12-15-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

Following the departure of Roberto Orci from the director’s chair of Star Trek 3 (or 13 depending on your point of view), the hunt for a new director has already begun and now Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams have narrowed it down to a list of five names. On the list are directors Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Justin Lin (Fast & Furious), and Duncan Jones (Moon, Warcraft). Although a release date has not been specified, it is widely believed that the plan is for the film to hit theaters in 2016, as the year marks the 50th anniversary of the “Star Trek” franchise. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana and John Cho are all expected to reprise their roles as the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Plot details have not yet been revealed, although Orci stated earlier this year that his plan was to set the action in deep space, unlike the relatively Earth-centric J.J. Abrams films. There is no word currently on whether the film will move forward with the same screenplay scripted by Orci, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne or seek a new draft.

This is an impressive list. Now it has come out from Duncan Jones himself that he will not be directing Star Trek 3 simply because he wants to work on a original project next and I completely understand where he is coming from. As for the rest of the list I would personally love to see Rupert Wyatt at the helm. He's done sci-fi before with Rise of the Planet of the Apes and I think this would be perfect. Honestly I would choose any one of these four so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

On Friday, we learned that Legendary Pictures had shifted the release date for their upcoming film Kong: Skull Island from November of 2016 to spring 2017, and now Deadline brings word that actor J.K. Simmons has signed on to appear in the film. A fan-favorite to genre fans for his role as J. Jonah Jameson in the “Spider-Man” films, Simmons can currently be seen in the film Whiplash and will appear in Terminator Genisys next summer. Simmons joins a cast that thus far only includes another comic book movies veteran, Tom Hiddleston. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by John Gatins (Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla), Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce and Alex Garcia will executive produce. The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures on March 10, 2017.

This is amazing casting. J.K. Simmons is a very talented and underrated actor and his performance in Whiplash this year will likely win him an Academy Award. I think putting him in this film is a fantastic idea and I cannot wait to see what kind of chemistry he and Tom Hiddelston will have onscreen together.

Nearly 27 years since Tim Burton and Michael Keaton first teamed together for the comedy Beetlejuice, the movie is as popular as ever as new people discover the quirky mix of light comedy and family-friendly horror. On top of that, Michael Keaton has been having a bit of a resurgence in the past year, starring in RoboCop, Need for Speed and giving what many think is an Oscar-worthy performance in Alejandro Inarritu’s Birdman. It seemed like now would be a great time for Keaton and Burton to reunite for a sequel to the movie which they’ve discussed a lot in recent years. When ComingSoon.net spoke with director Tim Burton for his upcoming flick Big Eyes earlier today, we asked if he had seen Birdman yet (he hasn’t) as well as trying to get some sort of update on the long-discussed sequel to Beetlejuice. Burton essentially told us: “It’s a character that I love and I miss and I miss actually working with Michael. There’s only one Betelgeuse.  We’re working on a script and I think it’s probably closer than ever and I’d love to work with him again.”

I love Burton's comments. I honestly think that with Birdman being as successful as it is and the same could be said for Big Eyes a Beetlejuice 2 is looking more and more likely to happen. Both will be on hot-streaks with their recent films and this film deserves a sequel. Look the fact of the matter is that not a lot of the current moviegoing population has seen Beetlejuice and I think this will be a great opportunity for the film to get a little more recognition to help build towards the sequel. I absolutely loved the first Beetlejuice and I'm really looking forward to a sequel.

Following today’s announcement that Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups will have its World Premiere in the Competition Programme at the 65th Berlin Film Festival, FilmNation Entertainment has debuted the trailer which you can watch below. The film stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Terese Palmer, Imogen Poots, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and the voice of Ben Kingsley. Knight of Cups is described as follows: Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep. Rick’s (Christian Bale) father used to read this story to him as a boy. The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth?

This was a pretty decent trailer. It does a good job by having some amazing cinematography and really nice music to play over it. Plus it doesn't give anything away about what the film's premise is and the type of tone it will have. I'm a huge of Terrance Malick this could be his best film since The Thin Red Line. I also love the cast and the premise sounds interesting enough for me to give it a chance when it hits theaters.

Tom Hanks is already starring in the upcoming A Hologram for the King, an adaptation of the Dave Eggers novel that reteams the Two-time Academy Award winner with Cloud Atlas co-helmer Tom Tykwer. Now, Deadline reveals that Hanks is planning another big screen take on Eggers with The Circle. The Spectacular Now director James Ponsoldt is writing and directing the big screen take on the 2013 novel, officially described as follows: When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge. Hanks is attached to both star in and produce The Circle alongside Gary Goetzman through their Playtone banner. The project is said to be actively being shopped around Hollywood this week, so check back for additional details on the project in the very near future.

This film sounds absolutely amazing. It really sounds like it is going to tackle a lot of problems that are occurring in the world today when it comes to operating devices and personal information. I'm interested to see who joins the cast along with Tom Hanks so I can get somewhat of a better idea on what direction the film is going in.
