My Review of Pete's Dragon (1977)

With it's remake set to hit theaters this weekend, I thought it would be fitting to review the original film Pete's Dragon (1977). So without further ado...

A lighthouse keeper's (played by Mickey Rooney) daughter (played by Helen Reddy) befriends a runaway orphan (played by Sean Marshall) and his playmate, a great green dragon.

This is a really boring, but bright film. Out of all of the Disney films, this is easily the most boring film they have ever made mainly due to a lot of uninteresting characters. None of them really standout and they just all seem bland and unoriginal. The animation is actually quite nice although there is only one animated character in the film (Elliot the Dragon) and he is a little goofy and charming enough for you to care about him. It also suffers from an extremely long runtime of 134 minutes which is an eternity for an animated film and you lose interest in the film as a whole due to it dragging on for seemingly forever. Seeing such stars as Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons and Jim Dale is quite disappointing due to the lack of development for their characters and no direction for them to in to grow. The songs while good just aren't up to par with the major classic Disney songs in being timeless and the songs for the film are easily forgettable. There are some emotional moments that do get you somewhat hooked in, but some just are too over-the-top and there are a lot of good comedic moments that help keep your attention for a little while. Overall this film is bland and boring to the point where it is easily the most forgettable Disney film to date. I give Pete's Dragon a 1.5 out of 10.
