2-3-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have released the new trailer and poster for Minions and you can check them both out below. Arriving on the big screen July 10, 2015, this Despicable Me spinoff begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters–from T-Rex to Napoleon–the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression. But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he–alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob–ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind… from annihilation. Featuring a soundtrack of hit music from the ’60s, Minions is produced by Illuminatio’’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, and is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Brian Lynch has written the screenplay for the 3D-CG comedy adventure, and Chris Renaud serves as executive producer of the film.

Minions

This was a great trailer. It wasn't as funny as the first trailer, but it still gave us some more footage and showed us what this film is going to be about. It also gave us our first look at Sandra Bullock's Scarlett Overkill. I absolutely loved the first two Despicable Me films and one of the things I loved was the Minions and giving them their own film is an amazing idea.

Although we’re still more than ten months away from the release of the hotly-anticipated “saga” entry Star Wars: The Force Awakens, casting is already underway on Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm Ltd.’s first Star Wars spinoff feature, set to be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards. Today, The Hollywood Reporter brings an exciting update that suggests that Academy Award-nominated actress Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) is in talks to star! Although the mysterious Star Wars film has been rumored to follow a heist involving the theft of the Death Star plans, few official details regarding Edwards’ film have been made available. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Jones’ name connected to the project, however. A recent report suggested that the actress was auditioning against the likes of Rooney Mara and Tatiana Maslany.  This news arrives just one week after the project added Academy Award nominee Chris Weitz to work on the screenplay, rewriting an initial draft by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli, After Earth). The film, still without an official title, is set for release on December 16, 2016. Check back for more updates from a galaxy far, far away as they develop.

If true then this is great casting. Felicity Jones just recently became a Academy Award nominated actress and putting her in a Star Wars film is a great idea. Everything I have heard about this film sounds amazing and I'm just excited to see what it will be about.

The first poster has just arrived for the upcoming Magic Mike sequel, Magic Mike XXL. Check out the full design below! Returning stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias will be joined by newcomers Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games franchise), Donald Glover (“Community”), Amber Heard (The Rum Diary), Andie MacDowell (Footloose), Jada Pinkett Smith (“Gotham”) and Michael Strahan (“Live with Kelly and Michael”) with Emmy Award winner Gregory Jacobs (Behind the Candelabra), who served as a producer on Magic Mike, directing and producing. Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach, and with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight with them. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways. Magic Mike XXL also reunites Magic Mike producers Nick Wechsler, Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, with a screenplay by Carolin. Soderbergh, who directed the first film, will executive produce. Look for the sequel in theaters Wednesday, July 1, 2015.

Magic Mike XXL

This is a pretty good poster. I will admit that the first Magic Mike film (though not targeted for me) was actually a pretty decent film. It helped start the resurgence of Matthew McConaughey and it showed that Channing Tatum could somewhat act. I'm actually kind of sad that McConaughey isn't returning and Stephen Soderbergh (director of the first film) isn't directing the film either, but I still think this film will be alright and will do well at the box office.

Warner Bros. pictures has adjusted their upcoming schedule, delaying director Ericson Core’s Point Break remake nearly five months, moving the film from its planned July 31 date to December 25, 2015. The Rocky spinoff Creed, meanwhile, is set for this Thanksgiving weekend, opening in theaters November 25. Starring Ray Winstone, Teresa Palmer, Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bracey, the new take on Point Break is set in the world of international extreme sports and, like the original, involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring. Creed, meanwhile, will follow the grandson of Apollo Creed with Sylvester Stallone set to reprise his Rocky Balboa role, acting as the younger Creed’s reluctant trainer. The elder Creed, played by Carl Weathers, appeared in the first four Rocky films until a fight with Ivan Drago in Rocky IV led to his death in the ring. The November date has Creed opening opposite Disney•Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special and Jonathan Levine’s still-untitled holiday comedy starring Anthony Mackie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Lizzy Caplan. That’s also just five days after the opening of The Hunger Games‘ grand finale, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. Point Break enters an equally crowded Christmas weekend, opening opposite Paramount’s hybrid CGI/Live action family film Monster Trucks, David O. Russell’s Jennifer Lawrence-led biopic Joy, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman followup The Revenant and Concussion, the true football drama starring Will Smith.

These are both really interesting release dates. First for Point Break this was a great move simply because it was going to get crushed by Mission Impossible 5 (which just moved from Christmas Day to July 31st) and now it stand somewhat of a chance on Christmas Day, but I feel that this should be a summer movie and I honestly don't know how to feel about it. As for Creed this is a pretty risky release. I say that because it is going to have to follow The Hunger Games: MockingJay Part 2 and it will be coming out the day before Thanksgiving. It will be great counter-programming for The Good Dinosaur and The Martian, but I just don't know how it will fare.

Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim, “Sons of Anarchy”) has taken a leading role in director James Gray’s The Lost City of Z opposite previously-announced stars Sienna Miller (Foxcatcher, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) and Robert Pattinson (Rover, The Twilight Saga). He’ll play Col. Percival Fawcett in the adaptation of author David Grann’s best-selling book. The Lost City of Z follows Hunnam’s Fawcett, a British colonial who disappeared in the 1920s while searching for a mythical city in the Amazon jungles of Brazil that he believed he discovered on a prior expedition. Hunnam is currently in production on the Warner Bros. epic Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur from director Guy Ritchie, in which he plays the title role. He will next be seen in Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak and the sequel to Legendary’s Pacific Rim. Hunnam recently wrapped his starring role as Jax Teller in FX’s Sons of Anarchy, the highest rated drama in the network’s 20 year history. MICA Entertainment has come on board to finance the film with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner producing via Plan B Entertainment along with Dale Johnson and Anthony Katagas. Marc Butan is executive producing as are MICA Entertainment’s Julie B. May and Glenn Murray. Sierra/Affinity is continuing international sales of the title at this year’s European Film Market. CAA represents the domestic rights to the film. Production on the film is slated to commence during the summer of 2015.

This is pretty great casting. charlie Hunnam has the potential to be a big-time movie star and now that Sons of Anarchy is over he will have a little free time in his schedule. The film also sounds really interesting and I think that it is right up Hunnam;s alley and I cannot wait to check it out.
