My Review of It (2017)

So I recently watched It (2017) and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado.........

Seven young outcasts in Derry, Maine, are about to face their worst nightmare -- an ancient, shape-shifting evil that emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town's children. Banding together over the course of one horrifying summer, the friends must overcome their own personal fears to battle the murderous, bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise (played by Bill Skarsgard).

This film is absolutely everything you want to see in a horror film. It's a film that gives you some of the more haunting images you'll see this year and the build up to each scene is just so intense and that's attributed to the score of the film done masterfully by Benjamin Wallfisch. The book is one of the harder Stephen King books to adapt simply because of the length and because of how many little details appear here and there within the book, but this film was able to have a singular focus and really pay attention to certain details and leave the other for the second film. All of the performances are great and the cast of The Loser's Club all did a marvelous job and I would be shocked if none aren't big stars down the line. Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise was possibly the best decision the filmmakers could make after the departure of Will Poulter and the way that Skarsgard just commands the screen as Pennywise is both remarkable and haunting at the same time. Director Andy Muschietti directed the film Mama just a couple of years ago and that film wasn't as terrifying as what he was able to come up with in this film and you can see some of the same elements in Mama are in this film and it blended together nicely with the source material.

The only complaint with the film is that all of the scares were predictable, but some of the ways the scares were presented really made them more terrifying tan they should've been. The Georgie death scene (sorry spoilers) and the projection room scene are two scenes that really stick out as the most intense scenes within the film. Before going to see this film just to put this disclaimer out there that if you are easily scared then don't watch this film because it will give you nightmares and possible trauma later on down the line. The story of this film did a nice job of mainly focusing on the kids instead of flip-flopping back and forth between the kids and then them as adults as we got to see each character shine and each one had their individual moments and it really stayed as true to the nook as possible which makes the film even scarier once you've actually read the book. Overall this is a film that has redefined the horror genre and it is a film that has some predictable scares, but some of the images you see will be haunting for a long time and it's really exciting knowing we are getting a sequel and with this momentum, hopefully the sequel can be just as good. I give IT (2017) a 9.5 out of 10.
