4-19-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Willem Dafoe has joined the cast of Warner Bros.‘ upcoming Justice League movie. It’s unclear what character he’ll be playing in the movie, though the outlet notes that he won’t be playing a villain but a “good guy,” which doesn’t necessarily mean another superhero. Dafoe is perhaps most well-known for playing Norman Osborn, aka The Green Goblin, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man series. He also appeared in other fan-favorite films like The Boondock Saints, American Psycho, and John Wick. He’s been previously nominated for two Oscars for his supporting roles in Platoon and Shadow of the Vampire. Batman v Superman‘s Zack Snyder will return to direct the film, making it his third DC project in a row, from a script by Argo‘s Chris Terrio. Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot star as the DC Trinity, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in the film with Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Amber Heard is set to play Queen Mera in the film as well before moving to the solo Aquaman movie in 2018, with J.K. Simmons set to appear as Commissioner Gordon. Justice League is currently filming in London with on location shooting to also take place in Iceland. Justice League will debut in theaters on November 10, 2017.

This is a casting decision. Willem Dafoe is a tremendous actor and adding him to any film is a big-time plus. I like how DC is choosing who they want in their Cinematic Universe and it's encouraging for what they are building towards. I honestly don't have the faintest idea of who he could be playing because the description is vague and pretty confusing. I mean their aren't many characters who aren't villains and are good guys, but not superheros. I'm thinking this is just to throw us off, but I think he could be an aging Green Arrow sorta in the vein of Ben Affleck's aging Batman or Martian Manhunter. I think he is going to round out the Justice League for Part 2 when they might introduce more members.

Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have released a new Warcraft trailer, featuring all-new footage from the upcoming video game adaptation. Titled Warcraft: The Beginning internationally, the film will be released overseas starting on May 25 and in North America on June 10. Warcraft is an epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based on Blizzard Entertainment’s global phenomenon. The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home. So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and written by Charles Leavitt and Jones, the film stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky and Daniel Wu. Warcraft is a Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production. The producers are Charles Roven, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Alex Gartner and Stuart Fenegan. Jillian Share, Brent O’Connor, Michael Morhaime and Paul Sams serve as executive producers. Rob Pardo, Chris Metzen, Nick Carpenter and Rebecca Steel Roven co-produce.

This was a really great trailer. It showed a lot more action and the visual effects look a lot more finished then what they  did in the first trailer. This might be one of most visually appealing films of the year and it looks like this might be the first great video game film adaptation. We didn't get too much story development and that sorta frightens me in the sense that it might be too generic and that could hurt the quality of the film.

New roads are ahead as Vin Diesel today revealed the first Furious 8 poster, which you can view below. Furious 8 is scheduled to hit theaters on April 14, 2017. Straight Outta Compton helmer F. Gary Gray will direct the feature, which is planned to launch the new trilogy of films. Look for Fast and Furious 9 to arrive on April 19, 2019 with Fast and Furious 10 following on April 2, 2021. Vin Diesel will return for Furious 8 with with franchise regulars Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black reprising their roles as street racers-turned-international criminals-turned-super-secret agents. Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson and Kurt Russell are expected to return as well.  Fast and Furious 8, 9 and 10 aren’t the only films new that Universal has planned for the franchise. It was recently revealed that plans are underway for both Fast and Furious spinoffs and prequels.

Furious 8

This is a pretty bland poster. I mean if you look at several of the other posters from the previous films in the franchise it has the same generic look of a car in the background with a character(s) looking wither off in the distance or straight at you. I do the like the tagline because this is the first film since Tokyo Drift without Paul Walker and it's going to be a whole new journey for the core cast. I enjoyed Furious 7 more than I should've, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how the franchise will move forward after pulling off the best film of the franchise yet.

People has revealed our first official look at Elizabeth Banks as villain Rita Repulsa in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot!  “It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa,” Banks tells the outlet, before teasing: “We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.” Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late. The Power Rangers cast includes Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, and Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect, The Hunger Games franchise) as Rita Repulsa. Directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), Power Rangers is written by John Gatins (Kong: Skull Island, Real Steel), Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula Untold), Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor), and Max Landis (Chronicle). Producers are Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars, The Maze Runner franchise). Now shooting in Vancouver, the new Power Rangers hits the big screen March 24, 2017.

I really like the look. Now as a lot of you know I am a fairly big Power Rangers fan (or I was when I was younger) and this looks nothing like what Rita did in the tv show and I'm ok with that. Look this is a new and fresher modern take on the Power Rangers and you need to change some things up so that you're not putting put the same dull product over and over again. She does look a little like a Mortal Kombat character, but I think she also looks menacing enough for her to be a force within the film and possible franchise.

Lionsgate (via director Jon M. Chu) has revealed the new poster for Now You See Me 2, which is set for a June 10 release. You can check out the Now You see Me 2 poster below. Chu recently announced he would return to the director’s chair for Now You See Me 3. The Four Horsemen return for a second mind-bending adventure, elevating the limits of stage illusion to new heights and taking them around the globe. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all. With a screenplay by Ed Solomon and Pete Chiarelli, Now You See Me 2 stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman. Lizzy Caplan is stepping in for Isla Fisher and Jay Chou and Daniel Radcliffe also star.

Now You See Me 2

I like the poster but there is no originality, The stacked cards look really neat, but it's almost identical to the first films poster. The cards and more characters are the only differences between the posters. Honestly this laziness is was makes me angry with Hollywood in the sense that it doesn't take much to make a poster and the fact you recycled the same poster is just flat out embarrassing. I'm looking forward to the film, but if it was based on the poster, then I wouldn't see it.
