So I recently watched Ben-Hur (2016) and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...
Judah Ben-Hur (played by Jack Huston) loses everything after his adopted brother Messala (played by Toby Kebbell), now an officer in the Roman army, returns to Jerusalem and accuses the young prince of treason. Stripped of his title and separated from his wife (played by Nazanin Boniadi) and family, Ben-Hur must endure years of slavery on a galley at sea. When fate brings the estranged brothers to an epic and deadly chariot race, Ben-Hur finally gets the chance to exact vengeance on the man who destroyed his life.
This film is absolutely stupid. Look the first film is an all-time classic that is considered by many as one of the, if not the greatest film of all-time and this film just completely trashes that reputation. Literally everything done in this film is basically a shot-by-shot remake of the original film so there is no possible unexpected direction for this film to go. It's filled by CGI shot after CGI shot and it all just looks terrible and there's honestly no practical effects in the film. The chariot race is one of the most iconic scenes in film history and the one in the original film was phenomenal and there was a lot at stake for that scene due to the high risk involved. That same scene in this film is laughable and it doesn't even feel real. The performances aren't great, but they are good enough for you to at least keep you interested. Morgan Freeman is the most out-of place character in the film and that role should've gone to someone else besides him. Unlike the older film, this film had a clear marketing campaign it specifically targeted the faith-based crowd in hopes they would get a big audience. It's understandable why they did that, but the older film was made with good intentions, but it didn't target one type of audience and this film targets one audience will alienating the majority of the movie going audience. Overall this film is a complete borefest, with terrible effects, terrible, story, one directional marketing and some less than stellar performances. I give Ben-Hur (2016) a 1.5 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Ben-Hur (2016), what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
