4-13-16 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Straight from its premiere on ABC‘s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Doctor Strange trailer has officially arrived! You can watch the trailer in the player below. Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme along with Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive) as The Ancient One and Benedict Wong as Doctor Strange’s humble servant, Wong, and, in undisclosed roles, Rachel McAdams (The Vow), Michael Stuhlbarg (Pawn Sacrifice), Scott Adkins (The Bourne Ultimatum), Amy Landecker (“Transparent”), and Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”). The film is directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil) from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Passengers) and C. Robert Cargill (Sinister). Doctor Strange tells the story of Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch), an acclaimed neurosurgeon who uncovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions after a near-fatal car accident, showing audiences corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe never before explored. Doctor Strange opens in theaters on Friday, November 4, 2016. Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War will open in theaters first on May 6.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this trailer. Look I'm not that big of a Doctor Strange fan and I don't know a lot about him, but this trailer didn't really get me excited and it felt bland and if it didn't have the Marvel logo the I would've thought it was another generic film. It felt like a mix of Inception, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Batman Begins and I just didn't get a really good feel of what was going on. I'm looking forward to the film mainly because of Benedict Cumberbatch and because it's a Marvel film, but I'm just not that excited for it just yet.

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice having earned $785.8 million worldwide so far, Warner Bros. Pictures is looking to extend its relationship with their new Batman, Ben Affleck. Having previously been contracted for the Justice League: Part One and Part Two movies, it was confirmed on Tuesday by Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara at CinemaCon that Affleck will direct and star in a stand-alone Batman movie as well. Last summer, it was revealed that Affleck would co-write the stand-alone Batman movie with comic scribe Geoff Johns with an eye toward directing it, though no further information on the film had been released since. Production on Justice League: Part One has begun in London. Affleck will be joined by his fellow Justice League members Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Amber Heard is set to play Queen Mera in the film as well before moving to the solo Aquaman movie in 2018, with J.K. Simmons set to appear as Commissioner Gordon. The Zack Snyder-directed movie will debut in theaters on November 10, 2017.

This isn't surprising to hear. In the past year we've heard that this was a possibility and it was even thought of by other film pundits when the announcement of Affleck as Batman was made. Ben Affleck was the best part of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and some people are staring to consider him as the best Batman yet, but I think we should see at least one or two more films before that decision can be made. Besides becoming a better actor, Ben Affleck is a phenomenal director and I think he is the perfect choice to to direct the first new Batman solo film. I'm a big Batman fan and I think this could be an amazing film and I cannot wait to see the villains and storyline for the film.

Although Tom Holland, the Marvel cinematic universe’s new Spider-Man, hit the red carpet for today’s Captain America: Civil War premiere earlier tonight, it seems he immediately boarded a plane and flew to Las Vegas to surprise the crowd at CinemaCon 2016. There, as part of the Sony Pictures presentation, Holland helped announce that next summer’s solo Spidey film has a title. As has been rumored for a few days, the July 7, 2017 release will be titled Spider-Man: Homecoming. “It really is a homecoming,” Holland told the crowd, “because, throughout the movie, Peter is trying to find out who he is and where he belongs in this world.” Earlier this week, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased that Spider-Man: Homecoming will feature characters from throughout the MCU. Fans will get to see Holland’s webslinger interacting with their favorite Marvel superheroes a lot sooner than next summer, however, as Spidey is slated to make his debut in Civil War. In fact, a new clip from Civil War ended the Sony Pictures presentation, offering a look at Peter Parker’s first encounter with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. In the clip, Parker comes home to find Tony sitting on the couch with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). Parker is surprised to see the famous billionaire playboy superhero sitting in living room and can only nod as Tony winks at him, clearly aware of his secret identity. Helping hide that secret from May (about whom Tony jokes, “It’s hard to believe she’s anyone’s aunt”), Stark pretends that Peter applied for a special program with Stark Industries and has been selected. Scripted by Vacation writers and directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, Spider-Man: Homecoming is also confirmed to star Zendaya as another lead character named Michelle. It will hit regular theaters and IMAX on July 7, 2017.

I really hate this title. Look I get why the title is what it is because it's a little tongue and cheek to say "Hey, Spider-Man is in the MCU now and it's his homecoming party", but it's just so cheesy and corny. Also it kinda fits well with the type of story they were going for which was down the line of something like a John Hughes film and the title fits that type of film pretty well. I wish the title was different, but it's probably not going to change, but I'm still excited to see this film because it's time for Spider-Man to get a fresh start and a clean slate with the MCU involved.

Move over, Tom Hanks, it looks like Steven Spielberg has found a new muse. Just two days ago, it was announced that Spielberg and his Bridge of Spies Oscar winner/The BFG headliner Mark Rylance would reunite for inquisition drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, and now Heat Vision reports that Rylance will also join the cast of the director’s upcoming Ready Player One movie. Rylance will play James Donovan Halliday, the Howard Hughes-esque reclusive creator of OASIS, a role originally rumored to have been earmarked for Gene Wilder. The Ready Player One movie cast already includes Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cook, Ben Mendelsohn and Simon Pegg. Set in the near future, Ready Player One follows outcast teenager Wade Watts (Sheridan), who escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging in to the OASIS, a globally networked virtual utopia where users can lead idyllic alternate lives. When eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first. A Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures production, the Ready Player One movie is being directed by Spielberg, who is also producing alongside Donald De Line, under his De Line Pictures banner, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger. Bruce Berman will serve as executive producer. Look for the Ready Player One movie to hit theaters on March 30, 2018.

I really love this casting. It's amazing what can happen after working with Stephen Spielberg for the first time and just happen to win an Oscar and it gets you three more films work with the same director. I mean I always talk about how an Oscar can send your career in a huge upward direction as long as you pick the right roles and this is a great role for Rylance. It's crazy to think he is going to join an elite company with Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford as the only 3 actors to appear in 4 different Spielberg films. While I would've love to have seen Gene Wilder in the rile, I think Rylance is the safer choice in the long run.

Sony Pictures has released the new trailer for The Angry Birds Movie, coming to theaters on May 20, 2016. You can watch The Angry Birds Movie trailer below. In the movie, the main trio of Angry Birds will be led by Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers) as Red, a bird with a temper, with Josh Gad (Frozen) as the speedy Chuck, and Danny McBride (This is the End, “Eastbound & Down”) voicing the volatile Bomb. Supporting them are Bill Hader (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) as a pig, Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids) as Matilda, and Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) as the Mighty Eagle. Also lending their voices to the video game adaptation are Keegan-Michael Key (“Key & Peele”), Kate McKinnon (“SNL”), Tony Hale (“Arrested Development”), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Hannibal Buress (“Broad City”), Cristela Alonzo (“Cristela”), Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street), Danielle Brooks (“Orange is the New Black”), singer Romeo Santos and YouTube stars Smosh (Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla). The film was written by “The Simpsons” alum Jon Vitti and directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis. “The question Rovio gets more than anything is ‘Why are these birds so angry?'” producer John Cohen (Despicable Me) said previously. “This is the origin story for how that conflict came to exist between birds and little green piggies.” In its various formats, the Angry Birds game has been downloaded over two billion times as of this year, with an animated series “Angry Birds Toons” that has collectively tallied three-billion views on numerous platforms.

This was a really great trailer. Look I'm a kid at heart and animated films always pull at my inner child and I just can't help but try to enjoy them and this film looks like something I can enjoy. It was absolutely hilarious  and I love how they incorporated the sling shot into the film as that is a big part of the game and they even show some of the birds powers. I love the voice cast for this film and I think it could surprise a lot of people and I cannot wait to see if will be everything I'm hyping it up to be.
