Weekend Movie News 8-7-15 to 8-9-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Warner Bros. Pictures has delayed two of the Ben Affleck movies the studio had scheduled for the next two years, including the crime-drama Live By Night, his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Argo, and The Accountant, Gavin O’Connor’s action-thriller co-starring Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons. This is the second delay for Live by Night, which Affleck was writing and directing, as it’s moved to sometime in 2017 from October 2016, although Affleck had already cast Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Elle Fanning for the Boston-set period piece based on Dennis Lehane‘s novel. (Affleck’s directorial debut Gone Baby Gone was also based on Lehane’s work.) The Accountant will be pushed back from January 2016 to October 7, 2016, which is the same weekend in which Argo was released as well as other Warner Bros. hits, such as 2013’s Gravity. The presumption is that they want Affleck to focus on writing his solo Batman movie with Geoff Johns, while also preparing to reprise his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which will start filming in Spring 2016.

This is actually a really great decision. Usually when a studio moves back a film(s) it usually isn't a good sign, but in this case it is. The rumor is that this past week Warner Bros. executives were shown an early screening of Batman v. Superman and they apparently gave it a standing ovation and gave a lot of praise to Affleck and they want him to make not just one Batman film, but three solo Batman films and in order for that to happen he has to move a few other projects around so he can have time to write and prepare the Batman films. So personally this tells me that the studio is really confident in not only Affleck as Batman, but that they also have enough faith in the other films to move them back when they are potential Oscar contenders.

James Wan, whose Furious 7 hit theaters earlier this summer, is, according to a story today at The Tracking Board, set to serve as producer on New Line Cinema and Broken Road’s Mortal Kombat movie. With Wan set to produce, it is believed that the Mortal Kombat movie will move forward sooner rather than later. The project was being planned, a few years back, to be helmed by choreographer-turned-director Kevin Tancharoen. Responsible for the popular web series adaptation, “Mortal Kombat: Legacy,” Tancharoen announced himself that he would not helm the Mortal Kombat movie back in 2013. The first Mortal Kombat video game was developed by Midway Games and released in 1992. The storyline sees a diverse range of fighters hailing from eighteen different realms become pitted against one another in an epic tournament. Quite a few sequels followed the original game with the most recent, Mortal Kombat X, seeing release earlier this year. In addition to the web series, two Mortal Kombat movies have already been released. The first, simply titled Mortal Kombat, was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and saw release in 1995. It was followed two years later with a sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which also paved the way for two television series: the animated “Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm” and the live-action “Mortal Kombat: Konquest.” According the outlet, the Mortal Kombat movie will follow a male protagonist who becomes drawn into the interdimensional tournament, and who begins to realize his true potential as a result of the experience. The screenplay hails from “Legacy” scribe Oren Uziel and well as The Expendables and Godzilla‘s Dave Callaham. Before his Furious 7 took the summer box office by storm (grossing an impressive $1.5 billion worldwide), Wan was already receiving acclaim for his 2013 hit The Conjuring. Wan is returning to direct the sequel, The Conjuring: The Endfield Poltergeist, which is slated to hit theaters June 10, 2016. Want will also direct Warner Bros.’ Aquaman movie, starring Jason Momoa and opening in theaters on July 27, 2018.

This is really great news to hear. James Wan is a man on fire at this point after the huge financial success of Furious 7 and he is being mentioned for every film in some capacity. He has stepped up his game into other genres after being a horror master for so many years and I think this is a great fit. With him producing and him being in the back pocket of Warner Bros. after they helped distribute The Conjuring (directed by Wan), will release Aqauman (directed by Wan) and are releasing the Conjuring 2 (directed by Wan) it make sense for him to go to the company owned by Warner Bros. (New Line) to possibly direct the film and if he directs the film then we will be in for a special treat. I'm a fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise and while I really enjoy the first film and dislike the second film, I'm hoping that I can actually love a version of this amazing franchise.

Plans for a feature film followup to director ‘s Tommy Wirkola 2013 fairy tale action thriller are moving forward today as Deadline reports that commercials helmer Bruno Aveillan will make his feature film debut helming Paramount Pictures’ Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2. Although Wirkola won’t be returning to the director’s chair on the upcoming sequel, he recently announced that he had completed work on the project’s screenplay and that the biggest production hurdle has been about finding time in star Jeremy Renner’s busy schedule. “I can only say there’s voodoo involved,” Wirkola recently teased of the sequel in an interview with CraveOnline. The original Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters also stars Gemma Arterton and Famke Jansen and takes place 15 years after the mythic Hansel and Gretel incident at a witch’s gingerbread house. Arterton, who will also return for the sequel, plays the titular Gretel. She and Renner’s Hansel are now specialized bounty hunters looking to put down the cackling black-hat set. The first film grossed $55 million domestically and over $170 million internationally. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 will be produced by Gary Sanchez Productions’ Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick and Flynn Picture Co.’s Beau Flynn. Several examples of Aveillan’s previous projects are available online at his Vimeo page. In the player below, you can check out a short commercial he directed for Shangri-La Hotel and Resorts, which takes place in a snowy wood environment not entirely dissimilar from what audiences saw in Wirkola’s original Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

I really hate this idea. Now granted the first film made a lot of money on a very small budget so from a financial standpoint it makes a lot of sense for a sequel. I personally hated the first film and I never wanted to see a sequel and well those dreams have been shattered. There are a lot of ways you can with the second film, but with a guy is used to doing commercials making his directorial debut kind of scares me. I may not be excited for the film, but I am interested to see where the film will go.

The fifth installment of 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ Ice Age franchise has been given the title Ice Age: Collision Course and Fox has wisely moved it back a week to avoid the fact that Sony just moved Ghostbusters onto its original date. The movie will now open on July 22, 2016 with the release date change putting the movie up against Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur, which itself is trying to kick off a new franchise based on the British legends. Once again featuring the voices of John Leguizamo, Ray Romano, Denis Leary and Queen Latifah voicing their characters of Sid, Manny, Diego and Ellie and joined by Keke Palmer, Wanda Sykes and Jay Leno, the story for Collision Course is unknown at this time.  To date, the four previous “Ice Age” movies have grossed $729.6 million domestically and $2.8 billion globally with the last two installments grossing over $850 million worldwide.

I'm in amazement that this franchise is still going on. I mean if you think about the first film came out back in 2002 and it just goes to show that this franchise has a lot of life left in it. I really enjoyed the first two films and to be honest I haven't seen the other two films so I need to catch up on those before this new film is released. With each new film the franchise had the worldwide total go up for each and with the last film making over $877 million with pretty bad reviews, this new film could reach $1 billion easily especially if it has pretty decent reviews. I also like the release date as it shows that the studio has confidence in the film for it to be a summer release and it will be great counter-programming for the King Arthur film.

Lionsgate and Hasbro are teaming up to prove that “friendship is magic” as the two companies are developing a big screen, animated My Little Pony movie. Meghan McCarthy, fan-favorite writer and producer for the “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” animated series, is penning the screenplay, which will be produced by Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures. Lionsgate will be distributing and marketing the film globally (except in China ). Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth will voice a new character in the film, which is Hasbro’s first animated feature. The “My Little Pony” brand has been enchanting fans of all ages worldwide for more than 30 years with its socially relevant messages of acceptance and friendship. What started in 1983 as a toy line of colorful ponies with unique symbols, called “cutie marks,” has since exploded into international, multi-media, pop culture phenomena that grossed over $1 billion in retail sales in 2014. The entertainment continues to engage and inspire kids and families in over 180 countries across the globe. “We are pleased to partner with Hasbro to bring their brands to audiences in new and exciting ways,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-President Erik Feig.” Meghan McCarthy and the ‘My Little Pony’ cast are a very talented and cohesive team whom we’re happy to be working with and we’re excited about the addition of the very talented Kristin Chenoweth, as we explore new aspects of these characters and new story opportunities for the franchise.”

“We are thrilled to expand the ‘My Little Pony’ story to the big screen, and take these beloved characters on a new and unexpected journey that will delight fans of all ages,” said Stephen Davis, Chief Content Officer, Hasbro, Inc. “It’s an honor to add Kristin Chenoweth to the cast as the voice of an all new, never-before-seen ‘My Little Pony’ character in the film. Her incredible Broadway and silver screen performances in “Wicked,” “Glee,” and many more make her the perfect fit for this animated, musical adventure.” In the movie, a new dark force threatens Ponyville, and the Mane 6 – Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity – embark on an unforgettable journey beyond Equestria where they meet new friends and exciting challenges on a quest to use the magic of friendship and save their home. The My Little Pony movie will feature all new music with the Mane Six characters voiced by Tara Strong, Cathy Weseluck, Andrea Libman, Tabitha St. Germain and Ashleigh Ball. Jayson Theissen is directing. Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are producing the film with Meghan McCarthy and Michael Vogel co-executive producing. Creative executives Jeyun Choi Munford and Kyle Benn will oversee the movie on behalf of Lionsgate, and Josh Feldman is overseeing development on behalf of Hasbro. The deal was negotiated by Jean Chi , Executive Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs for Lionsgate, and Michael Eisner, Senior Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs for Hasbro. This is the second film from Lionsgate and Hasbro, who are also producing a live action film based on the iconic board game, Monopoly.

I'm surprised that this hasn't happened already. I say that because this is a very recognizable brand with a pretty big fanbase and plus all of these other ideas have been made and have had financial success. I can't for the life of me think why a studio would take such a long time to make a My Little Pony film. Now to be very clear I am not a Bronie and I never intend on being one, but I have nothing against them becuase we all have our various obsessions. I think from a studio standpoint financially this makes a lot of sense and it could end up being an amazing film.
