My Review of Pete's Dragon (2016)

So I recently watched Pete's Dragon and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Mr. Meacham (played by Robert Redford), a woodcarver, delights local children with stories of a mysterious dragon that lives deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. His daughter Grace (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) believes these are just tall tales, until she meets Pete (played by Oakes Fegley), a 10-year-old orphan who says he lives in the woods with a giant, friendly dragon. With help from a young girl named Natalie (played by Oona Laurence), Grace sets out to investigate if this fantastic claim can be true.

This is actually a really great film. Considering, that the original film didn't really have much going for it, this film didn't have much to live up to. It  updates the story accordingly to fit in with today's world, but it does have the feel of the first film to it, but not to the point where it overwhelms you. The story is pretty basic and predictable and the characters aren't that great becuase there is basically no buildup. But the standout of the film is the dragon himself which looks gorgeous on the big screen and the animation is just done so well that it makes it feel real. The film does a great job of cutting out a lot of unnecessary stuff from the first, film and it cuts down the runtime of the original film by 30 minutes, but it just feels rushed and you don't get to connect with any of the characters especially Pete and Elliott who you are there to basically see. They do play the emotional card a bit and surprisingly it works, because it just doesn't deal with things addressed in the film, but to the audience and some things they might go through. Overall this is sub-par effort for a Disney live-action film, but it didn't have to do much to live up to the original. I give Pete's Dragon (2016) a 6 out of 10.
