2-9-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures have released the Red Band trailer for Straight Outta Compton featuring an intro by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, as well as the new poster for the August 14 release and you can check them both out below! In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war. Starring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, Straight Outta Compton is directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off, The Italian Job). The drama is produced by original N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who are joined by fellow producers Matt Alvarez and Tomica Woods-Wright. Will Packer serves as executive producer of the film alongside Gray.

Straight Outta Compton

This was a really great trailer. It gave us a great look at what kind of story we're going to ne getting. I was a little worried about the casting of Ice Cube's son playing him and after seeing this trailer I'm all on board for it. The intro before the trailer I felt was unnecessary. Overall though I was looking forward to the film before, but now I'm even more excited for the film.

2016 will be a big year for 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men” franchise as they have three films slated for release with Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse and Gambit, but lest we forget there is a third “Wolverine” film also in the cards. Not only is Hugh Jackman looking to reprise the role of Weapon X, but Patrick Stewart could be coming along for the ride. “What I’m very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together,” Stewart told Oregon Live. “Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of ‘X-Men’ from the four movies that I’ve already done.” Stewart also went on to contradict an earlier report on his co-star Ian McKellen by saying he will in fact appear in “Apocalypse”: “Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it.” X-Men: Apocalypse is set for release on May 26, 2016 and will feature the return of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Rose Byrne with newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, and Tye Sheridan. Wolverine 3 is set for release on March 3, 2017 featuring a script by David James Kelly and directed by James Mangold.

I think this is great news. Patrick Stewart has done an amazing job as Professor Xavier and when he said he wouldn't be returning I was a little sad, but to hear this gets me really excited for another Wolverine film. There are so many different ways they can go with a story between Xavier and Wolverine and I'm just looking forward to the film. As for the McKellen news I honestly don't know how you can have him without Stewart in the same film. Don't get me wrong I'm excited for McKellen, but I want to see him with Stewart in an X-Men film.

While there has not been an official announcement from Universal Pictures, it was revealed at a “Fifty Shades First” fan screening on Friday that the sequels to the Fifty Shades of Grey movie will be made. Stars Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, director Sam Taylor-Johnson and author E L James were in attendance at the screening, where fans learned that Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed are indeed coming as well. The studio is no doubt confident after seeing high tracking numbers for Fifty Shades of Grey, which is easily expected to win at the box office over the Valentine’s Day & Presidents’ Day weekend. In related news, the studio has brought online two more TV spots for the first film, co-starring Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty), Luke Grimes (Taken 2), Victor Rasuk (Godzilla, “Stalker”), Eloise Mumford (In the Blood), Max Martini (Pacific Rim), Rita Ora (Southpaw), Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Into the Wild) and Callum Keith Rennie (Memento). A global phenomenon, “Fifty Shades of Grey” was first published in 2011 and follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Dornan) and college student Anastasia Steele (Johnson). Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” (2011) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (2012) explore the couple’s deepening relationship. The trilogy has been translated in over 50 languages worldwide since its release. To date, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever. The film was recently rated R by the MPAA for “strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and for language.”

This is not surprising news whatsoever. So far the first film has went beyond expectations before the film has even come out and making the other two books is a no-brainer. Look I'm not excited for the first film to come this weekend, but I have to give credit to the marketing team at Universal for perfectly marketing this film.

Plans for another Halloween film are coming into focus today as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (whose credits include the latter four films in the Saw Franchise) have been hired to “recalibrate” the franchise. The trade uses that term, specifically eschewing the terms “remake,” “reboot” and “re-imagining”. ShockTillYouDrop got an update from producer Malek Akkad (Moustapha Akkad’s son), who hinted that plans were then underway for a new approach to the successful series. “We’re working on eleven as we speak,” said Akkad. “We’re working on a script right now. A new draft – perfect timing – is supposed to hit the day before Halloween. Hopefully my Halloween night reading will be a good read.” The last entry in the Halloween series -– Rob Zombie’s Halloween II -– hit theaters in 2009 and grossed nearly $40 million worldwide ($33 million domestically). Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer were brought in at one time to tackle Halloween 3D, however, Dimension Films and Trancas International opted to go in another direction.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this. On one hand I'm ok with another Halloween film, but I'm not really on board with the writers becuase the Saw films that they wrote were the worst of the films of the franchise. Look I want Halloween to succeed, but I just really good writers taking on the project.

With his latest, the Clint Eastwood-helmed American Sniper, proving itself to be somewhat of a box office juggernaut, leading man Bradley Cooper is looking to reteam with Warner Bros. Pictures on another project. According to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, the four-time Academy Award nominee is potentially planning to headline Orphan X, the big screen adaptation of the upcoming novel by Gregg Hurwitz. Set for publication next year, the book is described by the trade as follows: The thriller centers on a man named Evan Smoak. He’s called a “Nowhere Man,” and he helps others, sometimes through violent means. A job draws him into a world of human slavery, engineered by a detective of the Los Angeles Police Department. Cooper, who also starred last year in Serena and Guardians of the Galaxy, is soon headed back to Camp Firewood for the Netflix original series “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.” He’s also headlining Cameron Crowe’s latest, the recently-titled Aloha, opposite Emma Stone, John Krasinski, Alec Baldwin, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray and Danny McBride. Hurwitz himself plans to adapt the novel for the screen with Cooper producing alongside his three-time The Hangover helmer, Todd Phillips. Jesse Ehrman and Julia Spiro will, meanwhile, oversee for Warner Bros.

This is a really great casting choice. Bradley Cooper is a 3-time Academy Award nominee and putting him in this type of film is great for his career. Right now he is making the right choices for his career and anything he is in I will give a shot to simply because of his stature in the business today. The film sounds interesting and I cannot wait to see how Cooper and the film do.
