8-16-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Another Justice Leaguer is set to appear in the upcoming The Flash movie! Variety is reporting that Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, who made his big screen debut in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is set to make an appearance alongside Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen. There’s no telling right now exactly how large a role Cyborg will play (or if he’ll be the only additional Justice Leaguer), but he’s the latest name to join a cast that also includes Kiersey Clemons as Iris West. Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is helming the DC Comics adaptation. Ezra Miller’s version of the Flash has already appeared on the big screen in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the recent Suicide Squad. Both Flash and Cyborg are also part of Zack Snyder’s upcoming Justice League cast. We’ll get to see both heroes in action alongside fellow Justice Leaguers Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Superman (Henry Cavill) when the film hits the big screen November 17, 2017. Cyborg made his first appearance in 1980’s “DC Comics Presents” #26. In the “New 52” continuity, he’s a high school athlete who, after getting caught in a S.T.A.R. Labs explosion, is given powerful bionic abilities that lead to him becoming a founding member of the Justice League. The Flash movie boasts an original treatment by The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It is currently without an official release date, although production is planned to start this year with a 2018 release date likely.

I think this is terrific news. Realistically it makes a lot of sense because whenever this movie comes out, our only exposure to him would be in the Justice League film and his solo film doesn't come out until 2020. So along with the Justice League part 2 coming out in 2019, why not go ahead and put him in another film with before his solo film and The Flash is perfect. Now I think it'll be a just a small cameo, but it will go a long way in letting us get to know him. Plus if Flash and Cyborg team up in the film at the end it would help The Flash win the fight easier. I'm just really excited to see Ray Fisher in the role and to see Cyborg on the big screen which is much deserved.

Word broke back in May that Walt Disney Pictures was potentially eyeing their 1989 animated hit for the live action treatment. Today, it seems that those plans are coming to fruition as Deadline reports that a live action Little Mermaid is, indeed, on the way. What’s more, the studio is pairing Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken to create a blend of old and new songs that will be featured in the upcoming big screen version. Disney’s animated The Little Mermaid made over $211 million at the box office and became a bestseller on home video, popularizing songs like “Under The Sea” and “Part of Your World.” Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s Danish fairy tale, it tells the story of a 16-year-old mermaid princess named Ariel who longs to be human. Universal Pictures and Working Title have also been in development on their own Little Mermaid project with Chloe Grace Moretz set to star and Rebecca Thomas directing from a screenplay by Richard Curtis. Miranda, who will also produce the live action Little Mermaid alongside Marc Platt, has a number of upcoming projects with Disney. He’s providing songs for this November’s animated adventure Moana (from original Little Mermaid directors John Musker and Ron Clements) and he’s part of the cast of the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns. Set to star Emily Blunt in the title role, the film will soon begin production in England for a December 25, 2018 release. The live action Little Mermaid joins a slate of upcoming live action Disney features that also includes Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book 2, Cruella, Maleficent 2, Dumbo, Mulan, Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio, Genies, Night on Bald Mountain and The Sword in the Stone. A live action Tinkerbell movie starring Reese Witherspoon is also in parallel development to a live action Peter Pan directed by Pete’s Dragon writer and director David Lowery.

I'm glad that this news is finally confirmed. It seemed pretty obvious this was going to get announced sometime soon and now is a perfect time. The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney films and to see a live action adaption is going to be something great. Just like a few other Disney films that are in Public Domain, there is another project just like it in the works so it'll be fun to see which one will be better than the other. For Disney, the casting choices are unlimited, but I could see Anna Kendrick as Ariel and maybe Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

Legendary Entertainment and The Pokémon Company have, according to a story today at Variety, found a writing pair for their upcoming live action Detective Pikachu movie in Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman. Hirsch is best known for creating the hit Disney XD series Gravity Falls while Perlman has been heavily involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since scripting 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy alongside James Gunn. Announced last month, the Detective Pikachu movie will mark the first ever Pokémon live-action film. The world first met Detective Pikachu through a video game in Japan, and further details of how his story will be told are being kept under wraps for the moment. The film will be fast-tracked for production start in 2017. The first Pokemon game debuted in Japan in 1996, before making its way to America in 1998. The series began as two titles for Nintendo‘s original Game Boy, which saw players tasked with catching and training all of the Pokemon (short for Pocket Monsters) to become the ultimate Pokemon Master. The franchise quickly evolved into an extensive library of video games, in addition to a popular trading card game, and an anime/film series. Over 279 million units have been sold since the series began, making it one of the best selling video game franchises in history. Nineteen animated Pokemon movies have been produced and distributed since 1998, though only five have played in theaters in the United States. Warner Bros. distributed the first three films, which brought in $85 million, $43 million, and $17 million as the domestic box office, respectively. Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live action film outside Japan as it has done with Legendary’s other films for years. The Pokémon Company’s long time movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan, as it had similarly done in its partnership with Legendary on the iconic monster reboot for Godzilla.

These are some excellent choices for this film. This film seems a little weird to be happening (to me anyway), but I kinda like the fact that it will be live-action. Really this film is all going to depend on who the live-action actors are to help Pikachu because they will make or break the film and of course the animation of Pikachu. They can tell a lot of different stories with this film and I'm very curious to see where they go with the film.

Paramount Pictures has released the full trailer for their upcoming alien movie Arrival, starring Amy Adams (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Jeremy Renner (The Avengers), Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Men in Black 3). Check out the Arrival trailer below. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario), the film is based on Ted Chiang’s 1998 novella Story of Your Life with a script with Eric Heisserer (The Thing (2011)). When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity. “This isn’t a graphic-novel universe or creating a new universe. This happens in our world today, as it exists,” Adams said previously of the grounded approach. “Not having to transport myself to a universe where superheroes exist, which is also fun, really helped me ground the character and the experience.” Jeremy Renner also stars in the film as a physicist, with the actor saying: “I haven’t played a smart nerdy guy. I thought there was a great challenge in that.” Renner also spoke about the film’s tone, saying it’s not like a “big Michael Bay alien movie” but instead compared it to the works of Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg. “If you’re a parent, it’s going to wreck you,” he said. “It’s big and there are thriller elements and tension, but it’s going to lean much more into a thinking person’s film.” Arrival will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 2 before debuting in theaters on November 11.

This was an amazing trailer. Denis Villeneuve has done some amazing work over the past three years and this looks to be another hit for him. This will be his first attempt at sci-fi, but it will give us an idea of how he will handle Blade Runner 2. The film pays omage to the classic sci-fi films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 2001: A Space Odyssey and you even get that from the article where Jeremy Renner mentions both Spielberg and Kubrick as inspirations for this film. I think this film is going to be a massive hit and eventhough it didn't make it in time my top 10 most anticipated for the second half of 2016, it is definitely a film I'll be checking out.

The cast of Walt Disney Pictures‘ upcoming Nutcracker movie continues to grow today as Variety brings word that two-time Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley is set to take on the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy. She joins a Nutcracker movie cast that also includes Mackenzie Foy as Clara in the film, Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer and American Ballet Theatre dancer Misty Copeland as the lead ballerina role for the film’s dance sequences. Titled The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, the film hails from director Lasse Hallstrom (My Life as a Dog, The Cider House Rules) and screenwriter Ashleigh Powell.  Most famously adapted as a ballet by Tchaikovsky in the late 19th century, the Nutcracker tale originated as a short story titled “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann in 1816. In it, a young girl’s dolls come to life on Christmas Eve alongside a noble nutcracker, who protects her from a villainous army of mice. There is no word on how much fidelity this new take will have to the original source material, although Powell reportedly spent two solid years developing the project.  Mark Gordon is producing the live-action The Nutcracker movie, with Lindy Goldstein executive producing. Technically, this new Nutcracker movie marks another live-action remake of a classic Disney animation, as a famous segment in 1940’s Fantasia was built around the ballet. More recent live-action attempts on adapting the story include George Balanchine’s 1993 The Nutcracker, featuring Macaulay Culkin, and 2009’s Nutcracker in 3D starring Elle Fanning, Nathan Lane and John Turturro. Keira Knightley can next be seen in David Frankel’s Collateral Beauty, starring opposite Will Smith and Edward Norton. Look for it to hit the big screen December 16.

I think this is a terrific addition to the cast. Now I know a lot of people hate Keira Knightley and there are some valid points with being that she seems really stuck-up and I can totally see. However she is a really great actress and putting her in just about anything is a great idea. I think she has the charisma for this film and she fits in well with the rest of the cast. As I've mentioned before, I'm not that familiar with the Nutcracker story, but I'm actually pretty interested in seeing how this film turns out.
