My Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

So I recently watched Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp) feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar (played by Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle. Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer (played by Kaya Scodelario) and a headstrong young man (played by Brenton Thwaites) in the British navy.

While not the best thing in the world, it is the best Pirates film since the first one. The fact that this franchise is in its 5th film is absolutely insane simply because who would've thought a harmless Disney ride would turn into a multi-million dollar franchise. The first was just a great and unexpected masterpiece and since then, the franchise has gone down hill, but this one surprisingly brings it back up a little. Bringing in someone like Javier Bardem in as the villain is a perfect choice and he plays the character of Captain Salazar so well and creepily that he is the key bad guy the franchise was missing the past few films. (sorry Geoffory Rush, Bill Nighy and Ian McShane). As for the rest of the cast, it's more or less just the same performances and character types we've seen in the previous films and it's nothing to get really excited about. The story itself is ok, but it just doesn't grab you like it should and it follows the same basic beats as the previous entries. One really huge positive for the film is the length as it comes in at a perfect 129 minutes and strays away from being a 3 hour film like other films in the franchise and it doesn't drag at all eventhough it follows the same story patterns. Now as for Johnny Depp himself, he gets to be himself and he is actually Jack Sparrow in a film with the character Jack Sparrow and the crazy characteristics that Johnny Depp has put into every one of his most recent films, works in this film to perfection. One thing that is very noticeable is that the film doesn't take itself too seriously as it shouldn't because it's based off of a theme park ride and you can tell they made it a little more kid friendly. The ending feels really shoehorned,  melodramatic and even unnecessary, but since this is the supposed last film, the producers had to tie up a few loose ends. Overall it's not the greatest film in the world, but there are some moments you can have fun with even if it feels like the same film you've seen before and it is a fitting end to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. I give Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales a 6 out of 10.
