So I recently watched Last Flag Flying and I'm here to bring you my review. So without further ado...
Thirty years after serving together in the Vietnam War, Larry "Doc" Shepherd (played by Steve Carell), Sal Nealon (played by Bryan Cranston) and the Rev. Richard Mueller (played by Laurence Fishburne) reunite for a different type of mission: to bury Doc's son, a young Marine killed in Iraq. Forgoing burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Doc and his old buddies take the casket on a bittersweet trip up the coast to New Hampshire. Along the way, the three men find themselves reminiscing and coming to terms with the shared memories of a war that continues to shape their lives.
This might be one of the most powerful and emotional films of the year. Anything dealing with veterans should pull at everyone's heartstrings, but it gets even emotional when you see them dealing with the death of their own children which is something that hasn't really been explored and that just brings a whole new experience to the big screen. Richard Linklater does such a great job of capturing each emotion in a way were no matter the emotion that is emoted, you feel the for each character. The performances are just absolutely fantastic and each one given from Carell, Cranston and Fishburne each show just how good each actor is and if the Academy had room for all three of them in the Best Supporting Actor category, then they should all be nominated together. Again going back to Linklater, he does a great job of mixing in the comedy with the really emotional moments to help you as the viewer not look at the film and see how sad it truly is. In some of the emotional moments however, they do feel a bit over-dramatic and can sometimes lead too emotional scenes that are just too much for the viewer to handle. Overall this film has one of the more unique plots seen in a film this year to go along with some of the best directing and performances of the year as well and blending in comedy with sad moments, but at times it takes things a little farther than it should've. I give Last Flag Flying an 8 out of 10.
So ladies and gentlemen, what did you think of Last Flag Flying, what would you rate it and what did you think of my review? Let me know in the comments section below and let your voice be heard.
