Weekend Movie News 2-20-15 to 2-22-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder surprised the internet today with a first look at Jason Momoa as Aquaman! Snyder included the following with the photo: There is only one true King. #unitetheseven The former “Game of Thrones” star is set to first appear as the character in the March 25, 2016 release, then will star in Justice League Part One in 2017, followed by the solo Aquaman movie in 2018.

Jason Momoa as Aquaman

This is an amazing photo. People have always made fun of Aquaman for his powers (or lack thereof), but I've been saying that a film version would be awesome to see especially after playing Injustice: Gods Among Us and reading part of the new 52 Aquaman comic series and this photo confirms everything I've been saying. I think Jason Mamoa is the perfect person to play the character and I cannot wait to see how he does in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Next year will see not only the world’s finest superheroes throwing down in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but also the wildest villains of the DCU making their way to the big screen in Suicide Squad. Among them will be Jared Leto as The Joker, making him the first actor to take on the character in a film since Heath Ledger’s performance in 2008’s The Dark Knight. Speaking with Billboard, Leto opened up about this opportunity, with some very choice words to describe The Joker. “The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character — that’s what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?” Leto says. “[He’s] this beautiful disaster of a character — what a big challenge.” The outlet also reports that Leto is gaining weight for the role, quoting him as saying, “Do you mind if I eat a little? I’m trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours — and I’m terrible at eating a lot.” Though Leto himself makes no mention of this as preparation for his role as the clown prince of crime, it’s still an interesting note. Leto has previously had dramatic weight loss and gain for roles in films including losing 40 lbs for his Oscar-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club and gaining 67 lbs for the role of Mark David Chapman in Chapter 27, which resulted in Leto contracting gout. Leto joins a cast that includes two-time Academy Award nominee Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness, Focus) as Deadshot; Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Easy Money) as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus) as Harley Quinn; Jai Courtney (Divergent, The Water Diviner) as Captain Boomerang; Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina, upcoming Pan) as Enchantress; and two-time Oscar nominee Viola Davis (The Help, Prisoners) as Amanda Waller. Written and directed by Fury and End of Watch‘s David Ayer, Suicide Squad is setting up shop in Toronto, Canada at their Pinewood extension, starting this month. Following two months of pre-production, the film will shoot from April until September for an August 5, 2016 release.

These are some great comments. Everything that Jared Leto said about The Joker is correct in the sense that he does have a Shakespearean side to him. I'm curious to see why Leto is gaining wait for the character, but it is probably going to mostly be muscle. Jared Leto was my choice from the beginning and I cannot wait to see him take on this iconic character.

With Bryan Singer going full-throttle on pre-production for X-Men: Apocalypse it only seems appropriate that we get confirmation straight from the horse’s mouth that Peter Maximoff, AKA Quicksilver, AKA everyone’s favorite part of X-Men: Days of Future Past, will return for the prequel/sequel. Thanks to I Am Rogue, we have actor Evan Peters doing just that. “I think so, yes,” Peters says of Quicksilver taking part in the festivities. “I assume it as well, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to say and not supposed to say. I haven’t seen a script.” It’s okay that he hasn’t seen a script since the screenwriter of X-Men: Apocalypse, Simon Kinberg, already more-or-less confirmed last summer that the lightning-fast speedster would make his triumphant return to the fold. Regarding whether all the stars have lined up for the busy actor’s schedule, Peters says, “No. We’ll see. I think… I don’t know what I can say and what I can’t say. All I can say is that I have not seen a script yet.”

There’s a lot of potential for the character in the 1980’s era the new film is set in, which should see the beginnings of Charles Xavier’s School for the Gifted. That could include both Peter and his little sister Wanda (AKA The Scarlett Witch), who was elementary school age in X-Men: Days of Future Past. After playing a key role in the rescue of Magneto, Peter will likely have a high-ranking position within the core X-Men, as he did during the mid-’90s “Age of Apocalypse” storyline where he led a splinter group of mutants including Storm, Dazzler, Banshee, Iceman, and Exodus during the evacuation of humanity to Europe. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult will lead the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse, which will also see the return of Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert and newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Kodi Smit-McPhee as young versions of Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops and Nightcrawler. The film is being written by Simon Kinberg from a treatment by Mike Dougherty, Dan Harris and Kinberg. Said to be the conclusion of a trilogy started with X-Men: First Class and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past, cameras will start rolling on the next adventure in Montreal beginning in April. X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 27, 2016.

This is great news to hear. The article is rigth in saying that Quicksilver was everyone's favorite part of X-Men: Days of Future Past and him coming back for X-Men: Apocalypse is exciting. Evan Peters did an amazing job with the character and Aaron-Taylor Johnson (who plays Quciksilver in The Avengers; Age of Ultron) has a lot of catching up to do and maybe his performance as the character might be better than Peter's.

One of the bigger headlines from earlier this year was the announcement that Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm are eyeing Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt to potentially replace Harrison Ford as the headlining star of the Indiana Jones franchise! Today, Deadline offers an update, suggesting that Steven Spielberg himself is interested in directing the fifth big screen installment in the life of Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. Although the most recent big screen adventure, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was not entirely a hit with critics, the fourth film in the series managed to gross more than $786 million worldwide when it was released in 2008. Shortly thereafter, George Lucas hinted that plans were underway for a fifth cinematic adventure, but he admitted that he had yet to decide on a MacGuffin (A term popularized by Alfred Hitchcock, referring to a narrative element that drives the story forward, such as the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark). Following the sale of Lucasfilm to Walt Disney Pictures and Lucas’ own subsequent retirement, however, hints regarding plans for the future of the franchise have been few and far between. Ford, however, has suggested that he’s quite eager to reprise the role himself, despite turning 73 this year. Spielberg is said to have himself selected Pratt to headline Jurassic World, so, while there’s currently no script in place for a fifth Indiana Jones adventure, one may very well be on the way in the not too distant future!

As much as I love Stephen Spielberg he doesn't need to direct the new Indiana Jones movie. He's already passed on the Jurassic Park franchise to Colin Trevorrow and I think he needs to do the same for this franchise. As for the Chris Pratt rumor I think he would fit in well with the franchise but to me he seems to be more like Nathan Drake (the Uncharted franchise), but if he gets the part I won't have any complaints. I'm a huge fan of the Indiana Jones franchise and I really hope we see a new film here soon.

None of the winners (aka losers) surprise me. The one thing that I don't get is why Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas won a lot especially against other horrible movies like Left Behind and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Don't get me wrong the film is terrible, but didn't think needed to get these awards. I was also glad to see Ben Affleck to get the redeemer award because he has turned his career around and has become a force to be reckoned with.
