8-11-15 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Disney’s D23 Expo is this weekend, and though they’re set to reveal a whole slew of details about their slate of films, one thing they won’t be showing is new Star Wars: The Force Awakens footage. “We are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise,” director J.J. Abrams tells EW. “In the fall, there’ll be a trailer…We’re thrilled to go to D23 and meet the fans, but it’s a tricky thing to try and rush [footage] for a convention or preexisting event that would, of course, be fun to show something at.” Abrams also took the time to disclose where they’re at in post-production on the film, adding: “I’m still editing and we’re working on refining the cut, but it’s incredibly fun to see the movie come together. You realize certain things that you don’t need, certain things you can pull out.” Though no footage will be shown at the event, it’s entirely possible for a new poster or images to make their world premiere. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and features a new generation of swashbuckling heroes and shadowy villains, as well as the return of fan-favorite smugglers, princesses, and Jedi. Starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemou, the J.J. Abrams-directed film will debut in theaters on December 18, 2015. It will be followed on December 16, 2016 by Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26, 2017, and the Han Solo anthology movie on May 25, 2018. No release dates have been announced for Star Wars: Episode IX and the third anthology movie.

This news really makes me mad. I say that because I'm a fan and while both trailers have been absolutely amazing thus far, we have no idea what the film is about other than it is set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi. I understand what JJ is saying about throwing things together and I get that they are still in post-production, but you still put out a trailer back in April while you were still in post-production and that was five months after you finished filming the movie and you still released a teaser trailer. I just don't get how you don't put out something at Disney's biggest event of the year and where you are going to get a lot of exposure for the film. The film does have a lot of attention, but still it gives the fans a little bit more insight and build up the excitement even more. We could still get a lot of really cool and neat stuff, but I really think the fans were looking forward to getting a more story oriented trailer after not getting one at comic-con a month ago. This could all be a big smokescreen and they could still show something because JJ has been know to play things close to the chest, but after the announcement of no new footage at comic-con this actually might be a true statement.

Although the film is still without an official title, director Clint Eastwood’s upcoming biopic of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger has added The Dark Knight and Battle: Los Angeles‘ Aaron Eckhart to its cast. The Hollywood Reporter has the news, bringing word that Aaron Eckhart will play Jeff Skiles, first officer and co-pilot to Hanks’ Captain Sully during the 2009 incident famously known as the Miracle on the Hudson. The film will be based on Sullenberger’s own 2009 autobiography, Highest Duty. Written with Jeffrey Zaslow, the book is described on Sullenberger’s official site as follows: On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed a remarkable emergency landing when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger skillfully glided US Airways Flight 1549 onto the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. His cool actions not only averted tragedy but made him a hero and an inspiration worldwide. Highest Duty is Sully’s story—a story of dedication, hope, and preparedness, revealing the important lessons he learned through childhood, in his military service, and in his work as a commercial airline pilot. It reminds us all that, even in these days of war, tragedy, and economic uncertainty, there are values still worth fighting for—that life’s challenges can be met if we’re ready for them. “I am very glad my story is in the hands of gifted storyteller and filmmaker Clint Eastwood, and veteran producers Allyn Stewart and Frank Marshall,” said Sullenberger of the feature film earlier this year. “The project could not have found a better home than Warner Bros. Pictures. This is truly a dream team.” Aaron Eckart recently headlined the supernatural actioner I, Frankenstein. He’ll soon reprise his role as the President of the United States in the upcoming Olympus Has Fallen sequel, London Has Fallen. Eastwood will also produce the film through his Malpaso Productions alongside Frank Marshall of Kennedy/Marshall and Allyn Stewart of Flashlight Films.

This is really great casting. Aaron Eckhart has been a very serviceable actor in every film he has been in when he is given the right part or right script. I think that he is a prefect fit for this film simply because I think he has the stature to be on screen opposite Tom Hanks. So fa everything I have heard from the film sounds great and I think this will definitely be an Oscar contender as long as Clint Eastwood can direct films like younger Clint Eastwood did back when he did Unforgiven, Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby.

Bleecker Street Films has just released the poster design for the upcoming Trumbo, which stars “Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston as blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. You can check out the poster below. Directed by Jay Roach (The Campaign, Game Change), Trumbo follows the successful career of the 1940s screenwriter and explores how it all came to a crushing end when he and other Hollywood figures are blacklisted for their political beliefs. The film tells the story of Trumbo’s fight against the U.S. government and studio bosses in a war over words and freedom, which entangled everyone in Hollywood from Hedda Hopper (Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) and John Wayne to Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. Trumbo published his first novel, “Eclipse,” in 1935 with his first screenplay, director Louis King’s Road Gang, hitting the big screen the following year. With more than a dozen subsequent credits to his name, Trumbo was the highest paid screenwriter of his day when he was brought before Senator Joseph McCarthy’s House Un-American Activities Committee. Refusing to testify, Trumbo was blacklisted, but continued to write under fake names, winning Academy Awards for both Irving Rapper’s The Brave One and William Wyler’s Roman Holiday. Also set to star are Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Pompeii, Thor: The Dark World), Louis C.K. (“Louie”, American Hustle), Elle Fanning (Super 8, The Boxtrolls), John Goodman (The Big Lebowski, The Monuments Men), Diane Lane (Man of Steel, The Perfect Storm), Alan Tudyk (Serenity, Wreck-It Ralph) and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Men in Black 3), Trumbo hits the big screen in a limited release November 6.

I really like this poster. It doesn't show much, but it shows you enough to sort of get a feel for what the film is about. This has been a film that has interested me for a long time and I say that because the film is about Dalton Trumbo who is one of the greatest screenwriters of all-time and as a screenwriter on the side it does give me a little bit of excitement. The cast of the film is simply amazing and I think this will be a big player come Oscar season and I can't wait to see the first trailer for the film which will probably be out tomorrow.

The comedy sequel set to hit theaters early next year, Universal Pictures has today revealed the Ride Along 2 poster and you can check it out below “The Brothers-in-Law are Back,” proclaims the new Ride Along 2 poster, which reunites Ride Along stars Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. Joining Hart and Cube for the next chapter of the series are director Tim Story, as well as Cube’s fellow producers—Will Packer, Matt Alvarez and Larry Brezner—who will produce alongside Cube. Also set to star in Ride Along 2 are Ken Jeong (“Community,” The Hangover Trilogy), Benjamin Bratt (Despicable Me 2, “Law & Order”), Olivia Munn (“The Newsroom,” X-Men: Apocalypse), Bruce McGill (Collateral, “Rizzoli & Isles”), Tika Sumpter (Ride Along, Salt) and  Sherri Shepherd (“The View,” Precious). Scripted by Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi and based on characters created by Greg Coolidge, Ride Along 2 is executive produced by Nicolas Stern, Ron Muhammad, Scott Bernstein, Chris Bender and JC Spink. Ride Along 2 hits the big screen January 15, 2016.

This is a pretty bland poster. It is pretty much the same poster as the first film, but with more smiles and different costumes. Look I'll be honest I didn't like the first film and in fact for a short time it was my worst movie of 2014, but only for a few weeks. I've said it it before I like the pairing of Ice Cube and Kevin Hart especially now after seeing Ice Cube do some really great comedy in 21 and 22 Jump street in the first film I expected laugh a lot and I just didn't. The filmmakers have to step up their game and not show so much in the trailers. I hope that this film can be better than the first, but with this film coming out in January, it doesn't give me a lot of optimism.

Universal Pictures has just released a new Jem and the Holograms trailer, which you can watch below. As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ Jem and the Holograms movie, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice. The musical adventure stars Aubrey Peeples as Jem, Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja and Ryan Guzman as Rio. Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis also star in unrevealed roles. Created by Christy Marx, the original “Jem and the Holograms” series was a joint collaboration from Hasbro, Marvel and Sunbow Productions. It began airing in 1985 and ran for three seasons, following the adventures of the titular Jem, the musical superstar alter ego of a young woman named Jerrica Benton who, with the help of a holographic computer called Synergy, is able to clandestinely perform rock concerts with her friends. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the Jem and the Holograms movie is written by Ryan Landels and produced by Chu, Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun for SB Projects, Bennett Schneir, and Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis of Hasbro Studios. The Jem and the Holograms movie hits theaters on October 23.

Well that was a great way to give away the entire movie. Literally the trailer just gave away the entire film and that automatically shows me that the studio has no faith in the film after doing this for the second time with this films marketing campaign. I honestly want to know if their is any way I can stop this film from coming out before it turns into an absolute disaster. Look I know I should keep a positive outlook for the film, but there is no hope for the film whatsoever, but there is always a slight possibility that it can be good.
