Fantastic Four (a film he directed) and that the people at Disney (mainly Kathleen Kennedy) didn't want to fool with him anymore. Now everything is just a rumor and it's highly doubtful that we'll ever find out the real reason he left or fired. I trust Disney that they'll get the right man for the job, but I'm disappointed that he won't get to see whatever his vision of a Star Wars film would be.

Lionsgate has announced that their upcoming big screen reboot of the classic TV series “Power Rangers” has been delayed from July 22, 2016 until January 13, 2017. Screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) will script the upcoming reboot of Power Rangers, which is described as a modern reinvention of the long-running franchise. In it, a group of ordinary high school kids find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world. Project Almanac‘s Dean Israelite is in talks to helm the big screen adaptation, which will see original creator Haim Saban acting as producer along with Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur.

I'm not shocked about this news. Roberto Orci was supposed to produce the film and then he left so that he could go work on Star Trek 3 (he was signed on to direct) and then he was canned from that film and we still have no idea if that reopens it to him coming back on board with the film. With the drama and the recent short film of Power Rangers that was released I think Lionsgate decided that they need to take their time with the movie. Hopefully we can get some more news soon because I'm a big Power Rangers fan and I want this film to be good.

Production continues on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and following the set photos of Megan Fox in her best Britney Spears disguise, producer Michael Bay has released our first official look at “Arrow” star Stephen Amell as the sports-themed vigilante Casey Jones and you can check it out below. Megan Fox leads the cast of the sequel that also includes Will Arnett as Vernon Fenwick and William Fichtner as Eric Sacks. Newcomers to the franchise also include Tyler Perry as scientist Baxter Stockman, Brian Tee as the new Shredder, and Laura Linney in an undisclosed role. Though they remain uncast, it was recently confirmed that villains Bebop and Rocksteady will appear in the sequel as well. The original film, which grossed more than $485 million at the worldwide box office, also starred Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, Noel Fisher, Danny Woodburn, Johnny Knoxville and Tony Shalhoub, although their involvement has not yet been confirmed for the sequel. Set to be directed by Earth to Echo‘s David Green, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is set for release on June 3, 2016.

I really love this picture. It keeps to the core roots of who Casey Jones is in both the comics, animated television show and the original trilogy of films in the early 90's. I'm a big fan of Stephen Amell and he is doing a fantastic job on Arrow (which you all should watch) and I think he is going to kill this role and he will be the best part of the film.

Video games rarely get a fair trade when it comes to their movie adaptations, maybe because there have been so so SO many bad video game adaptations over the years. Ubisoft has created an incredible video game franchise with their Assassin’s Creed games, taking open world technology back in time for a series of historical action-adventures. Most of the games feature a bartender named Desmond Miles who has a long bloodline of assassins in his family that allows him to travel back in time using something called an Animus to document those times for Abstergo Industries. He isn’t given much of a choice in the matter. Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the film division of the company, has been developing the games into a film for 20th Century Fox, starring Michael Fassbender, and as luck would have it, ComingSoon.net spoke with Fassbender earlier today for his upcoming Western Slow West, and we wanted to learn more about the long-in-development Assassin’s Creed movie, for which he’ll be reuniting with director Justin Kurrzel and Marion Cotillard from their yet-to-be-scheduled Macbeth adaptation. “You say it’s a long time but what I’ve found–it’s all new to me but starting to develop scripts and work on them, they take time,” he countered to our mention of the delays in getting the movie made. “It just takes time to get a good story together and we really want to do it right. It’s exciting. It’s going to start this year, we’ll be filming in September.” Fassbender was incredibly coy on which character or characters he might be playing, since the games have such a vast array of stories and characters on which to focus. It’s been stated previously that he will play Desmond Miles, but that may not be entirely the case. “You don’t know that. Don’t listen to what they tell you, that’s the first rule,” he said with a smile. When asked about trying to figure out which games and time periods to base the first film on, all he would say was, “That’s always the challenge of something that’s so dense, to really find something and pare it down and basically, there are so many elements to it, so trying to translate that to an audience, you have to pick key things. So yes, that is part of it, getting through the density of it and paring down and engaging a simple story.”

I really love these comments. I always say that I'm a fan of when actors are passionate about a film or a role and they really want to due the property justice and Michael Fassbender is doing that with this film. The film has had numerous release dates (one date being three weeks from now), but now it's slated for Christmas 2016 and starting in September is a great idea and it gives everyone enough time to make the film great. I' have a love hate relationship with the franchise as of late, but I'm looking forward to the film.
