3-3-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Sony Pictures has just revealed the first full Ghostbusters trailer! In the player above, you can take a look at Paul Feig’s new take on the franchise! “You can see it just in the two-and-a-half minutes,” said producer and original Ghostbusters helmer Ivan Reitman during a Q&A that followed the Ghostbusters trailer debut. “There’s something really special about these four together that makes this become what was so lovely about the first movie.” “It was really important for us to capture the hearts of what we loved so much about the original,” added screenwriter Katie Dippold “That was the most important thing. But there was also a call to bring something new so that it didn’t feel like just another reboot.” “I really have such a love for this property,” said director and co-writer Paul Feig, “and what I really wanted to do was to bring it for a new generation. To give a new generation their own team… I get pictures of young girls making the new Ghostbusters costume and putting it on and it really chokes me up. I just love the idea that a new generation is going to have their own [team] that they love as much as the original guys. It’s sheer love for the property that we did this… This is such an amazing franchise that had two amazing movies, but it could just keep going. There’s so many things you could do with it. It seemed terrible to just leave it in a box.”

I have to be really honest here and say that this was a terrible trailer. Now does that mean the movie will be terrible, no but sometimes trailers can give you a good indicator of what type of film you are getting. There was nothing really funny in the trailer and the jokes felt forced and just really childish. If you hadn't told me that this was a trailer for Ghostbusters, I would've said that it is just another generic trailer. I've been on the fence about the film, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it will build off of the previous two Ghostbuster films.

Word broke yesterday that Warner Bros. is in negotiations to distribute the film Bright from director David Ayer and starring Will Smith, an End of Watch-style cop drama set in a world where Orcs and Fairies live with humans. Buried in their story on the announcement, Variety revealed an interesting tidbit: Warner Bros. is eager to shoot the film this year so that they can retain Ayer and Smith for a Suicide Squad sequel to shoot in 2017. Currently the only DC films set for released in 2018, the potential release window for a movie shooting in 2017, are The Flash on March 23, 2018 and Aquaman on July 27, 2018. There is still time for a Suicide Squad sequel to take either of those release dates of come out later in the year, but check back here for more details as we learn them. Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness, Focus) as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, Easy Money) as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney (Divergent, The Water Diviner) as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina, Pan) as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El DIablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jared Leto as The Joker. There’s also mystery roles for Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack, and Common. Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.

This is really interesting news to hear. Now while hearing news of a sequel is not surprising, but it is surprising in the sense that a sequel is a possibility when the first film hasn't even come out yet. It isn't official yet and it probably won't be official until after Warner Bros. executives have seen the final version of the film and the opening weekend box office reports. I like how they are wanting to let Ayer film his other small project so that he and Will Smith can be in Suicide Squad 2. I'm eager to see Suicide Squad and the more and more I think about it, I want to put this film as a more anticipated film than Rogue One and once I see another trailer then I'll be a little more confident on my decision.

The Hoff is back! Dwayne Johnson took to his social channels tonight to announce that David Hasselhoff is joining the cast of Paramount Pictures‘ currently-filming Baywatch movie. Hasselhoff played L.A. County Lifeguard Mitch Buchannon in the “Baywatch” series. He produced “Baywatch” from the 1990s until 2001, when the series ended with “Baywatch Hawaii.” Also starring Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra and Hannibal Buress, Baywatch offers a big-screen take on the television series that originally premiered on NBC in 1989. The original Baywatch cast included David Hasselhoff, Parker Stevenson, Shawn Weatherly, Billy Warlock, Erika Eleniak, Peter Phelps, Brandon Call and Holly Gagnier. The series was initially not a success and was cancelled after a single season. Plans were made, however, to move Baywatch into first-run syndication and, in 1991, Baywatch returned to the airwaves where it continued for a full decade, bringing in new cast members like Yasmine Bleeth and Pamela Anderson. The show also received a short-lived spinoff, Baywatch Hawaii. Although several writers have been attached to the Baywatch movie, the most recent draft hails from the Friday the 13th pair of Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief director Seth Gordon is helming the new Baywatch film, which is being produced by Dwayne Johnson alongside Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Ivan Reitman and Douglas Schwartz.

This is great news to hear. One of the things that made Baywatch a show that people watched was due to the fact of David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. Anderson was in talks to be in the film, but it doesn't look likely, but getting Hasselhoff is key in the sense that it sorta brings the show and the movie to a full circle. I think this film has the chance to be either really campy or really funny to the point where it makes fun of itself subtly.

Lionsgate has just debuted, via EW, the first Power Rangers cast photo! You can check out the photo below. The film, now shooting in Vancouver, is a production of Lionsgate and Saban Brands. Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late. The Power Rangers cast includes Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, and Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect, The Hunger Games franchise) as Rita Repulsa. Directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), Power Rangers is written by John Gatins (Kong: Skull Island, Real Steel), Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula Untold), Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor), and Max Landis (Chronicle). Producers are Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars, The Maze Runner franchise). The new Power Rangers hits the big screen March 24, 2017.

I really love this photo. You all know that I am somewhat a fan of Power Rangers as I was more of a fan of the seasons that were in the 1990's more so than the 2000's series. I've been waiting for a more gritty version of the Power Rangers for quite awhile and I think this film has all the makings of showing why Power Rangers was one of the best shows to come out in the 1990's. Some people have poo pooed the idea of the film because they didn't grow up with it and I don't like because when you don't grow up with something then you can never really create a connection with something like I did with Power Rangers. Anyway as for the photo I love the looks of the characters and they look somewhat similar to the original cast other than the more diverse and not so racist character types in the original series. I think this film can be a big hit and it's got a great release date and I think this film can be a pretty big success.

“I am the Ghost of Christmas Present. Look upon me! You have never seen the like of me before!” That quote from Charles Dickens’ immortal classic “A Christmas Carol” is a bit ironic, as the 1843 story has seen nearly two dozen filmic adaptations since the advent of the medium, starting in 1901 all the way through the Jim Carrey/Robert Zemeckis performance capture version in 2009, with just as many done for television. Now, The Hollywood Reporter is acting as the Ghost of Christmas Future, having revealed yet another adaptation is in the works at Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures with two-time Oscar nominee Bennett Miller (Capote, Foxcatcher) attached to direct and Oscar winner Sir Tom Stoppard (Brazil, Shakespeare in Love) penning the screenplay adaptation.  Not much is known about this new version of A Christmas Carol other than it will be set in the 19th century, the same as the original story. Ellison and Miller will produce alongside Scott Rudin and Jennifer Fox. This will be Miller’s first directorial effort since 2014’s Foxcatcher, which was also made for Annapurna. Four-time Tony-winning playwright Stoppard’s next screenwriting effort is the period romantic drama Tulip Fever, starring Alicia Vikander, Cara Delevingne, Christoph Waltz. Although he is mostly known for writing historical epics (Empire of the Sun, Anna Karenina) Stoppard also has a history of doctoring Hollywood tentpole fantasies like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Sleepy Hollow and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

This is a pretty interesting choice. A Christmas Carol is one of the greatest stories to ever be told and it has deserved a chance to be seen in a few different versions with a new take each time and every adaption of the story has created it's own unique touch to the story and making it feel different from the rest. However it is a story that has been told over and over again and I don't know how people are going to treat the film. I love the inspired choice of Bennett Miller to direct as I think he'll bring a really dark and more haunting version of the story that we've never seen before. I think this is a film that can do good, but everyone knows the story and I don't know how it will do when people already know what to expect.
