1. La La Land tied a record for the most nominations by one film with 14 tying it with All About Eve and Titanic, Had it made the shortlist for Makeup & Hairstyling, then it would've broken the record. La La Land is gonna come away with a lot of gold at the ceremony and I expect between 10 and 12 wins with 12 setting a record for most wins by one film. The most it can win is 13 due to it being nominated twice for Best Original Song so at the most they'll get 13. I think other than Best Actor, they have a really good shot to win in everything else.
2. We have no OscarsSoWhite campaign this year after such a strong year for African-Americans in the film industry. We got 3 African-American women nominated in Best Supporting Actress category which is just phenomenal. Everyone nominated in their respective categories has a great chance to win and I fully expect Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis to win in the Supporting Actor and Actresses categories respectively.
3. With a massive surprise nomination, Mel Gibson was nominated for Best Director. After all of the very public previous incidents that Mel Gibson has been involved in, nobody expected him to get a nomination and seeing his name brings me great joy. What he was able to do with Hacksaw Ridge deserves a lot of praise and he has a shot to pull off the upset and steal the Oscar from Damien Chazellle
4. If there were any snubs when it comes to the nominations this year, I would have to say Amy Adams not getting a Best Actress nomination for Arrival. While Meryl Streep was good in Florence Foster Jenkins, I don't think it should've gotten her a nomination. Also Isabelle Huppert being in there is kind of shocking as well, but after her getting the Golden Globes win it was sort of obvious she was getting the nomination.
5. I have to say that this might be the most predictable Oscars ever. I mean with La La Land being almost universally loved and being very hard to bet against it, every award seems like it knows where it is going.
