My Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

So I recently watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...

Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) and his fellow Guardians are hired by a powerful alien race, the Sovereign, to protect their precious batteries from invaders. When it is discovered that Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) has stolen the items they were sent to guard, the Sovereign dispatch their armada to search for vengeance. As the Guardians try to escape, the mystery of Peter's parentage is revealed.

Before the review gets started, this review is going to have quite a few spoilers in it so before you go any further you have been warned. With that out of the way let's get started...

This film has a lot of really great moments, but it ends up being good not great. As with all Marvel sequels (besides Captain America: Winter Soldier), the sequels have failed to live up to the original (Iron Man 2 , Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron), this film falls into that category. What made the first film so successful is that nobody expected it to be as good as it was and it came out and introduced us to brilliant characters for the first time and frankly the hype of this film got the best of it. There are a lot of really hilarious moments in the film, but some of them felt forced and it felt as if the filmmakers really wanted to hammer home how cute and funny Baby Groot is because most of the jokes fall on him and they can be hit and miss. Outside of those jokes there aren't many that will be memorable when you leave the theaters. Visually it's easily one of the top best looking films behind Doctor Strange and its predecessor Guardians of the Galaxy. Another thing that isn't memorable at all is the music which is really disappointing when you compare it to the first films soundtrack which had a lot of catchy tunes that are still being sung today and you can name them, in this one you should remember one and only because the song is mentioned within the film. One of the more frequent complaints with the MCU is that all of their villains (outside of Loki) have been either ok or downright awful and both The Sovereign and Ego are just useless. One pops up out of nowhere all the time like an annoying pimple that won't go away and Ego's entire method is a little ridiculous. Besides the comedy, most of the emotional moments are forced and not just between Ego and Peter Quill, but also with Gamora and Nebula. The one bright spot character wise comes in the form of Michael Rooker as Yondu and the development of his character comes full circle and you appreciate him even more when you go back and rewatch the first film. Finally the one major thing the film lacks is a very coherent and sensible plot and for the first 1 hour and 45 minutes, you are kept wondering the entire time of what the ultimate payoff is going to be and the last 30 minutes feel bland and you're left unimpressed by the end of the film. Overall it's a film that has it's share of moments that are fine and dandy, but the film as whole feels as if the filmmakers bit off more than they could chew. I give Guardians of the Galaxy a 6.5 out of 10.
