So I recently watched Inherent Vice and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...
When private eye Doc Sportello (played by Joaquin Phoenix)'s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a looney bin...well, easy for her to say. It's the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment, like "trip" or "groovy," that's being way too overused - except this one usually leads to trouble.
This was a really solid film. The cast in the film is solid and is full of Academy Award winners and nominees that when they are onscreen togehter work well and feed off of each other very well. It also has a lot of great subtle comedy and at times works very well and it depends on who is deliver the punch lines. Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the best directors working today and his films are just top notch, but I think this is probably his worst, but it is still very solid. The comedy as I said before works well and it has a lot of great jokes, but when certain people try to attempt the jokes it just doesn't work at all and it feels forced. It also has a runtime of 148 minutes which to me just feels and sounds too long. Plus this film isn't made to be a complete comedy and it's supposed to have a lot of drama, but that feels like the drama was put on the back-burner. Overall the film has an amazing cast that work well togehter, but the runtime and the shifts in tones really bring the film down from the greatness it could of had. I give Inherent Vice a 8.5 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen what did you think of Inherent Vice, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
