4-4-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following a tease from the man himself this weekend, Alcon Entertainment has confirmed that wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista has been cast in an important supporting role in the upcpming Blade Runner 2. He joins Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard alongside Ryan Gosling and Robin Wright in the film. Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) is directing the film, with principal photography scheduled to begin this July. Blade Runner 2 will be released by Warner Bros. in North America on January 12, 2018. Sony Pictures Releasing International will distribute in all overseas territories in all media. Blade Runner 2 (which has still not announced its official title) is set several decades after the 1982 original. The film is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”. Story details have not been revealed. Alcon Entertainment acquired the Blade Runner 2, television and ancillary franchise rights to the franchise in 2011 from the late producer Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic science-fiction thriller. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Johnson and Kosove. Bud Yorkin will receive producer credit. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers. Ridley Scott will also executive produce. Bautista is currently reprising his role as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He can next be seen in the Melissa McCarthy comedy The Boss, in addition to Kickboxer Vengeance with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Gin Carno, and Lionsgate’s action film Marauders. He was last seen in SPECTRE, Riddick, and The Man with the Iron Fists.

I really like this casting. Now I know that Dave Bautista isn't the greatest actor in the world, but if you put him in the right role with very little dialogue, then he can be quite effective. If I had to guess who or what he is going to play, I would have to say he is going to be the main villain/replicant that Ryan Gosling will have to face. I think Bautista's character will be along the lines of what Rutger Hauer's character was. I've said before I'm excited for this film and if you haven't checked out the first film you definitely need to.

It’s been over a year since any news has come out regarding the highly-anticipated The Last of Us movie, and there’s apparently a reason behind that. Speaking with IGN, The Last of Us game director and writer of the film’s script, Neil Druckmann, revealed that the film has entered a place even Joel can’t escape from. “I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do,” he said. “There hasn’t been any work done on it in over a year and a half.” It was previously revealed that Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams was being eyed for the role of Ellie in the film, though with the film stuck in development, the actress may move on toward other projects. The Last of Us follows hardened survivor Joel and Ellie, a young and capable girl, on their journey through a radically transformed world. Set twenty years after an infectious pandemic spread by the cordyceps virus ravaged the course of humanity, these two people, who were brought together by chance, must make life-altering decisions in order to survive. The Last of Us explores themes of survival, loyalty, love, and redemption in an emotionally charged expedition across a post-epidemic United States. Druckmann was set to co-produce the film along with Naughty Dog Co-Presidents’ Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra, Game Director Bruce Straley, and filmmaker Sam Raimi via the Ghost House Pictures banner.

See this is a perfect example of not trusting anything anyone says until the film starts shooting footage. A lot of announcements are made for films because they want everyone to know that they are working on the film. When the film starts gathering footage then the film is actually in the works. I'm a little disappointed that they have taken a year and a half to get footage and cast the film and they have done nothing. It's laziness and it's a shame because this is a property that can work, but if you aren't even going to attempt to make the film, then why even bother. This is what is wrong with Hollywood and how they go about things and it's pathetic. Just scrap the project entirely or get other people to work on it who are willing to instead of being lazy and not doing anything.

Back in 2010, New Line/Warner Bros. announced they were developing a big screen, live-action/animated hybrid version of classic Looney Tunes character Speedy Gonzales, to be voiced by George Lopez. Now, Deadline is reporting that “The Fastest Mouse in all Mexico” is back on the fast track at Warners as a fully-animated feature film tentatively titled Speedy, with Mexican actor/director Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included) taking over the voice originated by Mel Blanc from 1953 to 1989. “In Mexico we grew up watching Speedy Gonzalez,” Eugenio Derbez said. “He was like a superhero to us, or maybe more like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pacho Villa. He watched out for the little people but with a lot of bravado and a weakness for the ladies. I’m really excited to be bringing this character to the big screen. And besides being Mexican— my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzalez and I have big ears. The casting couldn’t be better.” Dylan Sellers of Rivers Edge Films and Derbez and Ben Odell of 3pas Studios will produce, with Hank Nelken (Are We Done Yet?, Saving Silverman) scripting the story that is described as a “heist caper,” with both an English and Spanish-language version in the works. “We see this as an origin story of the great master, like a Robin Hood character, who ultimately ends up taking from the rich and giving to the poor,” said Sellers. “In a time when Donald Trump is gaining momentum, the world needs Speedy more than ever.” For many years, Gonzales was a figure of controversy for Warners, with many politically correct factions considering the character an offensive stereotype, despite his continued popularity in Latin America. Joe Dante even poked fun at Speedy becoming a pariah in a scene for 2004’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action. He has since made appearances in several Looney Tunes shows and video games, as well as commercials for Volkswagen and Virgin Media.

I really like this idea to a point. I like how New Line and Warner Bros. are wanting to make solo films for their Looney Tunes characters, but I don't think this is the one you go with off the bat. Look Speedy Gonzales is a fun character, but he's a side character and I just don't know how the film is going to do. I'm also not a big fan of George Lopez and they could've went with someone else. I'm excited for the various possibilities, but I just don't know if this film is going to work.

A24 has revealed the unpredictable first Swiss Army Man trailer, starring Paul Dano, Daniel Radcliffe and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Check it out below! In the film, Hank (Dano) is stranded on a deserted island, having given up all hope of ever making it home again. But one day everything changes when a corpse named Manny (Radcliffe) washes up on shore; the two become fast friends, and ultimately go on an epic adventure that will bring Hank back to the woman of his dreams. Swiss Army Man creates a world like no other—a place of pure fantastical imagination, brimming with magical realism yet featuring two characters whose dreams and fears are entirely relatable.  Swiss Army Man is the feature film debut of acclaimed music video directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (collectively known as DANIELS, and responsible for the beloved “Turn Down For What” video, among many others). Swiss Army Man opens theatrically on June 17, 2016.

This was a really great trailer. This film has received a lot of attention coming out of the Sundance Film Festival and rightfully so because this is one of the more awkward films to ever be made. It looks like everything I have thought about this film is true and I'm really looking forward to it. It's crazy to think this, but this might be a potential Oscar film and if it is able to get that far then I'll be rooting for the film all the way.

Mel Gibson is back and madder than Mad Max, utilizing a Liam Neeson-worthy set of survival skills in the first Blood Father trailer, which you can check out below! Mel Gibson stars as John Link, an ex-convict who must protect his estranged daughter (Erin Moriarty) from violent drug dealers. The action thriller also stars William H. Macy, Thomas Mann, Elisabeth Rohm, Diego Luna and Michael Parks. Written by Peter Craig (The Town) and directed by French helmer Jean-Francois Richet (Mesrine), Blood Father opens in Australia on August 25, and in other territories through Lionsgate later this year.

This was an awesome trailer. Mel Gibson may be one of the most insane people on the planet and a lot of people don't like him and that's understandable, but you can't deny his acting abilities. He looks absolutely great in this film and the film itself looks intense as can be. I don't know how much publicity the film will get, but I think it has a lot of potential especially with Gibson in front of the camera and I'm excited to check it out.
