12-16-14 Movie News

Hello ladies and gentlemen, here is some movie news with some of my thoughts and opinions (which will be in BOLD print). So without further ado...

(NOTE: All of these stories come from comingsoon.net)

20th Century Fox and Bryan Singer got the band back together for this year’s colossal hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, and before it even debuted in theaters, plans were already being put in motion for a follow-up, X-Men: Apocalypse. We know that the 2016 film will see the return of the “First Class” cast members along with younger versions of other characters, but one very important mutant whose involvement hasn’t been mentioned is Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. “I have been speaking to the guys, and I’m not at liberty to tell exactly what’s going on,” Jackman said on the Happy Say Confused Podcast (via MTV), “Which is largely framing my answer here….But there’s still a lot unknown about that, actually. There are some very exciting things about integrating the whole X-Men world, including the Wolverine movie. There’s some really cool things going on.” Even if Jackman doesn’t appear as the character in “Apocalypse,” a third Wolverine film is also in the pipeline with a scheduled release date of March 3, 2017, which Jackman confirmed he and David James Kelly are “working on… really hard.” “I’m very, very excited about that, actually,” Jackman teased for the film, which will see James Mangold return to the director’s chair. Cameras will start rolling on the Bryan Singer directed X-Men: Apocalypse in Montreal beginning April, 2015 for a May 27, 2016 release.

I really like these comments. Out of the entire X-Men continuity issues the franchise has had the one constant has been Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Listen Wolverine is going to be involved in X-Men: Apocalypse for 3 reasons, 1. he's a fan favorite, 2. the way that X-Men: Days of Future Past ended with his character leaves it open for him to return and 3. Jackman has said he has at least two more films in him and X-Men: Apocalypse and The Wolverine 3 are his next films. I'm excited for this film and I can't wait to see Jackman back on the big screen as Wolverine.

The project first announced back in 2013, preproduction is moving forward on Creed, a feature film spinoff of the Rocky franchise. Today, Deadline reveals that the film has set Tessa Thompson (Dear White People, When a Stranger Calls) to star opposite Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan. Creed follows Jordan as the grandson of Apollo Creed. Stallone is planning to reprise his Rocky Balboa role, acting as the younger Creed’s reluctant trainer. The elder Creed, played by Carl Weathers, appeared in the first four Rocky films until a fight with Ivan Drago in Rocky IV led to his death in the ring. Thompson, who will play Creed‘s female lead, can next be seen as part of the ensemble cast of Ava DuVernay’s powerful Martin Luther King Jr. biopic Selma. Fruitvale Station writer/director Ryan Coogler is drafting Creed alongside Aaron Covington. Stallone will also produce, alongside Robert Chartoff, Kevin King and Irwin Winkler.

This is a great casting decision. I've only seen a couple of her films, but she seems like the perfect fit for the film. She's going to be the new Adrian and I really like that this film is doing that. The cast for the film looks amazing and it'll be great to see Rocky Balboa back on the big screen training with Apollo's grandson and I cannot wait to see this film.

On the heels of yesterday’s casting story for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, another interesting tidbit about the high seas franchise has emerged as series star Orlando Bloom (who has previously revealed there are talks he could return) has offered up that the next entry could serve as a reboot. “I’m not entirely sure that [I'll be back] just yet, but there are talks,” he tells IGN. “Basically they want to reboot the whole franchise, I think, and do something with me and the relationship with my son… I’m of course Davey Jones now, so I’m down the bottom of the ocean. It might be kind of fun to do something where I’m rumbling round the bottom of the ocean, because I won’t look anything like me. [Gestures to face] Get all gnarly.” Should he return, Bloom will join newcomer Brenton Thwaites along with Johnny Depp, reprising his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow, Geoffrey Rush, returning as Captain Barbossa, and Javier Bardem, debuting as the film’s villain, Captain Brand. Although full plot details are not yet available, the film is said to see Brand as a ghost hellbent on getting revenge against Sparrow, blaming the rake for the death of his brother. The most recent chapter in the highly successful franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was released in the summer of 2011 and grossed more than one billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set for a Queensland, Australia production. Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will direct with Jerry Bruckheimer back to produce. Look for it to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this. The franchise has really sunk down (no pun intended) in terms of quality and I don't know if a reboot will do the job. I mean the cast sounds interesting so far and the plot does as well, but I'm just not that excited for this film. Hopefully this film can bring the franchise quality back up to par with the first film.

As far as Batman v Superman is concerned, we’ve heard a lot about the former and not so much about the latter, but Badass Digest has a rundown of what Supes is up to based on a script draft by Chris Terrio written just prior to shooting. Needless to say, spoilers below. For those afraid the Dark Knight would overshadow his rival, the site says the new film is very much a sequel to Man of Steel, starting with Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) in Metropolis during the battle with Zod, then picking up two years later. By now Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) and Lois Lane (Amy Adams) have shacked up together, and Clark is frustrated by assignments like a Gotham v Metropolis football game (metaphor, anyone?) when he’s more interested in investigating this crazy Batman character, who is cautiously building anti-Superman weapons.

As for Superman himself, he’s become something of a figure of controversy, criticized for intervening on America’s behalf in the Middle East and being banned from Chinese airspace. He also apparently tells a main villain “I won’t snap your neck, I’m going to take you to prison,” and when fighting the monster Doomsday, General Swanwick (Harry Lennix) informs people that Superman will take the battle away from populated areas. Both of these beats seem to be in direct response to fan outcry from the finale of Man of Steel. In the last movie, Superman was responsible for a lot more carnage than we’re used to seeing from him, so if this is the direction they’re going with the character (i.e. less hurt-y) then that’s a welcome change. There’s been an intense amount of disinformation going around on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, including a very fake script that was reported on as real for some time, so it’s best to take these new revelations with a grain of salt. However, we already have photos from both the Metropolis opening and the football game, so there’s some credibility to this report. Starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Jena Malone, Holly Hunter and Scoot McNairy, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.

I really do like this report. Now remember this is all rumor and this probably won't be confirmed until a full trailer comes out or until the film itself comes out. The report makes a lot of sense for a way for Clark Kent/Superman to go down becuase it puts him in some unfamiliar places and the character will get a chance to develop a little more. I really enjoyed Man of Steel and I am so excited for this film to come out.

Sony Pictures has today revealed five new character posters for ’80s arcade comedy actioner Pixels, featuring the likes of Pac-Man, Centipede, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong and Galaga and you can check out all five posters below! The film, which stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage and Brian Cox hits the big screen on July 24, 2015. In Pixels, intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them and attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Dinklage and Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team’s unique weapons specialist. The action-comedy is directed by Chris Columbus from a story by Tim Herlihy and a screenplay by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, based on the original short film of the same name by Patrick Jean. The film is produced by Adam Sandler, Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, and Allen Covert. Executive Producers are Barry Bernardi, Michael Barnathan, Jack Giarraputo, Heather Parry, Tim Herlihy, Steve Koren, Patrick Jean, Benjamin Darras, Johnny Alves, Matias Boucard, Seth Gordon, and Ben Waisbren.

These are some pretty cool posters. I'm a huge gaming fan and this film really interests me a lot. Now there is one thing I'm not to comfortable about and that's Adam Sandler. His previous films haven't been that great and it makes me nervous when I see his name. Now it's not directed by one of his friends and I think that Chris Columbus can really help this be a solid film
