2-5-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

If you didn’t get enough new footage from the action ensemble sequel with this past Sunday’s Furious 7 Super Bowl spot, we’ve got a treat for you! In the player below, you can check out the new trailer for the highly-anticipated Furious 7! Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel (Guardians of the Galaxy, Riddick), Paul Walker (Brick Mansions, Takers) and Dwayne Johnson (Hercules, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) lead the returning cast of Furious 7. James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring) directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar, Machete), Jordana Brewster (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, “Dallas”), Tyrese Gibson (Transformers, Death Race), Chris “Ludacris” Bridges (New Year’s Eve, No Strings Attached), Elsa Pataky (Where the Road Meets the Sun, Snakes on a Plane) and Lucas Black (Jarhead, Friday Night Lights). The April 3, 2015 release also features Jason Statham (The Transporter, Snatch), Tony Jaa (Ong-Bak, The Protector), Kurt Russell (The Art of the Steal, The Hateful Eight), Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones,” “Hollyoaks”), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy, How to Train Your Dragon 2), John Brotherton (The Conjuring, Help for the Holidays) and a cameo by Iggy Azaela. Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel and Michael Fottrell return to produce Furious 7, which features a screenplay Chris Morgan.

This was a great trailer. It showed a lot of stuff that we've already seen, but it also added in a few new things. The trailer really got me excited for the film more than I already was. I'm looking forward to the film for various different reasons, but mostly because I want to see how they handle Paul Walker's tragic death in the film.

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for their upcoming comedy sequel, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and you can check it out below. In this sequel, Kevin James reprises the role of security guard Paul Blart and heads to Las Vegas to attend a Security Guard Expo with his teenage daughter Maya (Raini Rodriguez) before she departs for college. While at the convention, he inadvertently discovers a heist – and it’s up to Blart to apprehend the criminals. Also starring Molly Shannon, David Henrie, Eduardo Verastegui, Nicholas Turturro, Gary Valentine and Neal McDonough, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 is directed by Andy Fickman and features a screenplay by James and Nick Bakay. Look for it in theaters on April 17, 2015.

This was a decent trailer. It pretty much repeated the first trailer and showed a few new things, but it did its job and it made me laugh quite a bit. I really enjoyed the first film for what it was worth and I'm really curious to see how this one pans out and hopefully the movie wasn't spoiled by the trailers.

20th Century Fox and MGM have released the trailer and poster for Poltergeist, opening in theaters on July 24, 2015 and you can check both out below. Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead, The Grudge) and director Gil Kenan (Monster House) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever. Written by David Lindsay-Abaire, Poltergeist boasts an impressive cast, including Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, Saxon Sharbino, and Jane Adams, along with 8-year-old Kennedi Clements as Madison, a play on the iconic Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) from the original. Fox and MGM have also teamed up with DiedinHouse.com to uncover the secrets buried in homes across the US. Died In House instantly searches millions of records to determine if a death has occurred at that location.  At the end of the Poltergeist trailer, you will receive an exclusive promo code. Those who visit DiedinHouse.com will be able to enter the code to learn the truth about their home.

Poltergeist

This was a pretty decent trailer. It didn't really scare me, but there were some pretty chilling moments. I love the cast that they have assembled and I feel that no matter how bad the script might be the cast will help carry it along. Like I said yesterday I'm not a huge fan of the Poltergeist franchise, but I think that this film will be ok and I can't wait to see it.

The Hollywood Reporter has our first look at the historical comedy Elvis & Nixon, starring two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) and Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon (Man of Steel).  Elvis & Nixon follows two men at the height of their powers, conscious they could not stay on top forever, both ripped with fear of the inevitable, sharing one famous private moment in the Oval office. The film recounts the morning of December 21st 1970, when the King of Rock’ n Roll (Shannon) showed up on the White House lawn to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Richard Nixon (Spacey). He had a very urgent request: to be sworn in as an undercover Federal Agent at large. This intimate moment in the Oval office between two men at the height of their powers has never been told. Co-starring Evan Peters, Alex Pettyfer, Colin Hanks, Johnny Knoxville, Tracy Letts and singer Sky Ferreira, Elvis & Nixon is directed by Liza Johnson (Hateship Loveship) from a screenplay by Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal and actor Cary Elwes, best known for The Princess Bride.

I really like this picture. When you have a film with two heavyweight talents like Spacey and Shannon are on-screen togehter you're destined to have an amazing film.  I feel that these two figures are the perfect roles for these two tremendous actors and the film sounds interesting as well. It sort of has that Oscar bait feel to it, but I am really looking forward to the film.

In various stages of development for quite some time, plans for a live-action adaptation of the anime classic Robotech appear to once again be moving forward. Deadline today brings word that the property is now being developed by Hollywood Gang Productions, the Warner Bros.-based company responsible for films like Immortals and both 300 and its recent sequel 300: Rise of an Empire. Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari will produce with 300 and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra‘s Michael Gordon set to provide the screenplay. What’s more, the outlet claims that they’re keen on signing Mama helmer Andy Muschietti to direct. “Robotech” debuted in the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Productions. A peculiar science fiction amalgamation, the show re-edited and re-wrote the dialogue of three Japanese anime series (“The Super Dimension Fortress Macross,” “Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross” and “Genesis Climber MOSPEADA”) to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series. A sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

This is pretty interesting news to hear. Now granted I've never really seen any episodes of the show or for that matter never even heard of the show. But I'm a little surprised by the news. I say that becuase anime tv shows turned live-action films haven't panned out so well and I figured a studio would at least wait and see how Ghost in the Shell does before green-lighting any other anime projects. It does raise a little concern, but there are so many more smart people out in the world that know what they are doing with this property and may be they have faith in. All I know is we just have to wait and see.
