Special Movie News Edition: Spider-Man joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe

If you have not heard, late last night Sony Pictures struck a deal with Marvel Studios to allow Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This has been speculated for years upon years and to know that the web-slinging superhero is home. These rumors picked up a lot of steam from the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did not do as well as Sony thought it would and the Sony hacks which revealed a lot of secret information that led many to believe that the company would come crashing down. All I can say is bravo to Kevin Feige (president of Marvel Studios) for getting this deal done because this has been one of the biggest things the fans have asked for and we are finally getting what we have always wanted. With that being said there is a lot of information that needs to be talked about and let’s dive right into it...

The first thing that should be talked about is the deal itself and here are the details released from both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. A new Spider-Man will first appear in a currently-unspecified Marvel film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of the Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web-slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films. This pretty much sums up the entire deal. Sony will produce every solo film and Marvel will produce the MCU films and Sony will have creative control over Spider-Man. Now I personally think that Marvel will end up having the final say about the character simply because his stories have to fit into the entire MCU and the plan moving forward. The financial aspect of the whole deal doesn't really concern me simply because I am just glad that Spider-Man will be in the MCU.

The second item on the docket is how this effects the entire MCU schedule itself. The new Spider-Man solo film will hit theaters on July 28th, 2017. With that this is the new schedule for the MCU.  Thor: Ragnarok will move to November 3, 2017 (from July 28). Black Panther, which previously held that spot, goes from November 3 date to July 6, 2018. That  bumps Captain Marvel to November 2, 2018 and moves Inhumans all the way to July 12, 2019. The two-part Avengers: Infinity War, meanwhile, remains set for release May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019. I think this is a great idea because you don't want to put competition up against yourself and it means that we won't get to see certain characters introduced for a while. Plus it means that we'll get a new Spider-Man film and actor (I'll get to that later) really soon.

Another thing that has been talked about is what film will Spider-Man appear in first and what will happen with the Sinister Six film, the female led film and the Venom. Well The Wall Street Journal reports that Spidey’s debut feature in the MCU will be in Captain America: Civil War, set for release on May 6, 2016. This makes perfect sense because Spider-Man is a key figure in the comic storyline and he needs to be in the film. A lot of people keep asking what will happen with Black Panther (who was supposed to take Spider-Man's place in the film) and I genuinely think that Black Panther will still be involved in the film and now they could possibly have one take Iron Man's side and one could take Captain America's side, but that's just me. As for the expanded Spider-Man universe The Sinister Six film has been put on the shelf for now, but the film is still coming it'll just take a revamping of the franchise to bring the film to life. I'm actually glad it's still happening simply because it's an interesting take on the group of supervillains and it still gives Drew Goddard a superhero movie to direct which he absolutely deserves.

Now we've finally come to the big elephant in the room and that it is who will play everyone's favorite spider. The rumor that has been going around is that Logan Lerman is the leading candidate for the role and I would be happy with that. He's a talented actor and he's super young (he's 23) to start a new franchise with. But I want everyone to be on the look out for these other 4 possible actors to play the part and I'll give reasons for each one...

Josh Hutcherson

This might be a great choice to play Peter Parker. He is the youngest one of the actors I'm going to mention  and Logan Lerman, he's got the acting chops and he's very recognizable with both female and male audiences alike. He could potentially bring in a whole new fanbase just because of who he is. Plus it doesn't hurt that he's a kid from Kentucky like myself.

Daniel Radcliffe

I know I may get a little heat for this, but he has the same qualities as Hutcherson. The problem with him is that by the time a new Spider-Man film comes around he'll be 27 years old (which makes him the oldest out of the list on here) and they do want a younger guy than Andrew Garfield to take the mantle, but don't count out Radcliffe. My thought on this however (and I mean no offense by this whatsoever) is that I don't think Sony/Marvel will want another British actor playing Spider-Man after having used one in the last two films. I think an American actor will take over the franchise.

Taron Egerton

His name has just recently been thrown around mainly because of what he was able to do in Kingsman (I'll get to see that this weekend) and from what I've seen he could work. My main concern is the same with Daniel Radcliffe in the fact that he is British. Like I said I hope no one takes offense to that, but that could be the reality and if not then I'll eat my words.

Dylan O'Brien

This would be an interesting choice. He is currently in the middle of his own franchise with The Maze Runner. I don't know if there could possibly scheduling conflicts with those films that could hurt his chances, but if not then I would not have a problem with him playing the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

This is a lot to take in at the current moment, but it's good to know that Spider-Man is coming home in some sort of way. He may not be officially moved in, but he's like the cousin who is vacationing with the relatives and who knows he may permanently move in down the road. All I can say is that I'm excited as can be and I cannot wait to see him in the MCU.

So ladies and gentlemen what are your thoughts on Spider-Man being apart of the MCU, are you excited, disappointed or on are you on the fences and who would you like to see play Peter Parker/Spider-Man? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
