My Review of War for the Planet of the Apes

So I recently watched War for the Planet of the Apes and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Caesar, with a shotgun and Nova behind his back, Maurice, and Luca on horses face a human army and turncoat apes with the film's logo and "Witness the End July 14" at the bottom.

Caesar (played by Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless colonel (played by Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both of their species and the future of the planet.

This movie is absolutely fantastic on massively epic scale. There are a lot of great trilogies floating around such as The Dark Knight Trilogy, Toy Story, Original Star Wars Trilogy, Godfather Trilogy, The Lord of the Rings and many more and after seeing this film, it caps off one of the greatest trilogies of all-time and deserves to mentioned alongside the ones stated earlier. One of the main reasons why is because of the character of Caesar and you get to see how much his character has grown in these three films. One of the reasons for the character growth is because of Andy Serkis and what he is able to bring to the table whilst doing motion capture and this performance is one that will stand the test of time. A lot of people have been in bandwagon to see Serkis get nominated for an Oscar for his motion capture work and no matter what you opinion is on the matter, when you watch these films tell me that you can't see the raw powerful emotion coming from Andy Serkis and how much of what the character is doing is because of him. One of the things that doesn't get mentioned a lot on this blog is musical scores and what Michael Giacchino was able to come up with for this film really puts this soundtrack among one of the greatest soundtracks of all-time.

One things that has gotten constant praise throughout the trilogy are the visual effects of the apes and you can easily tell how much they've been developed over the years and how each film has gotten progressively better when it comes to visual effects and the apes look so realistic that at times it's hard to tell whether or not they are real apes of just actors in motion capture suits. The story itself is a great conclusion to the overall arch of the franchise and it does bring closure to several loose ends within the franchise. It also does a great job of world-building by giving us little tidbits that lead into the original 1968 film that started everything and it does give a great explanation into the backstory of that film. You wouldn't often see a film like Transformers be mentioned within a review for this, but that franchise could watch this movie and take notes on when you have a group of characters in the title, you focus on them and the secondary group that have nothing to do with the title. Other than the last little bit of the second act and the entire third act, we don't get to see humans much in the film and it really centers around the apes as it should when it has apes in the title. Comedy in a film like this is hard to pull off because the material and story are so dark, that even a little comedy feels out of place and in this film Matt Reeves is able to blend the comedic moments into the film so well that they better serve the story and one of the main driving forces of the comedy is Steve Zahn as Bad Ape and the physical humor he brings to the film is perfect and just by looking at him, it makes you want to laugh. While the film is spectacular there is one minor thing that is very misleading and that is the title and that's mainly due to the fact that the film has more exposition than it does war which is only truly prominent in the last 30 minutes of a 2 1/2 hour film. Overall this film is one of the best of the year and it deserves everything that comes its way in the future and it caps off one of the greatest cinematic trilogies of all-time. I give War for the Planet of the Apes a 9.5/10.
