Weekend Movie News 2-13-15 to 2-15-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

The first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak has just arrived, offering a first look at the director’s gothic horror story starring Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, Alice in Wonderland), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, A Most Violent Year), Tom Hiddleston (Marvel’s The Avengers, Only Lovers Left Alive), Charlie Hunnam (“Sons of Anarchy,” Pacific Rim) and Jim Beaver and you can check it out below. Directed by Del Toro, the man responsible for films like Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone, and written by both Del Toro and Matthew Robbins, Crimson Peak is a co-production between Legendary and Universal Pictures. Set in the aftermath of a family tragedy, the filmfollows an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers. Crimson Peak is produced by Del Toro, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Callum Greene with Jillian Share serving as executive producer. Look for it to hit both 2D theaters and IMAX beginning October 16.

This was a pretty great trailer. Guillermo del Toro is know  for creating some creepy creature and really intense horror film (just look at Pan's Labyrinth) and this film looks to be his best yet. The cast that he has assembled is amazing and the story sounds really interesting. I'm really exicted for this film and I cannot wait to see it.

Word first broke last month that, due to scheduling conflicts, Tom Hardy would no longer be playing Rick Flagg in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Jake Gyllenhaal was said to have been offered the part shortly thereafter, but the Nightcrawler actor subsequently passed on the role. Now, TheWrap reports that the studio may have found their man in RoboCop star Joel Kinnaman. According to the outlet, Kinnaman is not yet a lock, but he is the current favorite. Written and directed by Fury and End of Watch‘s David Ayer, Suicide Squad is set to star Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The film will hit theaters on August 5, 2016. Kinnaman is also well known for headlining Daniel Espinosa’s 2010 Swedish actioner Easy Money and for starring on the crime drama series “The Killing.” His upcoming projects include Espinosa’s Child 44 (in which he stars opposite Hardy), Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups, and Jaume Collet-Serra’s latest Liam Neeson teaming, Run All Night. Originally created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru back in 1959, Suicide Squad‘s film adaptation will set up shop in Toronto, Canada at their Pinewood extension starting this month. Following two months of pre-production, the film will shoot from April until September for a August 5, 2016 release.

If this true then this is pretty great casting. Joel Kinneman is great actor who hasn't been in much, but he has the talent to be a big-time star in Hollywood. I think he has the talent and the look to play Rick Flagg. With the movie coming out next year we will find out soon who will replace Tom Hardy and if it is Kinneman then I'll be pretty pleased eventhough I really want Jon Bernthal for the part.

Those who have been chomping at the bit for a moviebased on Ubisoft’s hugely popular Assassin’s Creed video game franchise can start getting excited, because the movie is coming together with another name announced to join Michael Fassbender in the long-awaited adaptation. Deadline is reporting that Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard has signed on to join the film in an undisclosed role, which will not only reunite her with Fassbender from their upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, but also with that film’s director, Australia’s Justin Kurzel. Like Fassbender, her role will span multiple movies within the franchise if the first movie does well, and it continues her run of big-budget action movies following her role as Talia in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Production will begin on the collaborative project between Ubisoft and New Regency Pictures this fall in time to make 20th Century Fox’s release date of December 21, 2016. Frank Marshall, Arnon Milchan, Jean-Julien Baronnet, Conor McCaughan, Fassbender and Pat Crowley are producing from a the script by Bill Collage, Adam Cooper and Michael Lesslie. The article also mentions that Regency and Ubisoft are trying to get a Splinter Cell movie going with Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) directing and starring Tom Hardy.  Cotillard will be at the Oscars a week from Sunday, having been nominated for her role in Two Days, One Night, so maybe someone on the red carpet will try to get more information about her role in Assassin’s Creed out of her then.

If this true then this is amazing casting. Marion Cotillard is an Academy Award winning actress and I think that she could fit in well with this film and universe. It's also a no-brainer to have her in the film simply because of Fassbender. They are going to be in Macbeth later this year and since Fassbender is producing he must of really liked working with her and wants to do it again. I;m a huge fan of the Assassin's Creed franchise and i have been waiting for a film for a long time and I hope that the film gets made.

The Merc with a Mouth has scored a mixed martial artist. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Gina Carano, the MMA champion-turned-actress, has scored a role in the director Tim Miller’s much-anticipated X-Men spinoff, Deadpool. According to the trade, Carano will play Angel Dust, a little known mutant whose ability allows her to elevate her adrenaline levels to provide her with super strength. A member of the underground band of mutants who call themselves Morlocks, Angel Dust has barely appeared in the comics outside of a 2002 “Morlocks” miniseries written by Geoff Johns (who is now much better known for his work with the Distinguished Competition). Carano joins Ryan Reynolds, T.J. Miller and Ed Skrein in the film, which is also still trying to lock its female lead. Carano is best known for playing the lead in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire and has also appeared in films like Furious 6 and In the Blood. Featuring a script from the Zombieland pair of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Deadpool is less than a year away from theaters! Production is slated to begin in Vancouver next month with the film coming to the big screen on February 12, 2016.

This is really interesting casting. I'm going to go ahead and agree with everyone in Hollywood and that is that Gina Carano cannot act worth a crap. Listen she's a tremendous fighter, but the only way she can work in a film is if she barely has any lines and with her playing Angel Dust she probably won';t be talking much in the film anyway, but the character does fit her style so expect to see a lot of fight scenes from her in the film. As I've said before I've been looking forward to this film for a really long time and I am glad it is finally happening.

Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe plays a father on an epic quest to find his missing sons in a new trailer for his directorial debut The Water Diviner and you check it out along with a new poster below. Starring Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind) and Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion, Quantum of Solace), The Water Diviner is an epic adventure set four years after the devastating battle of Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Australian farmer Connor (Crowe) travels to Istanbul to discover the fate of his sons, reported missing in the action, where he forges a relationship with the beautiful Turkish woman (Kurylenko) who owns the hotel in which he stays. Holding on to hope, and with the help of a Turkish Officer, Connor embarks on a journey across the country to find the truth about the fate of his sons. Directed by Crowe (Gladiator, Noah), the film also stars Ryan Corr, Jai Courtney, Yilmaz Erdogan, Cem Yilmaz and Steve Bastoni. Warner Bros. will give The Water Diviner a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on April 24.

This was a really great trailer. It's pretty awesome to see Russell Crowe behind the camera for the very first time (he has worked with a few great directors so he's been taught well). The film looks remarkable and this could be an Oscar contender next year. I honestly feel that the film should be pushed back so it can be right in the hunt for Oscars, but it could be trying to do what The Grand Budapest Hotel did by coming out early and trying to carry momentum all the way to next January when the nominations are announces. Like I said before the film looks amazing and I cannot wait to see it.
