Weekend Movie News 8-28-15 to 8-30-15

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

While we thought we might be able to get through the summer without losing another filmmaking great, it’s being reported that one of horror’s finest filmmakers and the man responsible for some of the biggest horror hits of all time, Mr. Wes Craven, is dead at the age of 76. Not a lot has been reported about Craven’s passing, but we’ll update this as we learn more. Craven, of course, is best known for the hit horror franchise that began with 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, which introduced Freddy Krueger to the world (as well as a 21-year-old Johnny Depp), but the filmmaker had already been making edgy horror films for over a decade before that, most notably 1972’s The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes in 1977. A Nightmare on Elm Street was a huge breakout, leading to multiple sequels, but Craven was only also involved with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, which he wrote and produced. In 1994, he’d return to that world in a more meta way with Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, but two years later, he decided to spoof the slasher subgenre of horror he helped create with 1994’s Scream, which would kick off an even more successful horror franchise with two huge sequels in 1997 and 2000. While Craven directed a number of movies in the past ten years, including the aptly-titled Cursed and the hit thriller Red Eye, he became more focused on producing remakes of his earlier films The Hills Have Eyes and The Last House on the Left.  In recent years, Craven has been involved with bringing Scream to television with the hit MTV show, but 2011’s Scream 4 would be his last feature film as director. Craven’s most recent production, The Girl in the Photographs, starring Kal Penn, will premiere as part of “Midnight Madness” at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. It’s a sad day for horror fans who know Craven for all of the films he wrote, directed and produced.

This is really sad news to hear. Wes Craven is a horror icon and I personally think he is bigger than the monsters and villains he created in Freddy Kruger and Ghostface. He also did The Hills Have Eyes and The Last House on the Left, I mean this guy was horror genius. He hasn't done a lot recently other than working on the new Scream tv series (which is ok) and a couple of other tv shows, but he is irreplaceable and no one will ever come close to his mastery ever again. R.I.P. Wes Craven.

Although “Hannibal” has just one episode left, leading man Mads Mikkelsen’s future is looking awfully bright. Not only will he star in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Star Wars entry, Rogue One, but Variety is now reporting that Mads Mikkelsen is also in talks to play a mystery villain role in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange! Whoever he’s playing, Mads Mikkelsen won’t be the only villain in the Scott Derrickson film. It was revealed back in June that Chiwetel Ejiofor will be playing the good doctor’s arch foe, Baron Mordo. Despite Mordo’s villainous role in the comics, it was said when Eijofor’s casting was announced that the cinematic version will serve as an amalgamation of several characters in the Strange canon. It’s likely that we’ll first see Mordo an ally. This isn’t the first time that Marvel has looked to Mads Mikkelsen to play a comic book villain. Back in 2012, Mikkelsen was up for the role of Malekith in Thor: The Dark World. The part ultimate went to “Doctor Who” star Christopher Eccleston. Scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016, Doctor Strange is scripted by Jon Spaihts and directed by Scott Derrickson. It is said to follow the story of neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. Also attached to star in Doctor Strange is Tilda Swinton, who will be playing the Ancient One. Rachel McAdams has also been rumored for an as of yet unconfirmed role.

If true, then this is terrific casting. Mads Mikkelsen is one of the most underrated actors in business and every film he is in is just brilliant. My favorite film of his is The Hunt which in my opinion should've won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, but I digress. I think he is a really great fit for this type of comic book film and he could very well become an iconic villain. Getting a part in an MCU film shows that people respect his body of work and hopefully after the film, more of the general public will know him better as well.

Cameras are just about ready to roll on the new, currently-untitled Jason Bourne film that will feature the return of Academy Award-winning actor Matt Damon to the title role with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum helmer Paul Greengrass back in the director’s chair. Now BuzzFeed has talked to the actor about what we can expect in terms of plot and location in Bourne 5, which he is co-writing with Greengrass and Christopher Rouse. “Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” Damon said. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.” As for what far-off locales the story will see this post-Snowden Bourne whisked off to, Damon will be returning to a city very familiar to Ocean’s Eleven fans. “We’re starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy,” he said. “And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of….” [trails off laughing] Little is known about the plot of the new film, although it has been confirmed that it will not feature a crossover between Damon’s Bourne and Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross. Julia Stiles will be reprising her franchise role of ex-CIA agent Nicky Parsons, however, with Ex Machina‘s Alicia Vikander in the female lead and Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones as a high-ranking CIA officer. Frank Marshall will again produce the new film alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment. Greengrass, Damon and Greg Goodman also produce. Production should begin shortly on Bourne 5 as the film is slated to hit the big screen July 29, 2016.

This is really interesting stuff to read. I really like how the franchise is going to use a few things that have gone on in real-life to sort of help influence the films plot as it will help bring a real-world perspective to it. It also makes sense to not have Jason Bourne and Aaron Cross to be in the same film just yet, but I do believe that either in Bourne 6 or 7 they will meet and it should be a fun film. I'm glad that Damon and Greengrass are back together working on the new film and I think it has the chance to be really great.

A new Goosebumps international trailer has been released today and you can check it out in the player below, thanks to Sony Pictures India (via /Film)! This one features even more Goosebumps monster mayhem from the October release. Directed by Rob Letterman, the big screen adaptation of R.L. Stine‘s classic YA books stars Jack Black, Amy Ryan, Ken Marino, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Jillian Bell and Ryan Lee.  Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling “Goosebumps” series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong. “All the early monsters that are in the books [are in the film],” the real life R.L. Stine told ComingSoon.net in an exclusive interview last month. “They all come out, they’re all there. The real evil one is Slappy the Dummy, he’s there, the Abominable Snowman from Pasadena is there, and lawn gnomes, HUNDREDS of lawn gnomes. They’re great, they’re really good.”

This was actually a really great trailer. I liked it better than the first one and this one even made me laugh a little in the process as well. From the moment this film was announced I was a little concerned about how they would make a movie on a collection of books, but I seemed to have an answer. I think the film looks really good and Jack Black looks like he will pull this role off and I cannot wait to check out the film.

Lionsgate has announced today they’re developing a big screen version of the fan-favorite video game series Borderlands. Father-son duo Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Iron Man) and Ari Arad will produce the Borderlands movie. “We believe that we’ve brought together the right partners, the ideal creative team and the perfect property to launch a new motion picture tent-pole for a global audience,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger. “Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows. The ‘Borderlands’ games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.” “Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force in the global marketplace with an incredible portfolio of brands; our partners at Gearbox have pioneered and cultivated an iconic property; and Avi and Ari Arad are two of the most successful producers of action franchises,” publisher Take-Two Interactive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said. “This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight ‘Borderlands” current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.” “We’re thrilled to extend our partnership with Jon Feltheimer, Michael Burns, Rob, Patrick and the amazing team at Lionsgate and join forces with Take-Two and Gearbox on this incredible property,” said Avi and Ari Arad. “‘Borderlands’ has a unique story-driven narrative energy and rich multidimensional characters that position it to become a singular motion picture event.” “Creating, developing and continuing to build the ‘Borderlands’ franchise at Gearbox Software has been an incredible ride where the most powerful fuel to our engine has been the astonishing outpouring of love and devotion from the fans,” said Randy Pitchford , President and Co-Founder of Gearbox Software. “It is the passion of the fans driving the growing success of Borderlands that brought what I believe to be the best team of film producers, marketing and distribution experts in the world together to deliver the exciting story and unique characters of Borderlands to the big screen.”

Developed by Gearbox Software, the first action-RPG in the series was released in 2009 with a follow-up released in 2012 and a “pre-sequel” in 2014. The first game is officially described as follows: “In a distant future, the planets at the outer edges of the galaxy have become a beacon to fortune seekers and those yearning for a better life off world. But there are no guarantees in deep space. Pandora, one of these distant planets, was reported to be rich in untapped mineral wealth, and so drew many hoping to get rich quick, but in the end little was found beyond the scattered ruins of a past alien civilization. With nothing to gain, any who could soon abandoned Pandora, leaving those who remained to deal with the lawlessness of a world gone bust, and the mystery of the long-dead alien civilization. But as chaotic as these times were, there were worse days yet to come. After several years the planet’s huge orbit slowly brought it near to its sun and once unknown and horrifying creatures sprang from their long hibernation to terrify the stranded colonists. The only hope of the colonists seems to be a vault discovered in the side of a mountainside, rumored to contain alien technology and secrets about Pandora.” The deal was orchestrated by a Lionsgate team led by President of Interactive Ventures & Games Peter Levin, Summit Entertainment President of Production Geoff Shaevitz and Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President of Business & Legal Affairs Patricia Laucella .

This is a fantastic idea. Now I haven't played any of the games that much, but what little I did play them I did enjoy it a lot. I think this film will work simply because of the success of Mad Max: Fury Road. I say that becasue this is set in somewhat of the same type area which is a barren wasteland made up mostly of desert with a lot of action. This has the chance to be a really good film, but it depends on who they get to direct and star in the film.
