My Review of Moonlight

So I recently watched Moonlight and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado......

Moonlight (2016 film).png

A young man deals with his dysfunctional home life and comes of age in Miami during the "War on Drugs" era. The story of his struggle to find himself is told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love while grappling with his own sexuality.

This is a very beautiful and powerful film. Much like Boyhood 2 years, this film is a real character driven film and it is a film that is very important for our culture today and especially for the younger generation who are just now starting to grow and realize who they want to be. You see this young boy at three very important stages in life and how he handles each one and how each one has an effect on his life down the line and how we should make every decision carefully due to the possible outcomes. Barry Jenkins does a phenomenal job of really getting the story right and making everything feel so impactful that this film will be very memorable for you. Both Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali are so great in this film and look for both to get nominated in both the Supporting Actress and Actors categories with Ali likely to take home Oscar gold. As mentioned before this film is a lot like Boyhood in the sense that it takes one little boy and shows him grow up through the years and that was done with the same actor. In this film however you use three different actors and that is a really ambitious move simply because you have to have each new actor be able to pick up right where the previous one left off and be able to convey those same emotions to make it feel that we are watching the same person every time and that's one thing that this film doesn't do well. The middle portion of the film (titled Chiron) is really the downfall in the film and you really don't get the connection between the Little portion of the film (the first act title) and the Black (the third act title) and with nothing in the middle to anchor the rest of the film then the film as a whole falls apart. Overall this is a brilliant film that took a lot of chances and succeeded on most, but the middle portion of the film just bottoms out and it really just loses the connection for the rest of the film. I give Moonlight a 9 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Moonlight, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
