So I recently watched Breathe and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado..........
After contracting polio at the age of 28, Robin Cavendish (played by Andrew Garfield) is confined to a bed and given only months to live. With help from his family and inventor Teddy Hall (played by Hugh Bonneville), Cavendish devotes the rest of his life to help fellow patients and the disabled.
This is a really beautiful film to watch. It's the time of year when bio-pics are coming out left and right and add this film to that list. Some bio-pics tend to take a lot of different approaches and to each their own, but this one takes a much different approach than previous bio-pics. You usually get a mix of the good and the bad in someone's life to show that their is two sides to every coin, but in this film it takes a heart-warming path and you don't get to see much of a dark side from this man. It's a bold move on director Andy Serkis's part especially for this being his directorial debut, but it would've been nice to see the darker side of a character and not just make this out to be a happy story when in reality it's not. Andrew Garfield continues his streak of absolutely great performances and this one is no different and he should seriously be looked at for being nominated again this year for Best Actor at the Oscars. The supporting cast does a great job as well, but they aren't shown enough in the film which takes away emotional complexities the main character might feel. As mentioned before the film doesn't take too many dark turns story wise, but it does become very predictable even if you had never heard of the story before. Overall Serkis makes a lot of strange decisions, but it's to be expected from a first time director, but he does help Andrew Garfield act his way into a potential Oscar nomination and he is able to stand out because the rest of the cast is fairly weak. I give Breathe a 5 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Breathe, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
