Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...
This is an absolutely fantastic choice. Doug Liman is a phenomenal director and I think he is going to do great with this film. Justice League Dark is a film that has been in development for almost 10 years now and the fact that it is finally going to happen really excites me. These characters are characters that don't really get that much attention and it's going to be very interesting to see how the general audience is going to receive them after Suicide Squad virtually did the same thing. Hopefully this film can do the characters justice and get a good reception both financially and critically.
I really like this list of directors. They are all unique in their own way and have done a wider variety of films that makes them interesting for this particular film. If I had to personally choose I think I would have to go with Niki Caro simpley because it would make sense for Disney to bring her into a Marvel film after the success of Disney's Macfarland, USA. She's already under the umbrella so why not keep her there. Plus while this shouldn't always be the case, she is a female so directing a female led superhero film would be great although female directors shouldn't only direct those types of films. Marvel has a plan for everything and I believe that we'll have a great discussion on whoever gets chosen.
I'm glad this film is happening, but I'm not excited about the director. Robert Rodriguez is a great director, but here lately his films haven't been the greatest in the world and it makes me question why he was chosen. Had James Cameron had not been so dead set on making Avatar sequels and nothing else then he would've been the director for this film and it would've gotten me really excited to see the film. Now I'm having to sit here and just pray that it's a good film. The concept is so interesting and in the hands of another director I would feel comfortable about the film, but not with Rodriguez in the chair, but hopefully he can change that with a solid film.
This trailer sucked so bad. Look I love the first Ring film because it was something new and it took the world by storm, here they're doing the same old tricks and nothing looks new. They even virtually spoiled the entire film by taking you day by day of events that are going to happen to this woman and that she is virtually turning into the little girl. Why would you spoil that when that could've been a great twist, but it's ruined. I will say the plane scene looks cool, but nothing excited me about the film and I'm not looking forward to it.

After many months of no news and speculation that the project may be on ice, Variety reports the director Doug Liman has signed on to direct Warner Bros.’ Dark Universe movie, aka Justice League Dark. Liman is no stranger to comic book adaptations having brought us 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow (based on the graphic novel All You Need is Kill) and he has long been attached to 20th Century Fox’s Gambit film (The Hollywood Reporter brings word that he has now officially left that project). Fan-favorite director Guillermo del Toro fanned the flames of Justice League Dark for a long time despite no official announcement about the project ever being made. Rumors previously pointed toward Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, as playing Swamp Thing, with Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor reportedly in the mix for John Constantine, and another rumor also gained traction saying Rogue One: A Star Wars Story villain Ben Mendelsohn was being eyed for the film’s primary villain, Anton Arcane. No official release date or screenwriter for the film has ever been announced, but Warner Bros. has previously set release dates for Untitled DC movies on October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019. The Justice League Dark made their debut when DC Comics began The New 52 publishing initiative in 2011. A paranormal-leaning super team, the group featured the likes of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Frankenstein, Deadman, Madame Xanadu, and The Phantom Stranger among its ranks.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word of a director shortlist for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain Marvel. Among the names said to be up for the Captain Marvel director chair include Niki Caro (director of Whale Rider and Walt Disney Pictures’ McFarland, USA), Lesli Linka Glatter (primarily a director of television with episodes of The Walking Dead and Homeland under her belt), and Lorene Scafaria (director of The Meddler and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World). The trade notes that it may still be some time before Marvel makes a decision on who will finally helm the long-awaited movie. Little is known regarding Marvel’s specific plans for Captain Marvel outside of the fact that the film will feature the Carol Danvers version of the character, set to be played by Brie Larson. It was confirmed last year that a Captain Marvel cameo was, at one point, part of the script for Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained that the decision was ultimately made not to rush her appearance. It was also recently reported that Captain Marvel will make her debut in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War, which is set to begin production in November. Infinity War is scheduled to hit the big screen May 4, 2018, with its sequel following on May 3, 2019. Between those two films, however, is when the solo Captain Marvel film is scheduled to arrive, specifically on March 8, 2019. Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) are scripting the feature.

Twentieth Century Fox‘s long awaited manga adapatation Alita: Battle Angel has potentially found its next star as The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz has entered talks to play Doctor Dyson opposite leading lady Rosa Salazar. Dyson is a cybersurgeon who becomes a father figure to Salazar’s Alita. Set in the 26th century, Alita: Battle Angel tells the story of Alita, an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by Dyson. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. Within the context of an epic action-adventure, the film aims to explore a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and finding love. James Cameron had been developing the big screen adaptation for more than a decade, but now that he’s is in pre-production on four Avatar sequels, he has his hands a little full and has turned the Alita reins over to Sin City director Robert Rodriguez. “Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years,” Cameron said when the film was officially announced last year. “So I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel. He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.” Christoph Waltz starred earlier this year in David Yates’ The Legend of Tarzan and can be seen coming up in both Justin Chadwick’s 17th century drama Tulip Fever and in Alexander Payne’s sci-fi satire Downsizing.

On October 28, the beloved “Ring” horror franchise returns with Rings, directed by F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) from a script by David Loucka, Jacob Estes and Akiva Goldsman. Paramount Pictures has now debuted the first Rings trailer which you can view below. In Rings, a young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before… Rings stars Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan and Vincent D’Onofrio. The film is produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.
Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions have debuted the trailer for Manchester by the Sea, starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Lucas Hedges, Kyle Chandler, Gretchen Mol, and C.J. Wilson. Manchester by the Sea will open in theaters on November 18. In Manchester by the Sea, the latest film from award-winning writer and director Kenneth Lonergan, the life of a solitary Boston janitor is transformed when he returns to his hometown to take care of his teenage nephew. The story of the Chandlers, a working-class family living in a Massachusetts fishing village for generations, Manchester by the Sea is a deeply poignant, unexpectedly funny exploration of the power of familial love, community, sacrifice and hope. After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 15-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him. In his first film since 2011’s acclaimed Margaret, Lonergan once again proves himself a powerful and visionary storyteller as he seamlessly weaves past and present together, crafting a tension-filled tale that deftly eschews sentimentality in favor of penetrating emotional insight and deeply affecting human relationships.
I loved this trailer. It does give you just about every emotion possible and it all seems to work well. This film is receiving a lot of early Oscar buzz and I think it deserves. Casey Affleck just continues to get better and better as an actor and I would have to put him as my frontrunner for Best Actor and the goes for Michelle Williams as the frontrunner for Best Actress. Now I'm saying that without having seen the film, but if it's as good as this trailer, then we'll definitely see it rewarded come Oscar time.
