My Review of Live By Night

So I recently watched Live by Night and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

A man in a white suit, sitting a large brown armchair, pointing a gun.

It's the Roaring `20s and Prohibition hasn't stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve, and Joe Coughlin (played by Ben Affleck), the son of the Boston Police superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules, and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll.

This might be the most disappointing film of 2016. One of the main reasons why it is disappointing is due to the man behind the camera Mr. Ben Affleck. Now Ben Affleck has had a career resurgence since 2006 and everything he churns out tends to be magnificent and his three previous directorial films all were outstanding and his most recent one Argo won Best Picture at the 85th Academy Awards. Also his acting skills have gotten better now that he has learnt how to direct and and guide other actors to get magnificent performances out of them. However this film is terribly boring and really stupid. This has been a passion project for Ben Affleck and unfortunately who should've stayed away from the film. The film has a decent story but no sense of direction and it doesn't know what type of film it wants to be as it has a lot of themes towards the romance genre, the mobster film genre, film noir and a numerous amount of others and it just gets confusing. The performances are pretty amazing from a very talented case, but you don't get to connect with the characters of the film because of the lack of direction the film has. Visually the film is stunning in a sense, but there are times were the effects feel a little cartoonish. Not all books or stories are meant to be made into films and with the way this film is structured, it might've been better as a miniseries. Overall this is an ambitious film that pays omage to classic films, but it honestly doesn't have a great structure which really hurts the brilliant performances. I give Live by Night a 5 out of 10.

So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Live by Night, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
