My Review of Suicide Squad

So I recently watched Suicide Squad and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Figuring they're all expendable, a U.S. intelligence officer decides to assemble a team of dangerous, incarcerated supervillains for a top-secret mission. Now armed with government weapons, Deadshot (played by Will Smith), Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (played by Jai Courtney), Killer Croc (played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and other despicable inmates must learn to work together. Dubbed Task Force X, the criminals unite to battle a mysterious and powerful entity, while the diabolical Joker (played by Jared Leto) launches an evil agenda of his own.

This was a disappointing yet fun film to watch. It might be strange that you can have fun with a disappointing film, but in this case you can. The disappointing part about the film is the story which is generic and lackluster to the point of there being a lot of predictability and nothing just really gets you invested to the mission the Squad is on. Speaking of the mission, it's not really stated what it is and it doesn't let you get connected to the film in a way to even care about what is at stake if the mission fails. The film does move at a relatively fast pace and it seems that way due to the sloppy editing and the misplacement of a lot of scenes or for that matter adding a scene that was already shown either earlier in the film or in another most recent DC film (you can figure that one out). Another problem is the soundtrack and while all of the songs played in the film are great, most are used far too often and it makes the film feel like a really bad music video, You don't get much of an original score in the film and it doesn't allow the film to build any momentum or tension. One thing that did work really well was the comedy and every joke was perfectly timed, but some did fall flat and felt forced to where we as audience think we should laugh, but we're not for sure.

The visual effects were pretty good, but nothing spectacular and some looked exactly like a lot of things we've already seen in a ton of other comic book films. as for the acting, most of the cast was spot on and the performances were fantastic even if there was a little to work with. Will Smith is great as Deadshot and he brings the same charisma that we are used to seeing out of him. Margot Robbie was the perfect choice for Harley Quinn and she really captures the essence of the character from the Batman animated series. Jai Courtney shockingly gave a great performance and you see why Hollywood pushed him down our throats because there is a lot of potential for him if he can continue this momentum moving forward. Viola Davis knocked the role of Amanda Waller out of the park and it really felt like she was this heartless woman with an agenda. It would've been nice to have seen Oprah in the role after she was rumored for it, but Viola Davis was phenomenal. The real obvious thing everyone wants to know is how good Jared Leto is as The Joker and to be honest, he's actually quite good. Now the comparisons to Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson are going to be there and he really doesn't reach their levels, but he's actually more like Caesar Romero in the Batman tv series in the sense, he's more grounded, dirty and quite creepy. He's barely in the film, but when he's on screen he just commands it and is the center of attention and seeing him in more films down the line will be something special. Again there isn't anything special about the film and that includes the villain. Won't spoil it, but it's just too lame and obvious for it to make any sense. Overall this film just feels like you average superhero film with a bland story, but the characters are good enough for you to check out especially if you're a fan of the comics. I give Suicide Squad a 6 out of 10.
