So I recently watched The Florida Project and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...
The Florida Project follows six-year-old Moonee (played by Brooklynn Prince) and her rebellious mother Halley (played by Bria Vinai,) over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget hotel managed by Bobby (played by Willem Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion. Despite her harsh surroundings, the precocious and ebullient Moonee has no trouble making each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure as she and her ragtag playmate Jancey (played by Valeria Cotto) , a new arrival to the area who quickly becomes Moon’s best friend. Unbeknownst to Moonee, however, her delicate fantasy is supported by the toil and sacrifice of Halley, who is forced to explore increasingly dangerous possibilities in order to provide for her daughter.
This is a truly wonderful and heart-breaking film. This film portrays a subject that a lot of us overlook in our country and the subject being homelessness and we tend not to focus on it because we might think some issues are much bigger than it, but in reality it's just as important as a lot of topics in our society. The film does a great job of intertwining a lot of different stories and making it just a truly gut-wrenching film. At first there are some characters you see and you ask yourself "how can the film be heart-breaking if I don't like the characters", but as you go through the film you see why they act the way they do and after realizing the horrible conditions, you do begin to get that emotional connection with them. There a lot of great performances in the film and two in particular stand out and those come from newcomer Brooklyn Prince who is truly charming in her role and she just gives off a lot of charisma that fills your heart with joy. The other performance comes from Willem Dafoe who gives the performance of a lifetime and he is right my a massive frontrunner for a lot of people (including myself) for Best Supporting Actor and giving him the honor would be well deserved. As mentioned before, the story does a great job of tackling and underrated issue, but a lot of credit goes to director Sean Baker who is just able to capture these people and how they live their day to day lives so kudos to him. The big problem with the film is that there are a lot of emotional moments in the film and some of them just feel overdone and are often placed in an awkward scene that makes it feel forced without any context. Overall this is a truly remarkable film that gives a lot of insight to a topic no one wants to talk about and it has some of the years best performances to help take the film to new heights. I give The Florida Project a 9 out of 10.
