My Review of Cloverfield

With 10 Cloverfield Lane set to hit theaters this weekend, I thought it would be fitting to review it's predecessor Cloverfield. So without further ado...

As a group of New Yorkers (played by Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, Odette Yustman) enjoy a going-away party, little do they know that they will soon face the most terrifying night of their lives. A creature the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Using a handheld video camera, the friends record their struggle to survive as New York crumbles around them.

This is a brilliant film. One of the things that makes the film so great is the fact that at times it leads you down a familiar path of a lot of films, but in the end it comes in and takes you in a completely different direction. The acting is surprisingly good in the film and it's mainly due to veteran supporting actors TJ MIller and Lizzy Caplan. There is quite a bit of action in the film and it really fits in the film to where it's not overdone and over the top. One problem is the fact that every time there is trouble it always seems to follow the group everywhere they go and it just seems hokey and forced just to drive the plot along and you only get to see small glimpses of how it effects other people while the monster is attacking. Another problem is the fact that it is done in the style of found footage and there times where you can hardly tell what is going on because the camera is just going all over the place. The story is really fantastic and it's attributed to Drew Goddard who is just one of the best writers in the business and he proved what he could do with this film. Also any film would be nothing without a director and Matt Reeves who is a fantastic director and this might be his best film to date. Overall this film had a fantastic story and some great performances, but the cinematography is just to all over the place and there are just too many conveniences for the plot to advance. I give Cloverfield a 6.5 out of 10.
