2-2-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

After learning last week that Alexandra Shipp will play Storm, Sophie Turner will play Jean Grey, and Tye Sheridan will play Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse, we now have confirmation that Rose Byrne will reprise her role of Moira MacTaggert from X-Men: First Class. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Apocalypse” writer and producer Simon Kinberg says that MacTaggert is “a significant character in the movie. We ended First Class with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them.” He adds that there will be further developments between Professor Charles Xavier and Byrne’s character. “It’s certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class, and would like to mine more in this one.” Kinberg reiterated that “Apocalypse” “is the completion of the first arcs of Charles, Eric, Raven, and Hank, who are essentially our main characters. They’re such young actors and young characters, so there’s a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie.” Also, with the movie being set in the 1980s, can we see characters like Dazzler? “Could happen,” Kinberg laughed. “We’re certainly looking at mutants that would fit into the period.” Byrne is also joining James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac and Nicholas Hoult in X-Men: Apocalypse, coming to theaters on  May 27, 2016.

This is great news. Rose Byrne is such a talented actress and her coming back to the franchise is a great thing. I kind of missed seeing in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but I understand why she wasn't in the in the film. This woman can act and I think bringing her back is good for her and she can only help elevate the film.

We got our first look at the Fantastic Four teaser trailer this week and screenwriter Simon Kinberg addressed the question whether those characters could ever crossover with the “X-Men” franchise. “The reboot of FanFour really needed to work in and of itself. We were doing something pretty radical with the tone of the movie. If we wanted to find a way to connect them to the X-Men, we could. There’s a lot of precedent from the comics.”

These are the most obvious comments ever. Now I do agree with what he said about how the films are different tones and that for right now they won't cross. But I honestly think that these franchises will crossover by 2020. It's inevitable and Fox is trying to copy Marvel. Anyway I'm looking forward to the reboot and I hope it proves everyone wrong.

Tyrese Gibson, the musician and actor set to make his fourth big screen The Fast and the Furious franchise appearance in this summer’s Furious 7 has, according to a story at Deadline, today signed on to lead the Universal Pictures actioner Desert Eagle. Gibson himself wrote the original spec script alongside Mike Le. Desert Eagle will star Gibson as a border patrol agent who, alongside his partner, seeks to take down a deadly drug cartel that has itself up within a casino on a Native American reservation. “As far as roles, I want to do a real character piece,” Gibson told ComingSoon.net a few years ago. “I want to do a role where I get to play someone. That way I get to remove all my own instincts and habits and just completely submerge myself in the role… I’m really looking to try and step up and make people realize that I do have a little more in me than they probably would have guessed.” Le is best known for scripting the upcoming Patient Zero, currently in the works at Screen Greems with Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”) and Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”) both attached to headline. Newcomers Josh Campbell and Matthew Stuecken have been brought into rewrite Gibson and Le’s original draft. Gibson is also attached to executive produce Desert Eagle through his Voltron Filmz. Scott Stuber will, meanwhile, produce through his own Bluegrass Films.

This is pretty great casting. Tyrese Gibson is a talented actor and I'm glad to see him finally lead a film of his own. The film however sounds a little safe as we've seen Tyrese play the same type of character in a couple of other films. I will say that it sounds interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Image Entertainment announced today its acquisition of all U.S. rights to the upcoming horror comedy Burying the Ex from renowned director Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling). Written by Alan Trezza (“Sanctuary”), Burying the Ex stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Fright Night), Ashley Greene (The Twilight Saga) and Alexandra Daddario (“True Detective,” Texas Chainsaw). The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, is expected to be released in theaters and on VOD in the summer of 2015. Burying the Ex follows Max (Yelchin), an all-around nice guy, and his overbearing but incredibly beautiful girlfriend, Evelyn (Greene). Their relationship takes a nosedive after they decide to move in together and Evelyn turns out to be a controlling, manipulative nightmare. Max realizes it’s time to call it quits, but there’s just one problem: he’s too afraid to break up with her. Fate steps in when Evelyn is involved in a freak accident and dies, leaving Max single and ready to mingle. Several weeks later, he has a chance encounter with Olivia (Daddario), a cute and spirited girl who just might be his soul mate. But that same night, Evelyn returns from the grave as a dirt-smeared Zombie and she’s determined to live happily ever after with Max. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with legendary filmmaker Joe Dante,” says Mark Ward, RLJ Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Acquisitions for the Image brands. “He brings a unique vision and style to ‘Burying the Ex’. We are confident that his fans and the genre community will embrace the film.” Burying the Ex is produced by Mary Cybriwsky, Carl Effenson, David Johnson, Frankie Lindquist, Kyle Tekiela and Alan Trezza. The deal was negotiated by Mark Ward on behalf of RLJE/Image Entertainment and Cassian Elwes, CAA and Voltage Pictures on behalf of the filmmakers.

This film sounds really great. Joe Dante is a master horror/comedy director and this film is right up his alley. I also really like the cast that the film has especially Yelchin who is very underrated and I think this film will really show what he can do. It's going to be a silly film and hopefully it can be just as good Dante's other films.

Relativity’s upcoming family science fiction adventure Out of this World (which locked Hector and the Search for Happiness director Peter Chelsom last August) has, according to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, set Ender’s Game and Hugo star Asa Butterfield to headline. Scripted by Allan Loeb (The Dilemma, Rock of Ages), Out of this World follows a boy named Gardner (Butterfield), who has been raised on Mars by a team of scientists. Returning to Earth as a teen, Gardner winds up traveling across the United States on a road trip with a young woman to find his biological father. Butterfield, also well known for his leading role in mark Herman’s powerful World War II drama The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, is next slated to star opposite Eva Green in Tim Burton’s upcoming adaptation of Ransom Rigg’s Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars, set for release on March 4, 2016. Ryan Kavanaugh and Richard B. Lewis will produce Out of this World with Loeb executive producing alongside Sasha Harrari, Steven Pearl and Tucker Tooley.

This is great casting. Asa Butterfield is a very talented actor and while he has been hit and miss over his career he's been more good than bad. The film also sounds really interesting and I think that he could pull this off and I cannot wait to see the film.
