3-31-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

It was two-and-a-half years ago that Warner Bros. officially announced Ben Affleck would be the new Batman in their then-Untitled Man of Steel sequel. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has since been released and all eyes are on the future of the DCU. So what’s next for Affleck’s Dark Knight? Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, William Morris Endeavor co-CEO (and Affleck’s agent) Patrick Whitesell revealed that currently there are two movies left on Affleck’s contract but that another could be on the horizon. “He’s contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape,” he says, adding, “there’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option.” Last summer, it was revealed that Affleck would co-write a solo Batman movie with comic scribe Geoff Johns with an eye toward directing it, though no further information on this film has been released since. It is interesting to note however, in contrast to the extensive contracts of Marvel Studios, that Affleck’s appearance in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad later this year doesn’t count toward his final tally. Production on Justice League: Part One is set to begin April 11 in London. Affleck will be joined by his fellow Justice League members Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Amber Heard is set to play Queen Mera in the film as well before moving to the solo Aquaman movie in 2018, with J.K. Simmons set to appear as Commissioner Gordon. The Zack Snyder-directed movie will debut in theaters on November 10, 2017.

I'm actually not surprised by this news. It makes sense for Ben Affleck to only be contracted for a limited amount of movies mainly due to his characters age in the film universe. By the time we get to a solo Batman film Ben Affleck will only be 46 or 47, but his Batman/Bruce Wayne will probably be 60 and Ben Affleck is directing a lot more and wanting to do other things in his career besides being Batman. Now if Warner Bros. can work it out with him where he can do DC film, then do an original film, then back to DC, then I think that would be ok, but it just depends on the other projects he is wanting to do. Plus I don't the wants to be like Robert Downey Jr. is by having to go through constant contract negotiations to where he ends up hurting both himself and the company. I want Ben Affleck to be Batman for at least another 10 years, but I would be fine if he only stuck around for another 4 and that would mark the second longest tenure from actor to play Batman only behind Christian Bale who played the character for 7 years.

Golden Globe winner Robin Wright is in final negotiations to join Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in Alcon Entertainment’s Blade Runner 2, it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. Director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) is directing. Principal photography is scheduled to begin July 2016. Blade Runner 2 will then be released by Warner Bros. in North America. Sony Pictures Releasing International will distribute in all overseas territories in all media. Blade Runner 2 (which has still not announced its official title) is set several decades after the 1982 original. Harrison Ford will reprise his iconic role as Rick Deckard. The film is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”. Story details, as well as Wright’s character, are not being revealed. Alcon Entertainment acquired the Blade Runner 2, television and ancillary franchise rights to the franchise in 2011 from the late producer Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic science-fiction thriller. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Johnson and Kosove. Bud Yorkin will receive producer credit. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers. Ridley Scott will also executive produce. Wright’s upcoming projects include next summer’s Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster). There, Wright will star alongside Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and Chris Pine (Star Trek). She can currently be seen on season four of Netflix‘s House of Cards, where she reprises her Golden Globe winning role as Claire Underwood.

I really love this casting. Robin Wright is a tremendous actress and she has proven that with he stint on House of Cards. I think she fits in well with the film and there a lot of different roles she can play. She could possibly be replacing Sean Young's character from the first film and for those that haven't seen the first film (which you should) runs off with Harrison Ford's character at the end of the first film. She could also play the head of the police force that Ryan Gosling could be working for as they try to find Rick Deckard. This is a film I am really looking forward to and I think it could be a tremendous film especially with everyone involved with the film.

The Tracking Board brings word that Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is preparing to dive into another world of monsters and mayhem with the long-developing Dungeons & Dragons movie adaptation at Warner Bros. Pictures. Letterman’s other feature films include Gulliver’s Travels, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Shark Tale. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis, Courtney Solomon and Allan Zeman of Sweetpea Entertainment, and Roy Lee (The LEGO Movie, How to Train Your Dragon) are attached as producers of the film, which features a script by David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2, Wrath of the Titans). There is currently no word yet on who will lead the film, though the outlet notes the producers are eyeing “a Vin Diesel-type” for the lead role. Dungeons & Dragons first became popular in 1974, and since then has amassed millions of players and fans worldwide. The hugely popular property has also influenced numerous writers, directors, game designers, and other creative professionals throughout its four decades. The feature was first announced in 2013 wherein a rights-dispute began between the studio and Hasbro (parent company of publisher Wizards of the Coast), but the issues were resolved last year and the film remains in-development. First adapted for the small screen as an animated television series in 1983, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson’s iconic role playing was turned into a feature film in 2000 with a live-action version directed by Courtney Solomon. The film was neither a critical nor financial success, but it did lead to a telefilm sequel with 2005’s Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God and a direct-to-DVD followup with Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness in 2012.

I really like this choice. I thought Letterman did a great job with Goosebumps despite a few story problems, but overall the film was a success. It's one of the reasons why I think he's a great choice for the film because he's already dealt with monsters when he did Goosebumps and he's already worked with a name brand property. Now I don't think he can do much worse than the last Dungeons & Dragons film that came out in 2000, but I think going in with very little expectations will help this film a lot and I think it can be a great success.

CBS Films and Lionsgate have announced that Golden Globe winner Kevin Bacon (Black Mass, Mystic River) has joined Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg (The Departed, Lone Survivor), Golden Globe winner John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane, Inside Llewyn Davis, Argo), Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Zootopia), Golden Globe nominee Michelle Monaghan (“True Detective,” Gone Baby Gone), Jimmy O. Yang (“Silicon Valley,” “Criminal Minds”), Vincent Curatola (“The Good Wife,” “The Sopranos”) and James Colby (“Limitless,” “Jessica Jones”) in Patriots Day. Patriots Day chronicles the events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. Bacon will play Special Agent in Charge, Richard DesLauriers, of the FBI. “Richard DesLauriers worked tirelessly as one of the key figures in an impossibly sophisticated investigation and Kevin Bacon possesses the intelligence and empathy to portray him,” commented Berg. The film will be directed by Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor) and produced by Scott Stuber, Mark Wahlberg, Hutch Parker, Dylan Clark, Stephen Levinson, Dorothy Aufiero and Michael Radutzky. Patriots Day will be co-financed by CBS Films and Lionsgate with the former handling production and marketing and the latter handling distribution.

I love this casting a lot more than I thought I would. Kevin Bacon is a really underrated actor and he has done great in just about everything he has been in and I think he is a perfect fit for this film. One of the reasons besides being a good actor, is the fact that once again he'll be doing a film set in Boston. Both Mystic River and Black Mass where set in Boston and both of those films turned out great, so hopefully this film can do the same. This is one of the many projects in the works about this tragic event in American history, but I think that this film can be the best although the other mainstream film about this is going to give this film a run for its money.

Walt Disney Pictures is developing a new live-action take on their classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs tale, adding a bit of a twist. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the studio is developing a Rose Red movie that relates the fairy tale from the perspective of the sister you didn’t realize Snow White had. Originally scripted by Justin Merz (The Boxcar Children), the Rose Red movie was initially unconnected to Disney’s Snow White. The history of the Rose Red character, after all, gets a little bit confusing. The Brothers Grimm tale “Snow White and Rose Red” is unconnected to the “Snow White” story, instead featuring a different character by the name of Snow White. This Snow White is a young girl with a sister, Rose Red, who, along with a friendly bear, face off against an evil dwarf. According to the trade, Evan Daugherty (who scripted Universal Pictures‘ Snow White and the Huntsman) pitched a concept whereby Merz’ Rose Red movie screenplay will be reworked to fit into the more traditional Snow White narrative. The film will follow Rose Red and the seven dwarfs as they work together to free Snow White from her curse. Tripp Vinson is set to produce the Rose Red movie through his Vinson Films. This isn’t the only fairy tale story that Vinson is bringing to the screen, either, as the banner is also developing the previously-announced Prince Charming movie as well as the Aladdin prequel, Genies. Tara Farney will executive produce the Rose Red movie with Merz and Adam Rodin co-producing.

Listen you all know how much I love Disney, but this is such a stupid idea. I get that they want to make live-action versions of their old animated fairy tales, but this is simply reaching too far. Why would you make a film about a character from one of the most beloved animated films of all-time that we actually never seen or knew about. I know Disney wouldn't do this unless they thought it could make money, but I just think that this might be a really bad decision in the end.

My Review of Everybody Wants Some!!

So I recently watched Everybody Wants Some!! and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Everybody Wants Some poster.png

In 1980 Texas, a college freshman (played by Blake Jenner) meets his new baseball teammates (played by Will Brittain and Ryan Guzman), an unruly group of disco-dancing, skirt-chasing partyers.

This was a really fun film to watch. Richard Linkliter is a master director and he does two things really well in films and that's comedy and baseball together and both work well in this film. He is able to show us the young adult human emotion that college kids have and it works so well that you as an audience member are invested in what they are doing. It understands the story it is trying to tell as well as the time the film is set in. The film is somewhat of a sequel to Dazed and Confused, but it really doesn't connect to it much as Linkliter has mentioned in interviews. The film has a relaxed feel to it where you just understand everything going on and it moves at a really smooth and nice pace where it tries to  build every character up and they are all developed really well. There are some points in the film where it tries to spout off a lot of nonsense that just doesn't go well with the film and at there times where you wonder why those moments are in the film. The cast in the film is a pretty great, but the standout is Blake Jenner who just proved that he has acting chops and he'll be in a lot of good roles in the upcoming future. Also the the soundtrack for this film is outstanding and it might even top Guardians of the Galaxy for best film soundtrack of all-time. Overall this might Linkliter's second best film just behind Boyhood, but it just misses on a few of the jokes and it adds a few scenes that were totally unnecessary, but it is a look at one of the very early 2017 Oscar contenders. I give Everybody Wants Some!! a 9 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Everybody Wants Some!!, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

My Review of I Saw the Light

So I recently watched I Saw the Light and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

I Saw The Light.jpg

Singer and songwriter Hank Williams (played by Tom Hiddleston) rises to fame in the 1940s, but alcohol abuse and infidelity take a toll on his career and marriage to fellow musician Audrey Mae Williams (played by Elizabeth Olsen).

This was a terribly disappointing film. Hank Williams is one of the more interesting figures to have a bio-pic done about mainly because he went through a lot of stuff in his short-lived life and the film covers a lot of the major points of his life, but there is no build to them. It just feels like a bunch of scenes put together. Tom Hiddelston is the best part of the film and he was perfect as Hank Williams, but  he just looks really uncomfortable with the material he was given. The rest of the cast is just brutal and you don't care about anything they do throughout the film. It feels like a big-time paint by numbers film where everything you have in a bio-pic is present and it all just feels like reused material. Going back to Hiddelston, he does a great job of singing like Williams and you almost can't tell the difference. The film is also depressing which is a reflection of everything going on behind the scenes of Williams's life, but the depressing moments are just too much and they happen far too often. Overall this was a film with a lot of potential to really dive deep into the life of Hank Williams, but we don't really get that and instead we just get scene after scene with no emotional interest involved. I give I Saw the Light a 1 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of I Saw the Light, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.

3-28-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

In the latest issue of Empire magazine (via CBM), writer-director Matthew Vaugh revealed that the Kingsman 2 title will be Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Vaughn went on to confirm that the film will see Taron Egerton’s Eggsy and Mark Strong’s Merlin heading to the United States, where they’ll find an American verison of their own organization, lead by a “swaggering, sharpshooting cowboy.” “I didn’t know if I wanted to direct this or not,” Vaughn said of the film. “I was worried about the villain. Spy films are only as good as their villains. Then one morning I woke up with the whole storyline in place, and a new villain plot.” When asked if he would try to outdo the “church seqeunce” from the first film in the sequel, Vaughn said: “You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence. I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before.” 20th Century Fox has set a June 16, 2017 release date for Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Casting updates on the sequel so far have suggested that we will see Halle Berry join the franchise as the head of the CIA, with Julianne Moore in talks to play the film’s central villain. Edward Holcroft is also set to appear in the film, though whether he will reprise as his character from the first remains to be seen.

I really love this title. It just sounds like something a film like Kingsman would have. Also the plot of the film makes sense and it shows that there is a bigger world outside of Kingsman and the fact that United States has their own service similar really thickens the plot. I love the idea of Julianne Moore being the villain because it's something we've not seen in a spy film where a woman is the main villain. I absolutely loved the first Kingsman and the fact that Matthew Vaughn is coming back direct a sequel shows how much he cares about the property and I cannot wait to see what he does with this film.

Following this first trailer released last week, Warner Bros. Pictures has decided that one wasn’t enough and that another The LEGO Batman Movie trailer should debut online, and with it you can see inside Wayne Manor along with some of the Batman villains that will appear in the film! You can check it out below. Will Arnett reprises his role of Batman from The LEGO Movie as the voice of the titular Dark Knight, alongside Michael Cera as Robin the boy wonder, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred Pennyworth, Mariah Carey as Gotham’s mayor and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker. In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The LEGO Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure: The LEGO Batman Movie. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Chris McKay is directing The LEGO Batman Movie from a script by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter creator Seth Grahame-Smith (who will direct The Flash for Warner Bros. Pictures). Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed The LEGO Movie, are producing the film along with Dan Lin. The LEGO Batman Movie will open in theaters on February 10, 2017.

This trailer was way better than the first one. Both of them have been wonderful teases so far, but this one takes the cake. I love how they acknowledged all of the previous incarnations of Batman with the live action films that have come out on the past. We also got a quick glance at a few of the villains that will be making appearances in the film as well. If this film can be as good as The Lego Movie, then I think we have a whole new franchise to look forward to.

Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have debuted a new international Warcraft trailer, which you can watch below! Titled Warcraft: The Beginning internationally, the film will be released overseas starting on May 25 and in North America on June 10. Warcraft is an epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based on Blizzard Entertainment’s global phenomenon. The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home. So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and written by Charles Leavitt and Jones, the film stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky and Daniel Wu. Warcraft is a Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production. The producers are Charles Roven, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Alex Gartner and Stuart Fenegan. Jillian Share, Brent O’Connor, Michael Morhaime and Paul Sams serve as executive producers. Rob Pardo, Chris Metzen, Nick Carpenter and Rebecca Steel Roven co-produce.

This was a pretty decent trailer. It showed a lot of new footage that we haven't seen before and they really helped develop what the film is going to be about. It also looked like the visual effects were more developed this time around compared to the last trailer. As I've mentioned before, I am not the biggest World of Warcraft guy, but this film is really interesting for a lot of different reasons. This film has a lot of pressure on it when it comes to possibly being the first video game movie to actually work on the big screen and I think the film can do it.

New Line Cinema has debuted a chilling new The Conjuring 2 trailer, featuring returning stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Check out The Conjuring 2 trailer below, and catch the movie in theaters on June 10! Unlike the recent spinoff film, Annabelle (which explored the back story of the first film’s terrifying doll), The Conjuring 2 will continue the based-on-truth adventures of the Warrens, whose cases have also inspired the likes of The Haunting in Connecticut and most notably, The Amityville Horror. In the sequel, Lorraine and Ed Warren travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits. The Conjuring 2 also stars Frances O’Connor (TV’s “The Missing”) as the single mom, with Madison Wolfe (TV’s “Zoo”) and newcomers Lauren Esposito, Patrick McAuley and Benjamin Haigh as her children; Maria Doyle Kennedy (TV’s “Orphan Black”); Simon Delaney (TV’s “Roy”); Franka Potente (TV’s “The Bridge”); and Simon McBurney (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation).  In addition to directing the film, James Wan wrote the screenplay with Carey Hayes & Chad Hayes, and David Leslie Johnson. Peter Safran, Wan and Rob Cowan, who previously collaborated on The Conjuring, are producing. The film follows the phenomenal worldwide reception of Wan’s The Conjuring, which marked the largest opening ever for an original horror movie in 2013. The film went on to make more than $319 million worldwide and still remains the second-highest grossing original horror movie of all time, second only to The Exorcist.

This was a pretty haunting trailer. Usually horror trailers don't creep me out, but this one really got the best of me. It had a lot of nice scares that developed throughout the trailer and it got absolutely terrifying. I really enjoy the premise of this film and how it's a whole new adventure for us as an audience to go on with Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Conjuring was a really great film and the fact that everyone from the first film is back gets me excited that this film is going to be great.

In addition to The Conjuring 2 trailer, producer James Wan also debuted the Lights Out trailer at WonderCon. You can watch the Lights Out trailer in the player below! From New Line Cinema comes a tale of an unknown terror that lurks in the dark. When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out…and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger…once the lights go out. Directed by David F. Sandberg from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer, based on the short film by David F. Sandberg, Lights Out stars Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, with Billy Burke and Maria Bello. The film is produced by James Wan, Lawrence Grey and Eric Heisserer, and executive produced by Walter Hamada, Dave Neustadter, Richard Brener, Michael Clear, Jack Murray and Ben Everard. Lights Out opens in theaters on July 22.

This was a pretty decent trailer. Now as the article mentioned, it was a short film that had went viral on Facebook over the past year or so and I watched it one late night and it's amazing that a 2 minuted and 45 seconds would freak me out. Once you seen the monster it puts it into a whole new perspective of what this film can become. I love the fact that a viral award winning short is getting made into a film which actually inspires me to do some things that I have always planned on doing. I'm really looking forward to the film a whole lot and I hope that it does well.
